2014-2015 coaching carousel

I think Marshall finds himself at the crossroads. Does he want to be swimming with the sharks of the SEC, especially at THE football school, and be a little fish in the big ocean. Wichita has become the big fish in the small pond. As long as he is there Wichita is almost guaranteed to be playing in the NCAA tournament. No matter how good a coach he is there's no such guarantee at Alabama.

I didn't get to hear GM on Mike & Mike but (heard this second hand) that he really has his head on straight. He said when the season is over he will sit down w/ his staff and decide what they want to do. Would he listen to offers at that time? He said he would but it would have to be something that really intrigued him and his staff. He said the ultimate decision maker though is his wife. He said his agent says to him all the time is that he is satisfied right where he is at and doesn't have to make a move just to make more money. He said (if I heard it right) that happiness is where you're at right now.
Talk about a guy w/ his head on straight.

Wichita State assistant Steve Forbes will be announced tomorrow as the new East Tennessee State head coach.

Donnie Tyndall out at Tennessee. Tennessee recently spoke to NCAA about his previous infractions at SoMiss. Must not have been good.

The NCAA met with University of Tennessee yesterday to officially inform them of the findings from their investigation.

One interesting comment from that CBSSports article-

One thing working in Tyndall's favor: UT's administration wants to keep him...."Everyone is 100% behind him".
fire him this quickly.

So the findings must have been bad for them to

And with Tennessee's job now open, add one more possible option to Gregg Marshall's list. There are already rumors Tennessee will go after Marshall.
Other names mentioned- Brad Underwood and Mike White.

Guessing that the Marshall plan in Kansas is now over---Greasy Greggy will not be able to turn down the big bucks that will be thrown his way--and Baker will enter the draft the WuShocks will be coach searching in a week or so too.

Now that Tennessee's job has opened up again, they have run thru a bunch of coaches in recent years. This will be their 9th head coach in 26 years, and 4th since 2011....

1989- Don DeVoe steps down
1994- Wade Houston fired
1997- Kevin O'Neill fired
2001- Jerry Green fired
2005- Buzz Peterson fired
2011- Bruce Pearl fired
2014- Cuonzo Martin steps down
2015- Donnie Tyndall fired
..Next??

Steve Lavin may be out at St. John's...
Steve Lavin and St. Johns working on a contract extension...
Bye bye Lavin

Wow that all happened quick -
Steve Lavin was near the end of his initial contract term signed in 2010 - and probably was told he would not get a raise - may even been told to accept some scaling back of his salary (thought to be over $2 mil - maybe $2.5) if he wanted to be extended ....given his limited NCAA success.

Something must have fallen apart and now he's gone - they would have had to buy out only one year..

Announcement also expected shortly that Texas' Rick Barnes also is fired...
Gregg Marshall is definitely playing his cards right... now he will have three big schools willing to offer big bucks for him --
Or maybe Wichita & Texas trade head coaches ?

so what's the story on Lavin - seems like nobody has any actual info on why the guy was fired...

I have been hearing for years how GREAT of a coach he is and how great he's doing at St. John's - plus they won 20 & made the NCAA again this season..

So why would they fire the guy???
Anyone know?

One rumor is that Lavin had a higher opinion of his services than SJU did and wanted a 5 year extension at $2-3 mil/yr

One report is that he wants the Arizona State job!

Couldn't blame him for wanting the job in the desert compared to New York.

Texas reportedly just fired Rick Barnes, but has not announced it officially yet.
The top 2 candidates are Gregg Marshall and Shaka Smart.

Texas would be a better situation than Alabama. Better recruiting base and Texas won't be outbid. Should be interesting days for Marshall.

Gregg Marshall, who just a few days ago said publicly he would listen to an offer from Alabama, now says publicly that Alabama should "move on".
http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2015/03/gregg_marshall_tells_alabama_t.html

What made Marshall change his mind is that the Texas job is now open, and they have just as much money to spend. Plus, Marshall has already indicated he is interested in the Texas job.

Hard to believe after all that, DePaul hires Dave Leitao back...

Chris Mullin is expected to be St. John's new head coach --
wonder if their press will go ballistic about his complete lack of any coaching experience?
