2016-17 Coaching Carousel

Here's a hiring that gonna get some real coverage for a while

Liberty was in the market hiring a new Athletic Director - you'd think there's be plenty of good candidates...but maybe not

They just hired the guy who stepped down at Baylor in the midst of the multiple rapes and sexual abuse cases & lawsuits going on that the Athletic Department was found involved for NOT reporting and for not holding the athletes accountable.
One of this guy's staff later even went just to jail! - LINK

Morehead State Head Coach Sean Woods resigned today.

Morehead State officials have scheduled a press conference for 4 PM (3 PM CST)

List growing....considering it's still very early in the season...

Drake - Ray Giacoletti steps down - Jeff Rutter is interim
George Washington - Mike Lonergan fired - Maurice Joseph interim
Morehead State - Sean Woods steps down - Preston Spradlin is interim
SMU - Larry Brown steps down - Tim Jankovich hired
Tennessee-Martin - Anthony Stewart was acting as Interim Coach - Anthony Stewart hired as permanent Head Coach

but--
Central Michigan is again having a good, solid season...
Ex-Drake head coach Keno Davis and Kevin Gamble have CMU at 8-3 but 5-0 at home and some solid wins as well as the #1 scorer in the nation Marcus Keene and have 40 wins over the past two seasons...

I have to think he & Gamble would love to be back in Iowa and betcha more than a few phone calls have been going back and forth from Iowa to Michigan!

another Bradley guy gets named head coach at the college level...and I am sure many won't even recall the name..

Indiana University-Kokomo (IU-K) is an NAIA school in Komomo, IN, their head coach just stepped down and their assistant, Alex Birge has been elevated to the head coaching spot (interim)

Alex Birge is a 2014 Bradley graduate who was basketball Student Assistant
Alex also played at Spoon River & Monmouth.

South Florida's Orlando Antigua is let go amid NCAA issues

Unconfirmed, but now there's rumors of USF buying out head coach Orlando Antigua to get the NCAA off their backs on this investigation

SMU - Larry Brown steps down - Tim Jankovich hired
Tennessee-Martin - Anthony Stewart was acting as Interim Coach - Anthony Stewart hired as permanent Head Coach
USF - Orlando Antigua let go - Murray Bartow named interim

lot of rumor that New Mexico head coach Craig Neal is on a very hot seat...
with UCLA assistant and former New Mexico assistant Duane Broussard's name being mentioned

how the tide turns so quickly...

just less than 2 years ago, NC State's Mark Gottfired was a hot name among DI coaches
He took a team to the Sweet Sixteen that nobody thought had a chance

Then a little over a year ago - he was rewarded with a big raise and extension - $2.5 mil per year thru 2020

...now they want him fired ASAP

when Drake's Ray Giacoletti stepped down, right away Jeff Rutter won six of their next ten games and lots were saying they should just give Rutter a long term contract...

Well- sentiment has changed..
Now Drake has lost seven in a row and are knocking on last place again.
The general thought in Des Moines can now better be described as let's look this over a bit first and see who might be available in March-April

Drake - Ray Giacoletti steps down - Jeff Rutter is interim
George Washington - Mike Lonergan fired - Maurice Joseph interim
Morehead State - Sean Woods steps down - Preston Spradlin is interim
NC State - Mark Gottfried fired
SMU - Larry Brown steps down - Tim Jankovich hired

Pete Thamal at Sports Illustrated says:
Prepare for Chaos: This year's coaching carousel will be the most active in years
http://www.si.com/college-basketball/2017/02/23/nc-state-indiana-coaching-carousel

...intriguing jobs like NC State and South Florida have already opened.
This projects to be a busier than normal year on the coaching carousel, as at least 35 jobs are expected to open from firings alone. As one industry source succinctly put it this week: “It’s going to be bananas.”

...vacancies at LSU, Missouri and Illinois have been considered forgone conclusions for months

A high volume of jobs also means reverberations from sitting head coaches leaving for other jobs, especially if projections are correct and multiple high-major coaches make later moves. Names like Indiana’s Tom Crean, Baylor’s Scott Drew, Cal’s Cuonzo Martin and Wichita’s Gregg Marshall have gained significant buzz. “There’s going to be a lot of trickle-down,”

Interesting read on which other big program coaches may get fired, and who might move up. There is no mention of the Missouri valley.
He projects Gregg Marshall and Dan Muller as potential candidates to replace John Groce at Illinois. He also thinks Indiana's Tom Crean could go, and maybe even Thad Matta.
He projects that Lorenzo Romar may be out at Washington. I doubt that will happen though, since Romar has the #1 player in the country signed for 2017 (Michael Porter, Jr.)

Speculation that Nebraska's Tim Miles could be out
https://nebraska.rivals.com/news/eichorst-responds-to-speculation-criticism-of-miles-job-status

Momentum building for the Illini to open the bank account and pay whatever it takes to get Gregg Marshall
...but talk also that NC State, Indiana and others will also be calling...
http://writingillini.com/2017/02/24/illinois-basketball-case-gregg-marshall-next-illini-head-coach/

There's talk that another deal like what the Illini gave to Lovie Smith might interest Marshall -
something like a 6-8 year deal for job security and maybe $4 million plus per year

also - you have to think Drake's nosedive down the stretch has mortally wounded Jeff Rutter's chance of being their coach next year...

Austin Peay's Dave Loos stepping down

Austin Peay - Dave Loos steps down
Drake - Ray Giacoletti steps down - Jeff Rutter is interim
George Washington - Mike Lonergan fired - Maurice Joseph interim
Morehead State - Sean Woods steps down - Preston Spradlin is interim
NC State - Mark Gottfried fired
SMU - Larry Brown steps down - Tim Jankovich hired
Tennessee-Martin - Anthony Stewart was acting as Interim Coach - Anthony Stewart hired as permanent Head Coach
