Conference realignment

Nothing firm, but I am hearing Murray State will not happen

As we posted before, there have been hesitations from both sides that date back to 2017 when Murray State applied to replace Wichita State, and the MVC didn't offer them an invite.

But if they are not meant for the MVC, there will be no shortage of other teams interested. Milwaukee should be at the top of the list, but other strong candidates might be IUPUI, Bellarmine and Lipscomb of the ASUN (Louisville & Nashville), other OVC teams (SIUE, Morehead), Some Summit teams, and a couple other Horizon League teams like Wright State, Northern Kentucky, UIC, and others.

The American Athletic Conference possibly looking to add 6 new members-

Sources: The American Athletic Conference is expected examine expansion this week, with six schools expected to send applications. The AAC is expected to receive an application from – FAU, Charlotte, North Texas, UTSA, Rice and UAB this week. 1/2-

@PeteThamel
The expectation is that they will be accepted and the AAC will grow to a 14-team football league. (Also 14 teams in hoops.)

Such an expansion would produce an enormous, spread-out footprint, meaning lots of travel for a school like Wichita State, which is on the far western edge of that footprint. Would that make Wichita to consider moving to the Mountain West? Or maybe consider a return to the MVC?

AAC officially adds schools:
The American Athletic Conference will add UAB, Texas-San Antonio, Rice, North Texas, Charlotte and Florida Atlantic to the league. The AAC is replacing three schools that are scheduled to depart for the Big 12 Conference and is growing to 14 teams. The conference hopes the move will stabilize the league in the short term and prepare it to withstand future poaching of its members. The additions all come from Conference USA, leaving that league both searching for new members and trying to fend off other poachers. The Sun Belt has said it is interested in expanding beyond its current 10 football members and some of C-USA's remaining eight schools would be geographic fits.

I only think they go if they think they have a realistic pathway to the B12 or AAC a couple years later. It would be a money pit if they get stuck there.

When the MVC was looking, before the Belmont news, the MVC was checking into whether Grand Canyon Univ or
Northeastern Univ. had interest in joining the Valley *

Yes I read that article earlier today. However I think the Author forgot about Wichita State in the American conference. I think that means they actually will have 14 basketball programs after the comings and going’s are completed.

The Colonial Athletic Association to add Hampton, and is also targeting Stony Brook and Monmouth-

This will be Hampton's 3rd conference in 5 years. They switched from the MEAC to the Big South in 2018, and now from the Big South to the CAA in 2022. Ironically, their record has gotten worse each year since they started jumping conferences-

The CAA adding Stony Brook is reportedly a "done deal".

Good luck to Stony Brook Head Coach Geno Ford. The CAA is a much tougher conference than the American East, even though it's been greatly diluted in recent years with the loss of VCU, George Mason, and Old Dominion.

The Ohio Valley Conference, which is reeling from of the loss of a bunch of schools, just added a new member.
These 5 schools left the OVC in the past year-
Belmont and Murray State to the MVC at the end of this academic year
Austin Peay to the Atlantic Sun at the end of this academic year
And Eastern Kentucky, and Jacksonville State to the Atlantic Sun (ASUN) last summer

The former 12 team conference already added Little Rock and University of Southern Indiana (a D2 school transitioning to D1), and has been looking for one more school to add to get to 10 members.
Today they announced they will add Lindenwood University- another Division II school (in St. Charles, Missouri), which is just beginning the transition process to become a Division I school-

Lindenwood has had a pretty decent football program for D2, but their basketball program has not been very good for years.
Teams like SEMO, SIUE, and EIU are assured they won't finish last in the OVC for the foreseeable future.
On the other hand, Southern Indiana University, the other D2 joining the OVC, has had a pretty strong D2 program, though that doesn't translate to Division I.
The OVC is really taking a step down by replacing a teams like Belmont and Murray State with a couple D2 programs.
