Ka'Darryl Bell Commits to BU

Ben, most of the time I enjoy your posts. Not sure I can say I do this one. Really confused about your thinking in regards to the guard situation. Any time a program has a chance to get a talent like Bell then that's a no brainer. Do we need bigs, yes we do but only because we may have missed the boat on several in the past 3 or 4 years. I think what Geno and his staff is bringing in is great. Keep up the good work. I'd bet as we lose a few bigs in the next 2 years ,Geno will bring in replacements that will give us more quality minutes then we have had in the last several years. Now if we can land Paul from Gurnee Warren that will be two great classes in a row.

If anyone wonders why we deleted a few posts, please read our posting rules. We will not allow posters to hijack threads, and we will not allow attacks and unjustified criticism of players or coaches. Those have always been our rules. Posters are welcome to take personal attacks elsewhere.

totally get that the hijack rule was broken.....

attacks and unjustified criticism of players?

Thanks for picking Bradley Ka'Darrryl.

The West Suburban Conference has produced many quality D1 athletes.

wow - I am impressed - Oak Park HS has a number of fine alums...

Ernest Hemingway, Ray Kroc, Paul Harvey, Governor Otto Kerner, Iman Shumpert, and ..Kethy Griffin..although the story on Ray Kroc is interesting, he was a drop-out - quitting school to enlist in the army in WWI

+1

PS The best thing Geno and BU can do to lure/land quality bigs in the future is to make sure they have lots of high quality smalls and mediums on the team roster:!::!:

Why would a quality big go to a program that doesn't have the other pieces to be uber successful like the big would have going BCS:?::?:

The first 3 anyway.

We can agree to disagree on things and all will be well.:) I believe that our roster has one more guard than where we should be for next year. While I don't follow HS basketball, just how good is Bell? I think that guards are fairly easy to recruit. I did some research on Bell and while there are some good articles out there on Bell, I found this one interesting as it goes in depth about what the author perceives as Bell's strengths and weaknesses.

http://illinoishsbasketball.blogspot.com/2011/05/you-dont-know-em-but-you-better-start_16.html

"Overall, Bell is not an overwhelming player that has crazy potential. He is quick and has good point guard size and is a good, at best, passer. One handed passes or behind the back passes would be rarities from Bell, he??™s just an old fashioned two handed passer that gets the ball to the open player. I would like to see him get a better shot and make up for his lack of inside game. His shooting stroke doesn??™t look that bad so he should be able to improve his shot if he works hard enough."

That seems to describe a lot of our guards on the current roster. Don't get me wrong, I hope Bell is a player who will smoke by Daniel Ruffin and is tougher than Maniscalco. Until I see him, I am not going to get too excited. I am excited to see what we have in Shayock and Hodges.

Ben -- I don't know who that blogger is as he chooses not to identify himself - but he calls Dre Henley the best player in the state and his opinion on Bell was written several months ago before the summer AAU season and our coaches actually saw him several times over the summer -- we don't know if this blogger even saw him at all.

Again -- when Sammy went out last December Bradley fans should have certainly realized then if not already before that how important DEPTH at point guard is...

But how much DEPTH do you want at point guard:?: If things stay the same, we have Bell who came here with the promise of immediate PT, JC, DS, and even DSE could handle point in an extreme emergency next year. It is tough to tell having not seen DS and JC, but imho, if we were to go after a guard in this class, it should have been a shooting guard capable of making the three.

Donivine is really the only one with purely point guard experience in HS...the others are combo guards and 2-guards

Maybe we've already got that guy(s) Beni. I believe our shooting woes were magnified by a poor offensive scheme that didn't get the players good open looks, as well as a coach who maybe had guys playing out of position (usually out of necessity due to injuries and lack of depth at the key positions).

There's no reason that Eastman, TB, and DSE can't be outside threats if utilized properly in a system that gets them open looks.

These 3 would be placed at the lowest threat level possible......

I think some of us would like to see a John Diebler role player.

Probably a lot to be said about this. I am curious to see how JE's playing time will be used this year.

What smaller school or mid-major wouldn't want a 5-Star kid, a Jon Diebler, a JJ Redick - hey as long as we're dreaming - why not ask for a Jared Sullinger or Kyrie Irving??
BUT BU has had dominant 7-footers who are lottery picks and fine SG's who average 40%+ on career shooting pct like Diebler (JC, Warren)...
In fact our recruiting over the past half decade has accomplished that more than just about anyone in the Valley...

But let's be realistic -- the only chance we even come close is to get a kid who is under the radar but pans out into something far better than expected.
So if we go that route -- then we are BY DEFINITION going to be landing a group of recruits who some WON'T pan out...
And yet if we do get a Saihou Jassey, a TCS, etc...then people criticize like crazy that it was a scholarship wasted...
I have even seen people call Andrew Warren, Sam Maniscalco, and even DSE poorly spent scholarships!

A mid-major fan base can't have it both ways -- you can't expect a stable of 5-Star caliber kids without an occasional kid who doesn't pan out - yet that's exactly what fans DO clammor for...

I think we've been very fortunate -- Bradley has had plenty of All Conference kids, kids who go on to play professionally, and even kids who play or at least get looks from the NBA..
I fully believe Geno's on the right track -- give the guy time -- here he hasn't even coached a game yet.

Good post. This does describe the level bradley plays at. I hope over time we can step up a level and get some slightly better players like say a Butler. Hopefully style of play can give us some advantage both on the court and in recruiting. But I realize we will never be Kentucky in recruiting. I think it makes me enjoy it when we win or hit on a recruit.

On the second point I didn't realize Diebler was a 5 star. If you are correct he was way over-rated. He was a nice player, but no 5 star as far as I saw.

Questionable threats, but there IS potential there. I would add WL to this list, and MK too. I think we'll see some of these guys with higher accuracy from behind the arc this season, especially for the reason that B4L mentioned.
