Fishy Voting in the "Rate Jim Les II poll...

B4L....I can accept the fact that entire threads and posts will be deleted...they have that right to do that no matter how strict it is..and we can complain (which I don't complain about deletions) but in the end it is their choice. However, there are other things that go beyond what you posted on the rules..you cannot as a moderator go onto other people's profiles that never post here and vote for them by changing their passwords (they have that power to change passwords). That is entirely different.

As a matter of fact their frequent deletions is the thing that bugs me least.

Edit: Also, they have NO right whatsoever to alter posts. Like I said..they can delete till the cows come home...they have no right to ALTER posts.

It wasn't me.....but i could tell it would not be that hard to do...for me it might take a bit longer than a genius....but if i did it i would have voted D. As that is what i voted legitimately.

Am what I getting is that the mods can't figure out what that Vbulletin message is about? I have never run a message board but that update looks trivial...

Are we certain that happened? If so, it is very wrong. If not, there should be some apologies towards the accused.
 
could a possibility be that someone just made 15 accounts back to back to back and voted...? i suppose this could happen if the ip of their computer was disguised :eek:

Unless that person created 12 of the 15 accounts back in 2006, stopped posting anything on them early in 2007, then waited patiently until this poll was posted to vote, along with a moderator and two others, all vote in a matter of minutes, then no; it is not a possibility...

Can we revisit this please? If JMM28 would know how to get to the bottom of this, then I say let's do it. If it was some random hacker, then it will be pretty apparent and the situation can be handled that way. DC, can you get in touch with JMM28?

I have already consulted with an expert, and our site has been hacked. Similar attacks have been reported on vBulletin sites all over the world. This is supposedly a classic type of attack used by pranksters. They cloak their IP address so it is virtually impossible to trace where they came from. It could have come from Peoria, or China. The hacker can select any logon, apparently this attack chose older signons that haven't been active for a while so they could get their job done without being noticed initially, and posted in the poll. I don't know if the poll option somehow played a part in why they chose that. Their motive is unknown, but they apparently get enjoyment in just causing havoc. We will fix the problem and hope it won't happen again.
 
I still would really want to get to the bottom of this, and as moderators, if this is an outside job, I hope you would as well:

If they didn't hack into a moderator's account, that means they had to individually hack in to dozens of old accounts. If they get in as a mod, they can easily reset passwords on multiple accounts. That seems more likely than somebody being able to hack into dozens of accounts by brute force that quickly (a minute or two apart).

Either someone hacked into a moderator's account (then apparently reset the password), which if this is the case I would be all over if I were you.


...or

Somebody hacked into at least twelve separate old and unused accounts, and voted the same vote in a matter of just a couple minutes, to sabotage a poll on a basketball message board of a mid-major basketball team.

...or

A moderator accessed these old accounts and voted hoping no one would notice the discrepancy.

Which scenario seems most plausible?

If it's the first or third scenarios, then there are MAJOR problems with this board that you all need to look into.

If it's the second scenario, then someone has waaaaaay too much free time if they want to mess with little Bradley basketball.

Two words: Occom's Razor.

website for a city's newspaper > basketball message borad

bigger site = greater notoriety for hacking.

Still don't think there is much glory to be had from hacking this site, from a hacker's point of view.
 
After looking quickly at the vb software, the timing of the voting spree (both times all were both within a minute, if not the same minute of another), and general statistic probability, I'd have to say that this wasn't a "hacker". The most likely 2 scenarios...

1. Someone who has the administrator privilege changed the passwords and then deleted the IP information from the database or altered their PC settings, pc settings would be a bit tougher.

2. A fluke situation...something like administrator was left logged onto a public pc, a someone has the keys to the kingdom unbeknownst to the administrator, etc.

The odds of a "hack job" that only affected a meaningless poll...somewhere between getting hit by lightning and winning the mega millions? A hacker would have been more interested in email/password information from recent posters.

That was a site targeted by some loon who knew nothing about the content of the message board - he just crashed the entire darn thing just for the sake of it.

Whoever did this just decided to rig a poll or two.

It doesn't make sense for a random person to rig a poll for the laughs. Whoever did this intended to rig that specific poll, let's not pretend otherwise. If they wanted to cause problems, they would've crashed the site, not rigged a single poll. So whoever it is has some BU-related agenda, whether good or bad.

And he's still a hacker, folks. By definition, you hack into accounts, you're a hacker.

And the people who run this site would never try to rig a poll twice. It makes no sense. I'm sure That Guy will think otherwise. Pyromaniacs like to watch the fires they set.
 
I didn't set any fires, just saw what was going on and thought it clearly needed to be addressed. I have no opinion on what happened in the first poll, as I did not see it.

If someone got into a moderator's account, it obviously needs to be addressed.

If the moderators are rigging polls and altering posts of others, they should be shown the door.

That's what I'm saying has been allegged...not that it did happen. But it's things like those that I'm talking about. You are accusing me of moaning about deletions when in fact I am not at all. They can delete w/e they like. It's things like that (which may not be true) and other things which have happened that cross lines...read my posts...i've been pretty consistent with my thoughts.
 
Based on the sheer amount of time between the voters that never post here there wasn't enough time to individually hack into each account. The person had to of hacked into a moderator account and changed the password (which they can't see). This being the case, and hopefully safely assuming a moderator comes on frequently, has there been any moderators that have noticed that their passwords have been changed?
 
yeah vbulletin versions have been exploited so much in the past....i would assume it is a bit harder with 3.8.x versions....but it was very easy in 3.7.x and older versions so i guess they still can't get it right.
 
thinking that there was no hacker persay...but that a person has that many IDs on this board.....used all IDs to vote.....just a guess of coarse... :)
