as I look back at all the names that were among the candidates considered in 2002 & then in 2011...

Of course Jim Les, Geno Ford - but also all the others who were hyped or considered - or who passed on us or who we passed on (Jones, McClain, Giacoletti, Jeter, DeChellis, Lusk, Hinson, Montgomery, Rodney Terry, Sydney Johnson.......and others)

really - now looking back - almost none of them have excelled where they were or now are...
(except one who just won a league title and who has a Sweet Sixteen under his belt.)
Ya gotta wonder how was it we considered so many that never succeeded anywhere?

Buffalo did not waste any time replacing Bobby Hurley. They named Nate Oats head coach.
Now there are only 7 D1 job openings left- Alcorn State, Bowling Green State, Bucknell, UT-Chattanooga, Kennesaw State, SEMO and VMI.

Isn't UW Green Bay still open?

Buffalo job now reportedly filled

SEMO has announced they will name a new coach today. But they are doing it a unique way. They have their 3 finalists on campus and will pick one publicly-
ESPN's Jeff Goodman says:
https://twitter.com/GoodmanESPN/status/587688127407480833
Final three for Southeast Missouri State, per sources: Dwayne Stephens (Mich St.), Rick Ray (formerly of Miss St) and Isaac Chew (Va Tech).

https://twitter.com/GoodmanESPN/status/587703804981878784

Southeast Missouri State with novel approach. All 3 finalists on campus. "It's like the Bachelor," said one. "Someone is getting the rose
."

I saw where Dwayne Stephens (the Michigan State assistant), and Isaac Chew, two of the 3 finalists, must not have wanted anything to do with this bizarre, circus-like final selection event today for the SEMO job. They pulled their names out of consideration and left town before the final decision. So Rick Ray gets the job.

Now Dane Fife is mentioned in the mix for Bowling Green, where Chris Jans was fired...
This is about the 20th spot Fife's name's been thrown out - will he get hired?

Here's an update on hirings...only four open jobs remain - must be a mad race to land Dane Fife!!

SIU has narrowed their Athletic Director search to four candidates...

Rick Hartzell - the past AD at UNI and a frequent referee at our games - LINK
Tommy Bell - current WIU Athletic Director
Rick Darnell - senior Assoc. AD at Illinois
Leon Costello - deputy AD at South Dakota State

we often see schools requiring "HEAD COACHING EXPERIENCE" as a prerequisite to hire at this level....

In fact Bradley listed it as a requirement for both the mens & womens positions ...

but Michael Huger has never spent a day in his life as a head coach at any level....Maybe people have learned that it isn't necessarily a guarantee of better success.

only three open spots remain - Alcorn State, Bucknell, and Kennesaw State..
all three say they are close to hiring but none are pursuing Dane Fife so I guess he will stay as assistant at Michigan State.

two of the three open spots (Alcorn & Kennesaw) are perennial bottom dwellers, ranking regularly in the RPI 300's and doing lots of guarantee games for the money...
They are tough spots to expect to win at, but the 3rd program (Bucknell) did succeed by hiring a successful DIII coach, and over the past 7 years they had 4 league titles & 2 NCAA appearances!

One of the only three remaining open DI head coaching spots just got filled...
Bucknell hired Nathan Davis, who jumps straight to a DI head coaching job from DIII Randolph-Macon - the school Gregg Marshall came from.

Wichita State is making major changes in their Athletic Department - moving their AD up into an admin as Vice President of Student Affairs
(although he will retain some AD functions) and moving their Assistant Director of Athletics up as well.

Ryan Pedon has been hired as assistant coach on the staff at Butler - by Butler's head coach Chris Holtman...

a couple interesting things - Pedon is currently a "Special assistant" to coach John Groce atUniversity of Illinois as he makes this jump to Butler assistant...
and that's exactly the path taken formerly by Brandon Miller a couple years ago who went from being Illini "Special Assistant" to Butler assistant - then Brandon Miller jumped to Butler's head coaching spot when Bradley Steven took the Boston Celtics job.
So looks like Illinois is becoming the pipeline to Butler....

Also Ryan Pedon was the Director of Basketball Operations at Kent State in 2003-2005 at the exact same time that Geno Ford was the assistant coach there under head coach Jim Christian.

More news-
Lindenwood (Missouri) head basketball coach and past Saint Louis Univ. head coach Brad Soderberg has been hired as an assistant coach
at Virginia filling the spot vacated by Ritchie McKay
who left to become head coach at Liberty Univ.
Given the average salary of ACC assistants compared to DII coaches, he has probably just tripled or quadrupled his salary.

Former Missouri State & Tennessee assistant coach (under Cuonzo Martin) Kent Williams has been hired as assistant at SIUE.
He played his college ball at SIU-Carbondale.

One more note...
Air Force Academy enrollment (3,993 total) is about 80% male & only 20% female..
and they only sponsor half as many sports for women as men...and their Air Force (Mountain West Conference) women's basketball team
has been historically really bad (just coming off a 2-28 season) - and yet...
when hiring a new women's basketball head coach they had 150 applicants!!!

I must have fallen asleep there...I thought Miller went straight from Illinois to Butler HC and then Collier hired Holtmann with HC experience to be the man behind the man. Pedon replaced Miller in the same spot.

Holtmann, Groce (who played under Lickliter in HS) and Stevens (asst under Lick at Butler) were very tight over the years trading frequent phone calls multiple times a week. When Stevens left Brandon got the benefit of the doubt as he had spent time with Groce on the Ohio State staff and was a former Butler player. Holt stepped in as HC following BM's demise and as a former team mate at Taylor U remains close to Groce. Pedon moving over to round out the staff that was cobbled together when CH ascended is not a huge surprise. Butler is usually one that moves guys up the bench (shrews, archie, nored) but several of those defected to the south. I think i got all that pretty accurate and documentable.

Gawd basketball is interconnected. Keeping track of who is who is interesting.
