2016-17 Coaching Carousel

that didn't take long...
Brand new ISU assistant DeAndre Haynes gets hired away and is going to Michigan under John Beilein- LINK

wow - Michigan head coach John Beilein hires ANOTHER ISU assistant -
Luke Yaklich is pegged to follow Haynes to Michigan
https://www.maizenbrew.com/2017/7/2...t-coaching-void-with-luke-yaklich-per-reports

That leaves TWO open assistant slots at ISU right at the crucial recruiting period in the recruiting calendar...
it's also the third assistant under Muller who has left in the past few months....

New head coaching opening in Division I- San Jose State Head Coach Dave Wojcik suddenly resigns-
http://www.sjsuspartans.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/071017aaa.html

Their athletic director announced, "We will immediately start the process of conducting a national search to find a replacement for Coach Wojcik."

Also, "assistant coach Rodney Tention will serve as the team's interim head coach until the next head coach is appointed."

The only open D1 coaching position is about to be filled. San Jose State is planning to hire Colorado assistant Jean Prioleau to replace Dave Wojcik, who resigned 3?? weeks ago-

Illinois State's Dan Muller will hire East Tennessee State's Brian Collins as an assistant coach, per a source.

tough spot for Muller to spend much of his summer interviewing and hiring...
and having his main recruiters up and leave while their top recruiting targets are right in the middle of their decisions......
Brian Collins has strong juco connections - and when you look at the East Tennessee roster- they have SEVEN juco kids - a couple of which Bradley had recruited.... plus they've landed a lot of DI transfers (Tevin Glass, Hanner Perea, Peter Jurkin (from South Sudan), Deuce Bello, Ge-Lawn Guyn, Obi-Rapu..)
Wonder if that's how ISU's roster will look in the future..

Nice to know your assistants are in demand and moving on to better things with a recommendation from your boss.

it definitely is a nice thing for the ISU program to have two guys moving up to the Big Ten...
now....is Muller hoping to be next??

Cuonzo Martin plays his cards well at Missouri. Hired Michael Porter, Sr. as an assistant coach, and the next day, Michael Porter, Jr., the top ranked prospect in the class of 2017 commits to Missouri.
http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/18995284

Missouri just got a little better. New Missouri head coach Cuonzo Martin hired former Washington assistant Michael Porter as an assistant and immediately the assistant's son Michael Porter, Jr., who was the #1 recruit in the country for 2017, decommitted from Washington and committed to Missouri. Now the younger brother, Jontay Porter, who was one of the tip recruits for 2018 has reclassified as a 2017 recruit and will also join the Missouri team.

DePaul head coach Dave Leitao makes a big move in his coaching staff..

long time assistant Billy Garret, who has been Assistant Coach there at DePaul since 2009 was "demoted" from coaching assistant to the position of (non-coaching) Director of Basketball Operations.

Leitao then hired Tim Anderson to fill the assistant coaching spot....but no word where Rick Carter and Bryan Tibaldi are going - they have been dropped from the coaching staff director

Don't worry T, your really gonna like who ISU is bringing in as assistant:!:
Great - must be someone from the Jim Les (or Mo) Coaching tree - Eric Buescher? Dodie Dunson?? Jud? (except he just was hired by Marquette)

Any word on Deontae Hawkins and what he's up to - missed a couple court dates and has some warrants out for him - has he cut out of town like Quintin Brewer did so they couldn't find him?

Northern Illinois plays at Marquette this coming season. Judson will be coaching against his former team.

Just a little more than a week ago, Rob was hired by Marquette head coach Steve Wojciechowski.

His position at Marquette is "Special Assistant to the Head Coach", whatever that is. However, it is not a coaching position, so technically if he stays at Marquette, he won't be "coaching" against anyone.

But, I have heard rumors that he is being considered for the open assistant coaching spot at ISU.

To fill the open slot as Basketball Assistant at ISU...ISU will hire Brendan Mullins away from UIC...
Brendan Mullins is the son of the head of the Illinois Wolves AAU program and brother to past SIU star Bryan Mullins
*

SIU has promoted their Director of Basketball Operations Justin Walker to fill their open Assistant Coaching spot
one of their other assistants had a recent accident in which he was issued a DUI that was never made public, and a court date later this month..Hmmm...

ex-ISU assistants Yaklich & Haynes did well for themselves....

MOST midmajor assistants are making $80-100K and contracts are generally year to year...

BUT at Michigan they will almost triple their salary (Yaklich $225K plus bonuses) and get TWO YEAR guarantees and have the possibility of $30-50K more in bonuses

Dee Brown was hired initially at University of Illinois in a new, creative position called "Special assistant to (then) Athletic Director Mike Thomas". He then transitioned to his role on the staff of John Groce at Illinois in a newly-invented position called "Director of Player Development and Alumni Relations" earning $200,000 per year - almost triple what most full time DI coaching assistants make.
He even described his job duties and it sounded an awful lot like just greeting Illini basketball recruits when they came to campus (his position did not allow him to coach or recruit off-campus) and make them feel comfortable.

Then suddenly resigned just five months later, right at the beginning of the 2016-17 basketball season, "for personal reasons" - very strange that he would just walk away from a $200,000K stepping stone job into the coaching profession he had always said was his dream. It still remains a mystery and out of respect for his claim that the reasons were personal, nobody has ever pursued them or published why.
