2016-17 Coaching Carousel

Seattle University fires Cameron Dollar, who I recall a few people praising and predicting how successful he would be there.

South Florida to hire Brian Gregory. He is a former assistant under Tom Izzo at Michigan State, and was head coach at Dayton and Georgia Tech. Georgia Tech fired him a year ago, and he has been a "consultant" to Tom Izzo for the past year.
Gregory was a candidate for the Bradley head coach job back in 2002, but pulled out of consideration when he sensed unusual motives and was asked racially charged questions by one of the search committee members.

catching up...

even more accurate than the ESPN Coaching Carousel - as they currently have an error - they have NC State hiring Grant McCasland!

South Florida to hire Brian Gregory......Gregory was a candidate for the Bradley head coach job back in 2002....

Speaking of former BU head coaching candidates from 2002....

Does anyone recall this incident?

........somewhere back in maybe 2003 - or - 2004...
in the middle of a game at the Civic Center...back when the Bradley bench was on the SOUTH end of the arena (the end that is now the visitors bench)

one of the 2002 coaching hire candidates's family members (I believe brother) - right smack dab in the middle of game action - came storming down the aisle that was behind the far end of the bench...
he obviously had been in the arena just for this purpose but likely nobody really recognized him... but it was later revealed that it was a BROTHER of one of the other candidates that did not get hired..

anyway - he came all the way down to the bottom of that aisle so he was standing only a couple feet behind the far end of the Bradley bench - and he started shouting things at Jim Les.

I couldn't hear what he was saying and probably nobody else really caught what he said...
but after several seconds he drew the attention of some fans and then the ushers came down and grabbed him and escorted him up and out of the arena -I later heard that he was expelled from Carver and told never to come back. it was reported by those nearby that he had shouted some very unpleasant insults.

Anyway - Les was in the middle of coaching the team at that time and yet heard the ruckus and turned briefly to see but quickly ignored the guy and went back to giving his full attention to the game as the ushers got him outta there.

There was even a very brief mention in the column the next day about the incident but they didn't mention who it was...

anyone else remember all this?

hmmm...seems odd........
he's never stayed anywhere more than 3 years without moving on...
I can understand the move from Missouri State to Tennessee...but the jump to Cal was not an obvious move up nor would the jump to Mizzou be..

I am not saying Cuonzo Martin is grossly overrated, but here are the facts-

In 3 seasons at Missouri State, he never made it to the NCAA Tournament, and had a record of 61-41 overall (.598 ), and a losing MVC record of 26-28 (.481)

Then in 3 seasons at Tennessee, he made it to one NCAA Tournament in 3 years. His 2013-14 team barely made it in and was in the First Four, with a roster that included at least 3 future NBA players who were all recruited and left over from Bruce Pearl. After that season, he resigned amid rumors he may get fired. Thousands of Tennessee fans had signed a petition calling for him to be fired and for Bruce Pearl to be re-hired since Pearl's "show cause" penalty was expiring. Martin's overall record was 63-41 (.606), and his SEC record was 32-20 (.615). His final 2 seasons at Tennessee he finished tied for 5th (2012-13) and 4th (2013-14).

And in 3 seasons at Cal, he has only 1 NCAA appearance in 2016. They were given a generous #4 seed, and were immediately upset and eliminated by a #13 seeded Hawaii team! His overall record at Cal is 62-39 (.614), and a mediocre Pac 12 record of 28-24 (.538 ).
This season (2016-17) he finished tied for 5th in the Pac 12 with a 10-8 record, and did not make the NCAA Tournament. Plus his #1 seeded Cal Bears team were just embarrassed and eliminated in the first round of the NIT by lowly #8 seeded Cal State Bakersfield!
Cal State Bakersfield lead wire to wire, built a 23 point halftime lead playing on Cal's home court, and coasted easily to the dominating win over Cuonzo Martin's team.

So with that resume, and only 2 NCAA appearances in 9 seasons, he is being offered $3+ million for 7 years to coach Missouri.

Here's the announcement - it's a biggie...
Cuonzo Martin has resigned at Cal and will take the Mizzou job for $3+ million per year times 5 or 7 years...
California will now begin a search...Jim Les' name has been mentioned..

His salary at Cal was complex with lots of different clauses but amounted to about $2 mil per year..
at Cal he has recruited NBA talent...

NBCSports writer is saying Cuonzo's deal is guaranteed 5 years but additional years (up to 7 total) added for each time he reaches 20 wins

catching up again...

Missouri has offered their head coaching job to Cal's Cuonzo Martin. He was also said to be a possible consideration for Illinois.

Reportedly, Cuonzo Martin will hire Michael Porter, Sr. as an assistant coach at Missouri. Michael Porter Sr. was recently hired at washington by Lorenzo Romar, who was just fired. His son, Michael Porter, Jr. is the #1 ranked player in the high school class of 2017, and although he verbally committed to Washington, he never signed a NLI. So Cuonzo is already making smart moves that will help insure his success at Missouri.

Cleveland State - Gary Waters steps down -....

Here's something that may be of interest to Bradley fans...

The Cleveland State position is open and one of the candidates mentioned for the spot
is Stony Brook's coach Jeff Boals...
If Boals is hired, his current assistant coach is Geno Ford. and quite possibly, since Geno knows Ohio better than he knows New York, then Geno would go with Boals to Cleveland State (Cleveland State is also where Jim Les started as a player)

But even more Bradley connection...the top spot in the Cleveland State Athletic Department was open as John Parry announced he would retire last fall..
The process of hiring a new AD had been moving slowly
https://www.campuspressbox.com/2017/odd-lack-intrigue-cleveland-state-athletic-director-search/

Their former AD - now the AD at Georgetown, Lee Reed - is not interested in returning to CSU, but then they hired the guy Illinois just fired with all their issues & scandals, Mike Thomas!
Reed played on the same basketball team with Jim Les back in the 80's, and is a friend of Jim Les.
http://www.cleveland.com/pluto/index.ssf/2017/03/cleveland_state_scribbles_thre.html

however it was mentioned that one of the other candidates who was not chosen was Virnette House Browning, who is in the Athletic Dept. at CSU and was once the acting AD at Bradley, and was brought in here by KK, but left after Cross was hired.
