Coaching Carousel

In a bit of a surprise North Carolina is going to hire former Denver Nuggets coach Michael Malone
Blue bloods are probably feeling the pressure, and I think their options are much narrower than they used to be in the days of NIL and capped revenue sharing. At least for now until things normalize. Many other schools have just as big or bigger budgets and revenue support, and they are taking a cut they never used to be able to.

Noticed these three hires:

UT Rio Grande Valley is hiring NC State assistant Brandon Chambers, who was with Will Wade at both McNeese and NC State.

Weber State hires Troy associate head coach Kaleb Canales, who started his collegiate coaching career with Scott Cross at UT Arlington in the mid-2000's before working in the NBA for 18 years, during which, in an interim spell with the Trailblazers, he became the first Hispanic head coach in NBA history. He rejoined Cross at Troy this year.

Reclassifying West Florida is hiring Appalachian State associate head coach Tanner Smith.

I'm not sure there is blue bloods anymore, think you need to figure out who the green bloods are.

Josh Schertz, who was reportedly offered the Kansas State job, instead returns to St. Louis with a hefty raise-

Robbie Avila and his coach at Indiana State and Saint Louis, Josh Schertz, have posted social media jabs at each other in jest. It was all just joking around as they are in fact very close. But a ton of people online, including Billikens fans, have gotten upset and even demanding the coach be fired. Read some of the replies to Avila's post here-

Kyle Green announced as new head coach at Northern Iowa
;;;;
He is the father of AJ Green, who played at UNI and is now in the NBA with the Bucks.
...
speaking of AJ Green with the Milwaukee Bucks....(salary is $11.25mil)
he had quite a night last night- setting al all time Bucks record, hitting 11 three-pointers.... in a 125-108 win over the Nets.
He started and played 41 minutes, was 11-16 from 3-pt range, scored 35 points and got an unexpected shower

Like a lot of teams who are far outside of the playoffs, the Bucks have been starting and playing lots of guys who
ordinarily don't start or play that much, prompting allegations they are "tanking" to get better odds for the draft.

(ps- don't ya think we need to start a new Coaching Carousel thread... I'm thinking this one has run its course since

UNI had 3 players signed in the early signing period-
Zavier Zens
Jordan Boyd
Will Gerdes
Another of Ben Jacobson's 2026 recruiting class had decommitted.

Zavier Zens, the top ranked player in Wisconsin, was released 2 weeks ago and has reportedly narrowed his choices to Utah State, Illinois, and Wisconsin
Will Gerdes, one of the top players in Iowa, remains signed and has not yet announced a decision about his commitment to UNI.
Jordan Boyd also signed with UNI early, but has been released and committed today to Utah State, where Ben Jacobson is now the head coach.

For anyone interested, here's an interesting interview with NIU's new head coach. It's quite in depth. The interview begins just after the 14 minute mark and goes for over an hour. Open the description to see the exact starting time. At one point he mentioned that, while at Northern Michigan, he recruited as if his team was in the Horizon. Now, he'll want to recruit as if NIU (first season in the Horizon) was in the MVC.

He also briefly mentions Coach Wardle.

MVC fans remember Mark Turgeon well. ......
This seems like a great hire for Kansas City. I am surprised Wichita State never brought him back after they got rid of Gregg Marshall.

Mark Turgeon to be hired by UMKC

In couple aritcles in Kansas City-
Mark Turgeon's salary is just $200K plus incentives, little more than half what the UNKC women's coach makes

but the interesting news is that the UMKC Men's Basketball team will play 15 of their home games in the downtown Kansas City
Municipal Arena (seating capacity 10,700). AND- get this - the are NOT CHARGING UMKC ANYTHING! In fact, the city is even putting up $650,000
of city funds to renovate and build suites to UMKC's discretion. - LINK

The past several years the team has played in their on-campus Swinney Arena (seating capacity 1,500), but their average home attendance
was just 702 this year and has been 900-1100 the past few years.

Lamar Head Coach Alvin Brooks is the next to be let go.... they lost 8 straight and finished 12-19
He is the father of former Bradley assistant coach Alvin Brooks III who is now an assistant at Kentucky.
Speaking of former Bradley assistant Alvin Brooks III, he just left Kentucky to take the top assistant spot at NC State
