Hulman Center / Indy St.

No its BYOB. Thats how we keep the place lively. Seriously.................no beer.................sorry but come on over anyway. We like to see you have a good time.............but we also always like the home team to win!

:p

Have fun, fish! Indy St is my favorite road trip every year...unfortunately I will be at our Christmas with the in-laws that night so I will have to miss it. The Indy St fans are great. Most are knowledgable about the team and opponent and are my favorite fans (along with the Drake fans) in the Valley.

Thanks, so far we've been lucky on our road trips... UWM and Drake were both great with gracious/fun fans. Sounds like Indy St will be the same.

Hulman Center is probably the most sterile stadium I've ever watched a game in. It's a white walled mausoleum and truly an awful experience. The beefhouse stop on the way down is the only redeeming part of the trip. The city itself has one or two decent bars next to the stadium but thats about it. I'd hate to live there. About as depressing a place as it gets.

You do know this is similar to what people say about Peoria and the Civic Center?

Man...I'm crying just reading your post.

A friend and I went up last year. we stood in the upper bowl and yelled the whole game. We had many good conversations with every fan near by. They might have been the nicest I have met.

A pre-game brew can be had at "The Terminal" which is just across the street and thru a parking lot from the south side (Cherry Street) of the Hulman Center. Also have the "Ballyhoo" one block north of the Hulman Center on 9th street. I believe your bus usually unloads on Cherry Street? Both are easy walks.

I have tasted the fine cuisine of "The Terminal" a few times. It's actually not bad food, and it's usually a good place to meet other BU fans before games in Terre Haute. True that there is not much to do in Terre Haute, but nobody who goes for a game ever plans on staying more than the one day, so how many places do you need? I have gone to the game in TH every year since the Larry Bird years, and have always found good places to eat and visit before the games.
There are a few good restaurants 2 miles south of the campus in and near the shopping mall, and even some decent shopping if you have time. I can't comment on the bar scene too much, but I love the trip to TH. I wish there were more MVC sites that were suitable for an over and back same-day trip.

Lived in Terre Haute and Peoria both a considerable amount of time. Neither is drastically better than the other. Peoria has a slight edge with the Minor League sports and such, but TH's proximity to Indy balances it out.

I have to disagree. Peoria and Terre Haute are light years apart. Peoria, inaddition to its minor league sports teams, also boasts Broadway shows, a casino, many more restaurants and bars, some top golf courses, and occasional big-name concerts.
Terre Haute is a few blocks of run down buildings from a time long past. It serves the needs of the farmers who live in the surrounding area, but barely qualifies as a city. The Hulman itself is an abomination. You walk inside and immediately transport to what I picture an asylum to look like, the walls are almost all white inside this monstrosity. I expect orderlies to appear around a corner at any moment. The concession areas are straight out of a 50s high school prom, and the 26 fans who attend these games make the place seem even more hollow inside.

Our group went to BU games there for several years and was always a fun trip. They used to have a room something like the room where the Chief's Club held their party for all Chief Club members last Saturday and we would go in and party with the ISU Blue fans before the game and at halftime. I always thought it was a good place to watch a game and their fans were great.

Not sure how a 90 minute drive 'balances it out'. That's like saying Peoria has a college football team because it's only 90 minutes from Champaign, or that Rockford is a great city because it's only 90 minutes from Chicago. Plus it's less than 1/2 the size of Peoria, both the city and metro area. Gotta side with Peoria on this one.

Like I said, I have lived in both and they both have positives. Terre Haute is smaller, but still has plenty to do. And being able to be in downtown Indy in 60 minutes is a huge plus. Any show that Peoria has Indy is sure to get, and tons more. To get to downtown St. Louis or Chicago from Peoria is at minimum a 3 hour trip, you can get to them from Terre Haute just as quickly. Additionally Peoria has a much larger issue with crime and the public school systems aren't anywhere near as good as a whole (many here will cite Dunlap or Washington, but go look at Dixie Bee or Honey Creek, they are even better). Chitowns comment about being a place for farmers couldn't be further from the truth, Terre Haute has 3 universities, with Rose Hulman being far more prestigious than our BU, a mall that is every bit as good as Northwoods, has some cool sites to see if you know what to look for, etc. The Hulman Center isn't really much different than the Civic Center at all, it is another cookie cutter arena without much personality, we just happen to be partial to Carver. Neither are great, neither are poor, they are what they are. You can have a great trip to Terre Haute and there are some great places to go pre and post game like Moggers, The Terminal, The Bally (for a younger crowd), the Verve, etc. The people in Terre Haute will be cordial and talk BBall, many will even remember that Michael Menser the INSU 'star' from earlier this decade has family in the Peoria area (Morton). I'm not sure why people think 'The Haute' is so bad, it's no better or worse than many of the MVC towns (BN, Cedar Falls, Springfield) and far better than Carbondale. I'm by no means in love with the place, but it'll make a great 1 or 2 day trip for the BU faithful, especially if we come away with a win.

I enjoyed my trip there a few years ago. The Beefhouse was awesome and there was some, err, talented folks at a bar next to the Hulman watching the Colts-Ravens playoff game.
