Is this BU's second worst decade ever?

Obviously the highpoint, was a huge sweet 16 birth.

But...

1 second in the league
2 seconds in the league tourney is basically it.

This is complete conjecture here as only someone with extreme intelligence could quantify this....

But I would speculate that only the 70's were worse, at least in the modern era.

This could even degenerate into a discussion of when a decade ends I suppose

The 70's is eerily similar league finish-wise. Here's our league finishes that decade -

1970 6th
1971 6th
1972 4th
1973 T8th
1974 2nd
1975 4th
1976 T4th
1977 6th
1978 T5th
1979 T8th

Stowell was coach through '78, Versace took over in '79. We danced in '80, which started a 20 year period where we won 5 league titles and danced 4 times.

5 straight winning seasons
5 straight seasons finishing in the upper half of the MVC
Over 100 games won in these last 5 seasons, and this season is not yet complete.
RPI the last 5 seasons- 33, 38, 105, 98, 108.

Let's make this a rational discussion, and not just another vehicle for the irrational bashing of Bradley. This program has not reached the levels we expect, but it is not the failure that some would like to persuade us. I am not sure you can compare decades so easily, especially since some of the worst phases in Bradley's history overlapped decades. But under Jim Les we have seen nothing that comes close to the futility of 3 straight 20 loss seasons at the end of the Albeck era and the beginning of the Mo era. And the 70's were horrible, too.
Thanks to Dick Versace for rescuing Bradley from the abyss the program was clearly headed to then.

I agree with DC. We have been to the doldrums and back, and we aren't close to that right now. Let's hope we never get there again.

Don't tell Coach Stowell that..... he thinks he's still the best coach ever at BU. Just listen to him every home game!

You're right Coach. Dick V saved the program.

I'm sorry Petey-Boy but I've never heard Stowell say that, nor have I come away with that impression. Maybe you are just overwhelmed by his knowledge of the game.

Question for some of the long time fans on the board. --not meant to diminish DV in any way with this.. But didn't BU throw a lot more money into the program when DV was hired?

Stowell's coaching ability should never be called into question.

Did he struggle? Yes. He did have limited resources, but he also did have some overachieving years too.

The biggest area the lack of resources had an impact was recruiting. And if you talk to ANY coach he faced, including Wooden, he had one of the best reputations in the profession as being able to coach circles around opponents.

He is the most sane one on the radio team.

As everybody knows.... I'm new to this board. In full disclosure - I'm friends with all 3 on the radio team.

I think:
Dave Snell is 100% professional and does a great job.
Chuck Buescher understands the game very well and also does a great job.
Joe Stowell was an outstanding coach for many years. Yes he had some bad years at the end and they went in another direction.

I think Coach Stowell has done a great job in the broadcasting booth, but time to retire and keep playing cards and racquetball with his MANY friends.

Is there something I don't know about this board with Snell and Buescher?

That's his opinion. Many on this board are critical of Coach Les's MVC record, however Coach Stowell had a below .500 record in his career.

FYI...

Stowell - 91-93 in 13 seasons in MVC play, with 3 2nd place finishes. 197-147 overall (.573)

Versace - 97-49 in 8 seasons in MVC play, with 3 1st place finishes, 156-88 overall (.639)

Albeck - 44-34 in 5 seasons in MVC play, 1 1st, 1 2nd, 75-71 overall (.514)

Molinari - 114-92 in 11 seasons in MVC play, 1 1st place, 3 2nd place, 174-152 overall (.534)

Les - 70-74 in 8 seasons in MVC play, with 0 top 3 finishes, 139-118 overall (.541)

why are we starting threads like this? our mission statement is to support bu basketball. seems like a negative thread.

We all support BU hoops. The only message I see is that this decade was not one of our better ones overall. We had two coaches this decade so it's not just a 'bash the coach' thread. I think DC put it perfectly in the 2nd post in this thread.
