Sampson Does it Again!!!!

It is obvious that this stuff is just routine for Kelvin Sampson, and IU can only hope, as they have done so many times in the past, that the NCAA will look the other way because this is one of their favorites and a BCS school at that.
I really don't expect the NCAA to make any more of a deal with these violations than they did with the recruiting violation Jerry Wainwright committed when he sneaked in to make a home visit on Manual Cass during a NO-CONTACT period, or the massive monetary violations that have been disclosed with regards to Reggie Bush.
If they were really serious about penalizing IU for these illegal phone calls, they'd find out who the calls were to, and
prohibit that recruit from going to Indiana!!
I suspect strongly, given the timing involved that some of these illegal calls helped them get Matt Roth.

But please let me hear from the Kelvin Sampson supporters who have been telling me that I have been too harsh on poor little Kelvin for his terrible graduation rates AND all the past violations he has committed and then justified as necesary so he can compete with the other schools he's up against.



In the end....this stupid action by KS has cost him one scholarship for 2008, the one they were holding onto so they could land Tyler Zeller.
But now Kelvin giving a scholarship to Matt Roth looks like a bad move, because he clearly wanted Zeller MORE. Had he not gone after
Matt Roth, then he'd have two rides left, and the loss of this one by the penalty would still have given him one for Zeller.
So in the end, his stupidity and his need to land Roth have cost him the player he was banking the future on.



By the way, Sampson already holds the ALL TIME RECORD in the NCAA for the sheer numbers of NCAA violations, with his 600 or more phone calls.
This only puts his all time record further out of reach!
 
It is amazing how Indiana University has apparently abandoned all of its ethics just to get wins.

Under Bob Knight, there were controversies involving Knight's temper/personality, but no one ever suggested that any cheating was going on. In fact, Knight often ranted about the cheating that he believed was going on at Kentucky and Illinois at the time. Hoosier fans could always take solace in the fact that their program was clean.

Sampson has to be the dirtiest coach in D1 athletics right now. How sad for the Hoosiers...
 
Sampson is pure scum. Before it's said and done, he'll be mentioned with the Dave Bliss's and Jim Harrick's of the world. Hopefully, that will make him a coaching pariah like it has those two scumbags.
 
And surprisingly to their credit, many IU fans are expressing disbelief in their posts, and some even calling for firing Sampson.
That won't happen, though, as he was hired for two reasons only, to win and to land Eric Gordon.

Based on a news conference today, here are some further details of the situation:

(keep in mind, that Kelvin Sampson violated the very terms of his NCAA sanctions....he was NOT to be making these phone calls!!)


---one of the IU assistant coaches, Rob Senderoff, was fully implicated in arranging and pulling off all these illegal phone calls, and Senderoff will be penalized by being unable to recruit off-campus for a year. Of course no such restriction was placed on the head coach, Kelvin Sampson.

---one of the reporters noted that when Kelvin Sampson was hired, Athletic Director Rick Greenspan said if Sampson committed further NCAA violations after being hired, "....if there were future problems that you would potentially be able to terminate his contract."
He was asked point blank if Sampson would be fired for these further offenses.
Answer.........in a long, convoluted gobbledygook statement...nope...

We had an issue with the phone calls and we have some things worked out and think that this is something that we can be 100%, not 99% or 99.5%, but that we can be 100% compliant on this as we move forward."

So...he's claiming he was unaware....that he thinks it was only ONE violation, that he really thinks he followed the rules, that all of this is blown way out of proportion since he follows the rules most of the time!!!!!!

Sampson will continue to be the coach at Indiana as long as his cheating benefits the basketball team in getting top notch recruits; he was and still is a cheat and the ncaa is about the only one that can stop him from continually breaking the rules; the other schools should be complaining about his actions as he clearly has an unfair advantage.

Sometimes in the heat of "rushing" perspective players you bend or break some rules. If it results in getting the best class in years was it worth it?
 
Bingo...you hit it right on the head....the frequency that violators get caught,
and the scarcity that they actually get any significant penalties, is NO DETERRENT
to using whatever cheating is required to get the top recruits you want,
and this is the philosophy that Kelvin Sampson lives by.
 
A couple weeks ago I was talking to my wife's cousin who is a die-hard Indiana fan, and I asked him what Indiana fans think of Kelvin Sampson and all his antics, and he told me that they all love him over there. I don't know if this latest scandle would change his mind, but I guess most people are willing to put up with crap if they are winning.
 
Of course Majik...winning is everything, and they see a fine recruiting class and the chance to win. Don't expect KS to be fired.

In the 2nd half of the teleconference interview from above, a couple more funny comments were made.

First, it was revealed that during the one year that Kelvin Sampson was under sanctions and could not make phone calls, that the assistants simply called the recruits, and asked the recruits to call back and ask for Sampson or texted them to do so....because that way it was technically NOT covered by the sanctions.
Here is one of Kelvin's statements.........now remember, that any call to a recruit BY KS was illegal under his sanctions, and any 3-way phone call where he was online and listening in while another assistant called the kid was also illegal........

"There was certainly no intent to think that we were above the law. The rules that we broke were mistakes but not mistakes where we are hitting our chest and thinking we don't need to worry about this. ...
Under NCAA rules you are allowed to make three way calls. That is not against the NCAA rules. The sanctions that were put on us stated that I was not allowed to receive three way calls.
I was allowed to text kids and a lot of times that is how kids would call. Because of the area that I live in a lot of times the calls would go straight to voice mail or a lot of times would just be missed calls. Then a lot of times you would text a kid and the text would not go...you know there were just some logistic issues in that area. A lot of times I would call Coach Senderoff or Coach McCallum---because of the restrictions we were under, I could not make the call. From May 25th to May 25th I made no calls either on my cell phone or my home phone. All the times I corresponded with these kids, they would call me. On the occasion where there would be three way calls as we found out as we looked at the records, these kids could not get in touch with me and that is what happened"

So there.......he simply found ways to confound the rules and still he got caught because he didn't care to check if what he was doing was illegal!! He just didn't bother to check since he didn't care.


BUT.......this is a smoke screen by Sampson as if the 3-way phone calls were the only violations.....

when pressed by reporters' questions, the independent investigators' legal counsel responded with:

"There were other problem calls as referenced in the press release and as you will see in the report. There were some other calls that were discovered in our investigation because as we looked at the three way calls we wanted to ensure that the investigation was as thorough as possible. We requested the home phone records of all the coaches. All four coaches which they provided voluntarily. In reviewing the home records we did find that two different coaches including Coach Senderoff did make recruiting phone calls from home that were not documented with the compliance office and some of those calls did result in issues with the sanctions and a third of those calls resulted in NCAA violations"

So....once the coaches' home phone records were reviewed, lots more illegal phone calls by them (Kelvin Sampson included) were revealed, and this has not been made public yet!!


The vast majority of the reader comments to the Indy Star article (Da Coach's link) are calling for NCAA President Myles Brand to exert the SAME Zero tolerance rule that he used to force Bobby Knight out at Indiana.
They want to see Kelvin fired! These are Indiana fans!!

If it was a second offense after the first had not generated any worthwhile results, and left the place in shambles causing one to have to leave that place, then probably not.

This is out of the Indy newspaper article that is in this post. This is the part that makes me wonder why Matt or more importantly his parents would want him to attend IU? If this was my kid I would be doing everything within my power to keep him from going to IU. At this point in a kids life people like Sampson will have a big impact on Matt's development as an adult. This is a pattern of unethical behavior that does not seem to change with so called penalties.

I know Matt has the right to do whatever he thinks is best for him but I see a train wreck coming for Matt and unfortunately he will only get one chance to enjoy his college days!!!

OK, so is it any wonder when the players break the laws, that it's just considered a "mistake"
or an "error in judgment" and never actually anything improper or illegal?
This stuff will never end if they always make excuses for their illegal behavior.
 
And it is obvious they knew all this last week and intentionally suppressed it until they could host their Midnight Madness,
and impress the new recruits. Kelvin even knows how to take advantage of the sanctions.
 
The NCAA Committee on Infractions has all the info submitted by IU and will have a chance to rule on these recent violations--

What bothers me a little is this statement by the University President--
IU president Michael McRobbie said in a statement that he was "very disappointed" and that "it appears that the coaching staff's impermissible actions were a result of carelessness, as opposed to any deliberate attempt to evade the sanctions."
"We play by the rules at Indiana University, and we will not tolerate any sort of carelessness and inattentiveness that might give the public cause to doubt our commitment to the rules," McRobbie's statement said.

Sorry, I don't buy it that it was simple carelessness.
The president of the University should not be trying to minimize or excuse these obvious and flagrant violations by a coaching staff already under tight resrictions for previous violations.

What makes the case unique is that three-way calls don't violate NCAA rules and are generally allowed. But in this case, they violated a restriction imposed on Sampson by the committee on infractions.

So does anyone, including the IU Pres think that Kelvin Sampson did not know fully well that when he got onto those 3-way calls that he was breaking the rules placed on him?
He had to know he was breaking the rules again, but that he thought he wouldn't get caught. I know these are not such major violations, but it does show that Coach Sampson seems to think he is above the rules, and that he is bigger than IU and the NCAA and can violate whatever rule he wants, whenever he wants.

By the way, here is another line from the article--
Green Harris' report also found 35 phone calls made by assistant coaches that violated NCAA recruiting rules. That's the issue that got Sampson in trouble with the NCAA at Oklahoma.

So there were 35 calls among those cited that were completely illegal. These could have been calls made during a non-contact period, or other illigal calls. So why are they trying to make excuses? Sampson is responsible for these calls, even if they were made by assistants. This is exactly what he got into trouble at Oklahoma for. Even 1 such call should be sufficient to dismiss him and his staff for just cause. But that won't happen because of one more line from the article--
On Friday, 13,000 IU fans had ushered in the new season by watching the team scrimmage. The Hoosiers, with star freshman Eric Gordon, the reigning Indianapolis Star Indiana Mr. Basketball from North Central High School, are among the favorites to win the Big Ten Conference.
