CollegeHoops.net Top 144 countdown -- 2008-09

That's great! They have 5 MVC teams in the top 82. That's better than some of the people picking the preseason rankings. If the have ISU 5th, who are the 4 above them? Creighton, SIU, Drake? and one more?

By the way, I have to say Joel Welser of CollegeHoopsNet got all his info correct about the Redbirds, including the slightly obscure stuff like Sampay's injury that was not reported outside of Normal. Considering some of his earlier previews of higher ranked teams had some mistakes involving personnel, he must have called someone at ISU to get things correct. Good job.

#85 is Nebraska....

BUT--- they do miss on one thing........
they say newcomer German import Christopher Niemann
"It is hoped that incoming freshman Christopher Niemann can eventually
replace Maric...
The 6-11 German certainly has the potential to develop into a solid big man,
but it will take some time before he is ready to be a scorer on this team."

but Niemann is not yet cleared by the NCAA and like Lucca Staiger has serious ties to the Euro pro teams that make it kinda likely he won't be able to play....

Here's the answer...
Nebraska head coach Don Sadler said today...
"6-foot-11, 230-pound recruit Christopher Niemann won't be eligible this season because he played
on a German club team that had some professionals on its roster."

http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=452640

So he's being penalized another full season (he already redshirted last year)
because of the Euro-pro rule. BUT-- the latest Drake recruit for 2009, Frank Wiseler also played on the exact same German team....so will this mean that Wiseler won't be available until 2010 because he'll lose a year also??

Wait a minute....notice this line by this writer, Joel Welser...
"Blake Mishler, a transfer from East Tennessee State will be eligible in December, but it is likely he will redshirt the entire season.

Then check out this line from the Pantagraph article titled
"ISU forward Sampay could miss 5 months after surgery"
"Blake Mishler, a 6-8 transfer from East Tennessee State who joined the team last December,
will not be eligible until December and is expected to be redshirted."
http://www.pantagraph.com/articles/2008/08/05/usports/doc4898be4363aad368053107.txt

So given that not only are those two comments comparable and similar, but they are the only two places where I have seen speculation of the truly UNLIKELY situation of Mishler redshirting, since he has already LOST his redshirt year when he transferred, so he might as well play and NOT redshirt.

Given that....it looks to me that Welser got his info about Sampay, Mishler, and other players from this Pantagraph article.

PS-- they project three of the new guys (Oguchi, Phillips, and Hill) as starters (I know Hill isn't really new, but he's a a new teammate for Rubin & Odzic)
if this keeps up then I guess I can figure who will be giving up their scholarships for the incoming guys that Jank seems to be "over-signing".

By the way...the guy doesn't keep up much on Saint Louis either....or maybe he just never read the right articles

His statement "...Daniel Lisch and Dustin Maguire give the Bills plenty of options on the wings"...

but back in May, Dustin Maguire left school and transferred to D-II, and
walk-on Daniel Lisch has already been said to be a redshirt his first year at SLU.

also the guy says...
"Paul Eckerle also returns after averaging 18.1 points per game last year as a freshman"

really??
that's almost what Eric Gordon averaged, maybe this kid Eckerle should have gone pro with numbers like that!
In reality, Eckerle averaged only 3.8 ppg, in nearly 20 minutes per game, pretty slim production.

Wow..we're at least in the 70's....

I must be a pessimist...I thought I was a realist but guessing 111 and being off by AT LEAST 32 says otherwise

Exactly. They say you dream about stuff you see during the day, and I'm on here wayyy too much. I think I have 150 of these 8,000 views ;)

Its funny how we're all keeping such close tabs on such an arbitrary list compiled by someone of limited credibility basing his predictions primarily off of statistical data from last year and lists of incoming recruits. Yet I'm one of the people who is checking this thread every time there is a new post! I guess we're all just getting excited for the upcoming season...only 60 days till the first exhibition!

It really doesn't matter where they have Bradley or anyone else in the MVC...they lost all credibility when they put Tulsa at 106 and 5th in CUSA...

That's starting to be my worry too ... I think my Kool Aid supply is running low.

Calm down. There's no way they left us off. If they did, they're ignorant. BU has established themselves over the past couple of years as, at minimum, an above average team in an above average conference. That's enough to garner a Top 144 spot. We've got some solid talent returning, so on paper we may look a little better than just 'above average'. I think we'll be listed somewhere in the next 10-15 spots.

I'd be worried if they didnt have ISU in there as 5th in the MVC. Theyre definitely not putting us even worse off than some of the MVC names they've put in.

Apparently someone just has faith in the MVC! Bigger question is what order they have the top 4 of the MVC in.
