Why Didn't Les Talk to the Team

Why didn't Jim Les talk to his team after being fired? Is it because the school wouldn't allow it or was it his own doing? Prosser's quotes in yesterday's Journal Star stated that Les wasn't able or didn't talk to the team after being fired.

I'm just curious what happened and what usually happens after a collegiate coach is sacked.

Les talked to the team Saturday night. He was fired at 8 am Sunday- and he was told to stay away from campus and to turn in all keys. That's usually how firing works. I suppose it wouldn't prevent anyone from calling him, but he is persona non grata on campus.

Ok, so the Saturday night talk was probably the "I'm going to get fired" talk. That's reassuring. It sounded as if he didn't have that last moment with his team, and that would of been terribly sad.

Jim Les an unwelcome person on Bradley's campus? I think that is just a tad bit extreme. Let's not forget he is still one of the best players to ever play for Bradley. I am sure he was told to turn in his keys, but I can't believe they would bar him from being on campus. If true----WOW!

You can take it to the bank. He is not allowed on campus and most likely has a gag order until the financial end is worked out. Even then we probably will never hear the whole story as part of the severence package. It's called a gag order.

Of course he's "welcome" but he's not just gonna loiter around campus...

Les to FGCU?

Les to FGCU?

Les to FGCU?

Florida Gulf Coast University men??™s basketball coach Dave Balza confirmed to the Daily News Thursday afternoon that he no longer is employed by the school.

A clearly stunned Balza forced an awkward smile and said as he exited Alico Arena and his meeting with second-year athletic director Ken Kavanagh, ???You??™ll have to ask him,??? when asked if he was fired by Kavanagh or if he resigned.

Tom McIntyre: The answer to the question everybody wants to know. Jim, what's your decision.
Jim Les: Umm, next fall...man, this is very tough, ummm, next fall I'm going to take my talents to West Beach.

He addressed the team, as DC mentioned, Saturday night and also following the tournament game Friday.

He was aware of the decision.

Personally, the way the KK and JL firings have gone down have left a bad taste in my mouth.

Whether you wanted the guys gone or not, running them off campus like they're some sort of threat is absurd.

I understand laws and HR policy, but athletics is not a typical job and neither of these guys are any sort of threat to the campus.

Hahaha this made me laugh. With all this depressing news about Bradley, I needed that.

This sqaushes that:

"One name that is not on Kavanagh's radar is Jim Les, whom Kavanagh hired during his 13-year tenure as AD at Bradley. Les took Bradley to the Sweet 16 in 2006, and was 154-140 overall in nine seasons, but the Braves dipped to 12-20 this season, causing Bradley AD Michael Cross to fire the former Braves player Sunday."

"I certainly was very disappointed to hear the news, and I reached out to him as a friend, but there's no mutual interest on Jim or my part in working together down here at FGCU, although I wish the best for him and his family," Kavanagh said.

Balza was given plenty of time and his contract was almost out anyway -- he knew the end was near....Ken simply gave him every chance and Balza didn't get-R-done..
As for JL to FGCU -- I think that's a bit premature......JL needs to be sure he doesn't do anything that would void his end of the agreement.....

Wow! That would stink if he wanted to come back and watch a few games next year!

So how long is he banned from campus? Until the contract issues are worked out? Or until a certain amount of time passes per the firing?

I would think Les would have no problem watching his Braves play on the road. I know Dino Guadio watched Wake Forest play at Xavier this past year during a tribute to Skip Prosser.

Yeah, but that still doesn't answer why he has to stay away for the time being. And are you implying that Guadio is still not allowed on the Wake Forest campus after all this time?

I would think it is standard procedure when a coach is let go. Kind of like a "non-compete" clause for sales guys. I'd guess there's at least a 2 year ban. This is probably just to keep him from becoming a distraction to whoever the new guy is.

Well that's a shame, though I suppose most coaches do stay away for x amount of time once they are fired. Hopefully he will surface somewhere else in the not too distant future. Heck, he can even become an assistant coach to his brother Tom up here in Niles at Notre Dame High School if he wants to! :D

Think about it. If you're trying to keep all your current players from transferring, why would you let a potentially disgruntled former coach talk to them?

I'm sure, as they were negotiating severance, there were terms laid out about who he can and can't talk to.

When you fire someone in an office, you typically escort them out of the building. This is the same thing...just on a more public scale.
