Bradley Adidas deal

Old Coach

New member
I know there is already a thread that covers this, "College Basketball Uniforms", but I think it isn't clear in what it's covering. I assumed that there would be greater interest and more discussion on this topic, since it's the first deal of its type for the athletic department.

Hasn't Bradley had several previous exclusive contracts with apparel and shoe companies? I know the basketball team has had several deals with Nike in the past.

I am sure it's good for all the other non-revenue producing athletic programs that usually don't get much from the apparel and shoe companies, but isn't such a deal detrimental to the only true revenue producing program, the basketball program?
There is a reason most schools negotiate these deals for their football and basketball teams separately from their other teams.

They should negotiate a nice coupon for the alumnus to buy Adidas.

I also bet you the soccer team is quite pleased over this deal. I usually buy Adidas when I can. For some reason their shoes fit me real well and they tend to last.

same here. the Adidas shoes I am wearing now I have had for maybe over 3 years (I usually only have 1-2 pairs of shoes too so I wear them all the time)...

Like I've said, if Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, and Notre Dame can make Adidas work, then I'm sure that Bradley can.

Bradley will soon be wearing Adidas uniforms. And today, Adidas just unveiled what the future of their college uniforms looks like.
What do you think? I think they look like 1980's Zubaz...yuck.
Note some of the comments below the article- mostly negative.

I wonder if Bradley will be wearing the ones with the sleeves? :)

Yahoo Sports calls them "Hideous"-

Remember these Zubaz pants? I think I had a few pair of these a couple decades ago. It looks like Adidas ripped off their design-

Those old pants were hideous and I'm not a fan if that new combination I'm seeing posted here. I do prefer Adidas over Nike, so I??™m looking forward to seeing what products the fans might have access to buy.

I thought I heard or read that all BU teams be Adidas by this fall with the exception of the basketball team. I thought they still had to honor Nike this fall before making the switch? Can anyone confirm this?

Yes, that is correct. The men's basketball team only will stay with Nike for 1 more year, then switch to Adidas in 2014.

These uniforms are being universally panned by media and just about everyone else.

Last I checked, the rules of basketball, written by former Kansas coach James Naismith, say nothing about wearing shorts that look like the ugliest pair of bathing trunks you saw on your last trip to the beach.

could it be that making our long term deal with adidas could yet be a mistake...
...check the headlines - lots of schools are quite unhappy and spending millions to get out of those deals and go with Nike..

Michigan's deal with adidas was/is the "most lucrative" such deal in all of college sports yet Michigan is still jettisoning their adidas deal for reasons that relate to their recent dropoff in athletic success...

The cited decisions all seem to be football driven. Bradley's decision to go with Adidas was partially driven by soccer.

Nike virtually "controls" much of the AAU programs - thus, like it not, does control where the kids might land in college.
FB is the biggie for most schools, and maybe the shoe affiliation won't matter but it is almost an endless talking point..

I recall this being the case with D. Rose coming out of high school. His AAU team was wearing Adidas, and many said that there was no way that he would end up at a Nike school, like Illinois. Sure enough, he ended up at an Adidas school in Memphis.

Indiana University just announced they will let their current deal with adidas expire..and will...
"explore" other options that are more "lucrative"

obviously programs with winning teams, that draw arenas full of fans and sell a lot of merchandise command the best deals....
I'd have to think our bargaining power has shrunk some over the past few years with declining success, attendance, and fan base....
but we're poised to make a comeback so maybe we can get in on the "lucrative"
