These fantasies of "going big" have got to end.
You know, I have mixed feelings about going Big with this team. I know our bigs aren't gonna be monsters down there, but I feel like we could mix in WE and AT at the same time a bit more, actually I don't think we have ever tried it(may be mistaken on that, but can't recall it ever happening)
Anyway, for example, last night we begin the game with 3 WE jumpers early on in the game, all 15 foot or better. And it appeared to me, by the way he just caught it and shot it on all 3 of em, that he has been encouraged to shoot that shot (my opinion). Now I ask, if you already have 4 players in the game (3 guards, and 1 undersized 4)who are better at doing that than Will, why is that the shot we are lookin for? To me if you are gonna use Will that way, what's the harm in having Thompson in there planted in the post? Why not run a little hi-low, I mean Egolf is a prototypical hi man in that type of sense. If you are gonna have him shooting that shot with no rebounders down there, why not stick AT down there and still have him shoot it? And Im not talking about doing this for huge amounts of minutes, just mix it in a little bit, see if maybe it can't free Will up a little more for that foul line jumper, if they have to at least pay some mind to another possible post threat in AT. I just can't beleive we dont try it at all, I mean we don't even explore the possibility. Also, at 6'8", Milos could also be the Hi man with either AT or WE on the block, but we just don't seem to try this ever. I don't think WE is ever gonna be an offensive down on the block back to the bucket powerhouse, but that doesn't mean he can't be an effective big, just look at someone like Jack Ingram of Illinois a few years back.
I also feel the biggest reason BU cannot, will not go big is our "System" on offense will not allow it. We absolutely cannot have 2 of Will, AT, or SS in at the same time and run the type of motion offense we run. Now, this is up to the coaches to decide if they want to try and implement a new offensive scheme mid season, but we just can't throw the bigs into the current scheme and expect it to work. Too many moving parts and ballhandling opportunities to have 2 of those 3 in there at a time.
When BU went to this offensive scheme after the Sweet Sixteen season it was to utilize the strength of the team which was the guards, and it worked well, but you had guys like Ruff, Will Franklin, JC, A Warren (as a role Player) All of these guys could handle the ball, were better than average shooters, had a high basketball IQ, and above all they really were good passers who moved the ball crisply around that offense. This year, the strength of the team(in my opinion) is still the guards, but they are a different type of guard than the ones mentioned above. (especially with Dodie Out) I think that CR and AW and TB would all benefit more in a quick hitter type of offense, rather than the motion that we currently run. Get AW running off staggered screens, and CR and TB coming of curl screens at the foul line more where they can get to the bucket and use their athleticism/draw fouls. It just seems like we are not executing the motion offense well at all, and our best players (AW, TB, and CR) get lost in it.
IDK, just my rant and opinion after a couple of tough losses.
