Coaching Carousel

another unexpected firing...

IU Indy head coach Paul Corsaro was fired yesterday.

IU Indy is formerly IUPUI, and they hired Corsaro a year ago from DII Univ of Indianapolis where he was highly successful.
In his first year at IU Indy he posted a decent gain in a program that had been miserable for years, winning only an average
of 5.8 games per season of the prior five seasons.

However, four players transferred out and complained that they were treated poorly and subjected to abuse, which was defined as
intimidation, bullying and instilling fear.... dirty jokes, foul language, etc...
A couple more that transferred out (apparently smelling a settlement) joined in.... players he inherited from a horrible team that he did not recruit.
Specific details are slim but NOTHING even comes close to what we read about Gregg Marshall or Bobby Knight.
I guess it hints that kids nowadays are soft - they want to be treated like kings and given playing time without earning it.

One more note- a few years ago when Valpo was added to the MVC, IUPUI was one of the schools that was given consideration
of adding to the MVC. - LINK

With the sudden and unexpected firing of the IU Indy head coach, one of their players has entered the transfer portal. The portal is closed to ordinary transfers, but still open to players at programs where a coaching change occurs.
6'6" freshman Keenan Garner, who Bradley offered out of Fishers, Indiana HS entered the portal today-

As freshman, Garner started about half their games, and played 20 minutes per game. He averaged 5.3 points and 4.8 rebounds. Would Bradley be interested? I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up in the MVC.

IU Indy hires Division II head coach Ben Howlett from West Liberty University (W.Va.) to take over their basketball program.
Howlett replaces Paul Corsaro, who was fired May 13 for what the university said was his treatment of players during his only season with the Jaguars.
Howlett was 217-37 at West Liberty with eight straight Mountain East Conference regular-season titles and eight straight NCAA Tournament appearances. His 2023 team reached the Division II championship game. They averaged 100.2 points per game this past season and finished 30-5.

Keenan Garner signs with Central Michigan as part of their rebuild - they have 13 new players signed this spring.

Here's an unusual story - and there are rumors that there's more lurking beneath the surface....

The top assistant coach (actually, Associate Head Coach) at Stony Brook University, under head coach Geno Ford, Dan Rickard,
just "stepped down" and is taking a position as "athletic director" at a nearby high school. (a pretty massive step down)
The Stony Brook School is a private Christian High School with enrollment of 455.

This is a very odd time for a coach to suddenly depart, and there's rumors that barring a great season in 2025-26 (after an 8-24 season in 2024-25, Geno's 6th season there), the rest of the coaching staff will be gone by end of this coming season.
After 2023-24, Geno signed an extension through 2025-26, (at a little over $400K), so he's apparently on the last year of his contract.
Geno's DI head coaching record is 200-225. Former Bradley assistant Jaden Uken is now Geno's top assistant.

Stony Brook didn't waste any time removing Dan Ricard's page from their website-

Dan Rickard - Associate Head Coach - Staff Directory-

Dan Rickard is a Stony Brook alum who played for them from 2002-2004, then became a grad assistant, followed by various coaching positions under Geno Ford and previous coaches Jeff Boals and Steve Pikell going back more than 20 years. -
He has been Associate Head Coach since 2022-

It is a strange story.
