CollegeHoops.net Top 144 countdown -- 2008-09

I dont think there was a more athletic player in the valley last year. Ruffin, Eldridge, P'Allen, etc etc could all jump out of the building... but Houston had some hops that I didnt think were possible. I think it was the Butler game (or another game that was on TV) when he jumped out of nowhere to block a shot. His head was even with the rim...

You're probably thinking of this tip-in of an alley-oop that was (seemingly) thrown way too high.

Sure is...

that play still amazes me.

I am not sure what is more impressive- how his head is even with the rim- or his feat being even with most guys waists- with his knees not even bent... truly unbelievable...

Anyone know what his official vertical was at DU???

Here is a YouTube video of a player named Michael Wilson, who played for the Harlem Globetrotters.
He was said to have had a vertical leap of 55 inches (I don't know if that's true), supposedly the biggest ever recorded. The video shows him dunking a basketball on a 12 foot rim.

wait just a minute...that is at best a "tip-dunk"...and I have even seen Brian Lavin do that (on a 10-ft rim), so it is quite a bit easier than a true "dunk" with the ball held in your hand and dunked over the rim.

I am still not convinced....
as one of the people at the Tailgate told me he witnessed Dodie Dunson dunk a ball with his elbow above the 10-ft rim, and Dodie confirmed he can do it.
That would mean Dodie would be able to get his hand about 12-ft and maybe do the same tip-dunk on a 12-ft basket!

That is insane. I would love to see Dodie do that in a game, hopefully within a few months...
of course whenever Ruffin went up it looked like he should have come down but just kept on going up! Some of these players can really jump high.

It's just amazing what some these athletes can do. I play ball with a couple of guys who played div. I volleyball and talk about hops. There's even this short guy 5' 8" who can hang on the rim. I'm lucky to touch the net. I have a vertical leap that can be measured by the width of a credit card.

New Mexico has made a comeback now that McKay is gone...and they fall at the #51 spot...

#51 New Mexico

McKay or Alford...who's the bigger scumbag? Hard to say really. My vote would probably still go with Alford for harboring a convicted felon and attempting to use the guise of a Christian Faith group to persuade the victim to drop the charges. Kinda hard to top that one (although Dave Bliss, ironically another guy with Lobo ties, was able to do so).

**Anthony Booker is described as "a superb scorer in the paint"...but in high school against opponents who are NOT ever going to be playing D-I he averaged 11.8ppg.
He averaged only 9 ppg as a junior.
When the voting was done for All Area players in the St. Louis area, wouldn't you think a top 50 player nationally would make first team all-area?
Nope...didn't make first, and didn't even make 2nd team All St. Louis-Area. And with 3 D-I players on the team shouldn't McCluer have won the state title?
(they didn't)

I have seen Booker play a few times. He was on a team with two other D1 players in Torres Roundtree (SIU) and Femi John (SLU). They were both guards who liked to shoot. Put Booker on most high school teams and he would have been a 20+ ppg scorer easily.

That said, I don't think SIU will be the 43rd best team in the country to start the year. If all of the newcomers gel, we could be better than that by the end of the year.

That means the Valley teams rank...

#24 Creighton
#43 SIU
#56 Drake
#64 Bradley
#82 Illinois State
#110 Indiana State
#134 Wichita State
#161 Nothern Iowa
#198 Evansville
#211 Missouri State

& LOOK AT WHO THEY HAVE LAST PLACE!!
#348 SIUE!

Looks like the Mid-Major Top 25 is falling behind schedule...as they didn't get their update by end of October.

I just had to come back and re-visit this ranking one time...

These guys picked University of San Diego at their #61 pick...
http://www.collegehoopsnet.com/200809-san-diego-basketball-preview-61-99043

and Charlotte as #62
http://www.collegehoopsnet.com/200809-charlotte-basketball-preview-62-98061

we are talking #61 & 62, better than almost all the Valley teams, better than
Bradley, btter than Illinois, better than Michigan, Washington State, Florida State...

well....I guess they missed on these guys...

San Diego is 4-5 with losses to San Jose State and SDSU, and wins over San Diego Christian (non-DI), CSU Bakersfield, Valpo...their RPI is 162!

Charlotte is 2-6, losses to Cal State Fullerton & 256 RPI Old Dominion, and an RPI of 228.
