Recruiting needs

There have been reports that Tucker is no longer with the team - he hasn't played in a single game since early December
...kinda odd given that he was an NJCAA Preseason All American

Doby likewise played only in a couple early season games against very low level opponents, and I do not believe he has played in a game since November -
Given he's also bounced around from team to team to team - are you sure you want this guy?

If he moves from team to team and gets no minutes, I wonder if Coach Wardle is still interested in Doby? We just granted a release to a big guy who got no minites.

I wouldn't be interested knowing these things.

there would be big concerns if they are no longer on the team and thus possibly no longer finishing their studies on scholarship...
if their academics are deficient then I can't imagine they'd be accepted academically at Bradley

Seriously- are we that desperate to go after borderline guys who are being dismissed from teams repeatedly for violations like drug arrests...or who have reneged on their commitments multiple times - including even SIGNING a LOI then stiffing BRADLEY once before...
You want these guys and we don't even know if they are in school and recruitable?

T, I believe you are the one that has been mentioning Tucker. No one here suggested we recruit them. DC said they were among the ones mentioned and still available and no sugggestion that we recruit them.

I will say that I appreciate the following of potential recruits on this board.

LTF, thanks for coming to my defense. I have never suggested these are players Bradley should sign. I think I made it quite clear with my posts that I was merely listing names of available players "for entertainment value" only. And to demonstrate that there are quality players still available from a variety of sources.

And you are correct. A search shows that there are 162 posts in the archives of this message board that mention Michael Tucker or were posted in threads about Michael Tucker, and 95 of them were posted by Tornado.

Some people are a little touchy today. :)

I follow and offer updates on a myriad of past Bradley players & signees.....nobody's forced to read any of them.
But I haven't brought up or talked about Tucker for a long time..and certainly have had my concerns about recruiting him due to his numerous changes in course and then his disappearance from the juco team last December... as well as several other "disappearances" from other former teams.

The reason I even got involved in the discussion was that Tucker's name was brought up again as if a recruitable player at juco but I seriously doubt that he is since it appears he has left the team so I offered that correction.

The last time I ever talked about him was four months ago - LINK
although his name is on our recruiting target list that I have reposted several dozen times - which then got erroneously described as me posting about him 95 times.
LOL - almost every one of those 95 was just a quote or repost of that list in this thread.

I'm watching Rutgers knock off Ohio State and advance for the first time ever in the Big Ten Tourney...

their big man is a huge 7-footer, CJ Gettys, that they landed as a grad transfer...
He was a key player defensively and grabbed 9 rebounds- so just maybe we ought to wait and see which grad transfers become available and who might want to come on and play right away...
I think a big grad transfer is what we ought to look at since we only have 2 rides for next year.

Another former Bradley recruit becomes available again- please note that I am not recommending that Bradley recruit or sign this kid. This post is for informational and entertainment purposes only.
Hope this disclaimer prevents anyone from getting hysterical.

Carlos Anderson, a 2015 recruit, and a 6'4" guard from Alton HS that received some recruiting interest from Bradley-
www.bradleyfans.com/vb/showthread.php?t=23162

He committed and signed with SIU-E in the fall of 2014 when Lennox Forrester was still the head coach. But SIUE changed coaches in April, 2015, and hired Jon Harris. So Anderson has now played 2 seasons there for Harris. He started every game as a freshman and averaged 10.3 ppg and 4.7 rpg. As a sophomore, he was a starter, but his averages dropped a little to 7.8 ppg and 3.1 rpg.
http://www.siuecougars.com/sports/m-baskbl/2016-17/bios/anderson_carlos_mgt0?view=career&pos=sh

He was released by SIUE today.

LOL ...Disclaimer

LOL ...Disclaimer

That was a good one, Da Coach!! There is a lot of interest from Bradley fans as is in evidence on Bradleyfans.com.

So.. he's a starter, one of their top 3 or 4 players..and he's cut loose without explanation?
..and we have only one open scholarship.....

#9 Shakur Juiston- 16.7 ppg & 11.6 rpg- 6'7", 220 lb, plays at Hutchinson CC, a pretty good juco program- not committed anywhere, but one offer from Niagara-....

Shakur Juiston has been blowing up and getting lots of attention...
he must also be getting good grades - that always helps when you're also pretty good - so you get a lot of offers even from schools whose APR is lacking..

Anyway - he just listed his top final nine schools that he is gonna choose from..looks like he's gonna aim high..hope he doesn't make the mistake Freddy McSwain did and find himself getting a lot of splinters next year...

He lists:
Rutgers, St. Joe’s, VCU, UConn, Kansas, Iowa State, UNLV, Oklahoma, Rhode Island
looks like Bradley is already out of the picture..
http://www.zagsblog.com/2017/03/14/juco-star-shakur-juiston-eight-top-schools/

several of our coaches were seen at multiple sessions down at the Civic Center this past weekend...(both 3A & 4A)
Hard to know who they were targeting but...some of the players are already kids we had been watching

Here's a list of the possible recruiting targets on the teams that were in town this past weekend with a ** by the names that it has been reported that our staff had been viewing..

3A
Fenwick - DJ Steward, just a freshman, has no offers; Jacob Keller getting DI Offers (Siena, Vermont) - also getting football interest
Bloomington - Chris Payton (just a sophomore, ISU has offered); Dazon Farris (6-2, 18 ppg, getting DI interest)
Morgan Park - Nimari Burnett (freshman, great shooter); Melo Burrell**, Ayo Dosunmu (mult. offers); Lenell Henry (6-9)
Springfield Lanphier - Yaakema Rose**; Aundrae Williams**; Cardell McGee (ISU has offered)

4A
Whitney Young - Xavier Castaneda**; Lucas Williamson (UIC, Green Bay..have offered); Javon Freeman; Tyler Beard
Palatine Fremd - Kyle Sliwa (6-1 guard hits 45% from 3-pt)
Bolingbrook - Kaleb Thornton**; Malik Binns
Simeon - Talen Horton-Tucker**; Messiah Jones**

Max Bielfeldt may be trying to help Bradley with their recruiting!

"ATTN schools looking to win conf championship:
Mark Donnal is now on the market as an eligible grad transfer.
Michigan 2/2 (Championships) past 2 years!"

https://twitter.com/MaxBielfeldt/status/846483675772583943

Numbers are not mind-blowing but then he is way more suited to mid-major...
I'd love to see us inquire.

6-10
3 years of Big Ten experience, coached by John Beilein, hits 62% of his shots, 78% on FTs,
and ELIGIBLE IMMEDIATELY as grad transfer...

Since fans are now focused on recruiting and the biggest needs that Bradley has, and since the most frequent comment I hear from fans is that we need a juco big man or rebounding inside player, I looked at the leading rebounders in Division I NJCAA-
http://www.njcaa.org/sports/mbkb/2016-17/div1/players?pos=bc&sort=trebpg

I am not real familiar with any of these kids, so I do not claim to suggest they are D1-ready players or that they would fill Bradley's needs, nor that Bradley coaches should be recruiting them. I don't know their situation, or whether they would even consider coming to Bradley. I'll leave all that to the coaches. But these are all sophomores who have at least 2 seasons of eligibility left.
This is purely for fans' entertainment.

But of the top rebounders in NJCAA Division I, I notice that the majority of them are not yet committed anywhere.

Here is a rundown of the Top 20 JUCO rebounders-

The #1 rebounder in D1 juco Cletrell Pope of nearby Southeastern Illinois CC-
http://www.njcaa.org/sports/mbkb/2016-17/div1/players/cletrellpopeym18
http://verbalcommits.com/players/cletrell-pope

#1 Cletrell Pope- is 6'8" sophomore at SE Illinois CC averaging a whopping 14.1 rpg. He also averages 13.6 ppg.
Verbal commits does not show any offers, except a couple midmajors that offered him way back in high school that are not likely valid offers currently-
http://verbalcommits.com/players/cletrell-pope

Anyone with his size who can average 13.6 ppg & 14.1 rpg in a competitive juco league like SE Illinois CC plays in would seem like someone who might be able to play at D1. And he is not very far away from Peoria in Harrisburg, Illinois, though he is originally from Alabama-
http://www.sic.edu/student-activities/athletics/mens-basketball/roster/2016-2017/cletrell-pope

Most of the others on that list of top rebounders also have no D1 offers:
http://www.njcaa.org/sports/mbkb/2016-17/div1/players?pos=bc&sort=trebpg

#2 Devere Creighton- averages 13.6 ppg & 13.2 rpg - he plays for a private juco in NY City (ASA New York), and I can't even find the kid in recruiting databases
#3 Nashere Mackey- averages 15.1 ppg & 12.4 rpg - he plays for Daytona State CC, and has NO D1 offers according to Verbalcommits. Just a D2 offer from Embry-Riddell (never heard of them- they just joined D2 two years ago)-
http://verbalcommits.com/players/nashad-mackey
#4 Adam Traore- averages 17.4 ppg & 12.3 rpg at Broward CC, a pretty good juco
He does not have any college offers-
http://verbalcommits.com/players/adam-traore
He is not real big, but I'd take a chance on a kid who scores 17.4 ppg and grabs 12.3 rpg-
http://www.broward.edu/studentlife/athletics/Pages/2016-17-Mens-Basketball-Roster.aspx#Step3
#5 Miguel Simon is a teammate of Adam Traore at ASA New York. he averages 12.2 ppg & 12.2 rpg. He also has no offers.
#6 Bruce Stevens- 16.8 ppg & 11.9 rpg- at Jones County CC- powerful 6'8" kid who has 4 crappy midmajor offers-
http://verbalcommits.com/players/bruce-stevens
#7 Josh Boutte- 16.0 ppg & 11.7 rpg at Dodge City CC. He is committed to UNCW.
#8 Raynere Thornton - 11.0 ppg & 11.6 rpg- 6'7", 220 lbs. This kid does have some good offers, but is not committed-
http://verbalcommits.com/players/raynere-thornton
#9 Shakur Juiston- 16.7 ppg & 11.6 rpg- 6'7", 220 lb, plays at Hutchinson CC, a pretty good juco program- not committed anywhere, but one offer from Niagara-
http://verbalcommits.com/players/shakur-juiston
#10- Jason Burnell- 20.2 ppg & 11.1 rpg- committed to lowly Jacksonville State
http://verbalcommits.com/players/jason-burnell
#11 Usman Haruna- 7-foot, 215 lbs.- 9.8 ppg & 11.1 rpg- no D1 offers

#13 Renard Lane- 15.7 ppg & 10.9 rpg

http://verbalcommits.com/players/adarius-avery
#15 Rashawn Fredericks- 13.5 ppg & 10.6 rpgredshirt freshman at Motlow State who might have 3 years of eligibility at a D1 school. he has no D1 offers.

#36 Vance Johnson- Bradley recruit Vance Johnson ranks 36th on the rebounding list averaging 9.0 rpg and 13.6 ppg
http://www.njcaa.org/sports/mbkb/2016-17/div1/players/vancejohnson2ut7
UW-Milwaukee remains his only D1 offer-
http://verbalcommits.com/players/vance-johnson

I don't have time to research farther down the list, but a brief overview again shows that most are not committed anywhere. Considering that 4 of the 5 players on the MVC All Newcomer team are juco power forwards who contributed immediately to making their teams better (Alize Johnson [MSU- Newcomer of the Year], Aundre Jackson [Loyola- 6th man of the Year], Darrall Willis [WSU] & Phil Fayne [ISU]), it seems likely Bradley might benefit from a scoring & rebounding juco power forward. JMHO.
Was just looking back a year at all the players that were available and some said we needed to get..

I won't waste your time on all of them, but extremely few panned out

#1- Cletrell Pope went to Bethune-Cookman but didn't qualify so he never played. But then that's probably why nobody was recruiting him and I am glad we didn't either.

#2 - Devere Creighton - ditto- didn't qualify, didn't play anywhere

#3 - Nashad (not Nashere) Mackey - good player, but obviously didn't have academics to go DI, went to Embry-Riddle (DII) avg 17 ppg but would have been a wasted scholarship if he couldn't play DI

#4 - Adam Traore - went Coppin St. & avg 6 ppg

#5 - Miguel Simon - can't find him anywhere

#6, 7, etc...and so it goes - virtually every one on the list was a bust or disappeared...so in the end our recruiting staff knew all that and smartly laid off these guys.
....and your aforementioned Vance Johnson was of no great help at Milwaukee...

the rare exceptions are
#9 Shakur Juiston - wouldn't have come to Bradley was aiming lots higher - went to UNLV & had a very good season on rebuilding team
#14 - Adarius Avery - went to Loyola, and despite being a good scorer in juco, couldn't do squat in DI, played sparingly, had injuries and now he's left Loyola & transferring, so if anyone still thinks he can help them, he's fully available.
#17 Reggie Scurry - went to Missouri State, did OK in some games as Alize Johnson's backup, but had the injury, coach got fired, and now he has transferred.
#19 Mohamed Thiam - wasn't a 2017 recruit anyway so he is still at Marshalltown juco if anyone still wants him.
He had a good year by juco standards, but he still has virtually non-existent interest and no offers. Your guess is as good as mine but I have to think someone knows something.
...so there, you listed 21 guys and now in retrospect not one is a real recruiting miss since not one that we would have been able to get would have done us any good

First, note the disclaimer I posted with that list from a year ago-
I am not real familiar with any of these kids, so I do not claim to suggest they are D1-ready players or that they would fill Bradley's needs, nor that Bradley coaches should be recruiting them. I don't know their situation, or whether they would even consider coming to Bradley. I'll leave all that to the coaches. But these are all sophomores who have at least 2 seasons of eligibility left.
This is purely for fans' entertainment.

Nowhere was I proposing that Bradley should recruit any of them, nor was I predicting that they would be successful at the D1 level.

But to say "extremely few panned out", is not entirely accurate. There were a few others who did pan out at D1 schools.
You did list some exceptions, but you overlooked these on the list:

Kyvon Davenport was the 2nd leading scorer at Memphis and averaged 13.3 ppg and 6.1 rpg. Not bad.

Raynere Thornton also went to Memphis, and averaged 5.4 ppg and 3.9 rpg in 21 mpg. He shot 38% from three. Even those kinds of numbers could have helped Bradley more than what we got from out late recruit.

Jason Burnell went to Jacksonville State and was their 2nd leading scorer. He averaged 11.2 ppg and 6.0 rpg

Bruce Stevens played a key role for Ole Miss and averaged 10.8 ppg and 5.3 rpg.

Nashad Mackey was a stud for D2 Embry-Riddle- 17.3 ppg and 12,5 rpg, leading the team in both categories. Are you sure he didn't qualify for D1? I can't find that stated anywhere. Looks like he probably could have been successful if he had gone to a D1

And there were many other junior college kids not listed (that was just a list of top rebounders in the NJCAA) who were late signees who contributed at D1 schools and produced a lot more than the juco Bradley signed late.
My point was that there are some D1 caliber kids available late, and maybe it is a bit of a crapshoot, but some do contribute.

Again, I was never suggesting Bradley should recruit any of those players on the list, or that they would come to Bradley. And I never claimed they would help if they did.
As I stated, my post was "purely for fans' entertainment".

But considering the contributions by the late recruit that Bradley did end up signing were negligible, it seems like maybe there were others out there that might have contributed more.
