2016-17 Coaching Carousel

Presbyterian College, one of the few remaining schools with a head coaching vacancy hires Dustin Kerns as their new head coach-
http://www.gobluehose.com/ViewArtic...47&DB_LANG=C&ATCLID=211604591&DB_OEM_ID=18100

He was previously the associate head coach at Wofford.

Also, Robert McCullum was hired last week to take over at Florida A&M.

There now appears to be only one coaching job still open- Grambling State. Their head coach Shawn Walker was fired March 22.

An article dated May 5 said that Grambling had narrowed their search to 2 finalists-

And on May 12, 2017, an article said Grambling was going to hire Donte Jackson, the former head coach at Stillman College in Alabama (Divisio I of NAIA), as their new head coach.

Yesterday, the Grambling website still showed Shawn Walker as their head basketball coach, even though he was fired way back on March 22.
Today, they have removed him from the coaches web page, but they still show all his assistant coaches listed, and they do not show anyone replacing him as their head coach.
http://www.gsutigers.com/roster.aspx?path=mbball#sidearm-roster-coaches

Very strange situation at Grambling, but it seems few people there care. Their average attendance is always at the bottom of Division I at barely 500 per game.

They were recently hit with some severe NCAA penalties for their low APR and academic deficiencies, and this has been a recurring problem for Grambling.
http://www.thenewsstar.com/story/sp...three-programs-hit-postseason-bans/101519898/

There are officially now 2 Division I programs with head coaching vacancies.

Butler just lost their head coach Chris Holtman who left to take the Ohio State job. So far, there is no official word, and no good rumors on what they plan to do.
Note that Holtman was an assistant at Butler when he replaced Brandon Miller in 2014, and Brandon Miller had been assistant at Butler a few years earlier previously when he was selected to replaced Brad Stevens in 2013, and Stevens was an assistant at Butler when he replaced Todd Licklighter in 2007, and Licklighter was an assistant at Butler when he replaced Thad Matta in 2001, and Matta was an assistant at Butler when he replaced the previous coach Barry Collier in 2000. You have to go all the way back to when Collier replaced Joe Sexton in 1989 to find the last time Butler hired someone completely from outside their program and who had not previously been an assistant at Butler (Collier was an assistant at Stanford when he was hired by Butler in 1989).
The current Butler assistant coaches are:
Terry Johnson, who has been an assistant coach at Butler for the past 11 seasons under Chris Holtman, Brandon Miller, and Brad Stevens.
Ryan Pedon, who has been an assistant coach for just the past 3 seasons under Chris Holtman. He worked under John Groce at Illinois prior to that.
Mike Schrage, who has been an assistant coach at Butler for the past 2 seasons under Chris Holtman, but he is an Indiana native and may have the most coaching experience of the 3 assistants having spent the past 23 years working on D1 basketball staffs such as Indiana, Mississippi, Duke, and Stanford before coming to Butler. He was a student manager at Indiana (1994-1998 ) under Bobby Knight. He was a staff member under Coach Mike Krzyzewski at Duke for 9 years (1999-2008 ), and he was an assistant coach at Stanford for 8 seasons under Johnny Dawkins.
So if Butler hires from within, it could be Terry Johnson, Ryan Pedon, or Mike Schrage.

Then there remains the strange case of Grambling State. They fired their previous head coach Shawn Walker on March 22. They completed a search, and on May 12 it was reported by a local newspaper that they had selected Donte Jackson, the former head coach at Stillman College in Alabama (NAIA) as their new head coach. However, no official announcement has ever been made, and their basketball website still does not show a head coach, though it still shows all 3 of their assistant coaches from fired coach Shawn Walker's staff.

One other note- CBSSports writer Matt Norlander wrote this column today about who Butler should hire. There are some interesting names-
http://www.cbssports.com/college-ba...tmann-off-to-ohio-state-who-will-replace-him/

One of his names is:
Illinois State coach Dan Muller: If you want to go outside the family and hire a current coach who would certainly take the job, this is your guy. Muller, 41, is 104-65 in four seasons at Illinois State. It's only a matter of time before Muller takes a bigger job. For Muller, who loves Illinois State, this would be an easier call than in previous situations, as the Redbirds will be good next season but losing big pieces from last season.

For the record, I think this is an extreme longshot. I can see why they might have Dan Muller on their radar, and he is an Indiana guy, though ISU is his only head coaching experience. But I believe they would have several other guys ahead of him on any list, and that means a bunch of people would have to turn them down before they would get to Muller. IMO, that is not likely to happen.

Despite Grambling never officially posting that their men's basketball head coaching position was filled, apparently Donte Jackson will take over on July 1. It's not clear why they had to wait until July 1, since they have been without a head coach since firing Shawn Walker back on March 22.
The Shreveport Times Newspaper filed this article about their new coach Donte Jackson-
http://www.shreveporttimes.com/stor...1/jackson-sees-potential-gsu-hoops/102370466/

The Grambling website still doesn't show the new coach, and only shows the previous assistants.
But one of those assistants, Kenyan Alston has already been hired as the AD at NAIA Stillman University.

It's rumored that Butler's leading candidate to replace Chris Holtman is former player LaVall Jordan. He has been the head coach at Wisconsin-Milwaukee for the past 1 year. He has been an assistant at Butler, Iowa, and Michigan.
Other sources are saying there are still 4 finalists- LaVall Jordan, Micah Shrewsberry (former Butler assistant under Brad Stevens and now an assistant with the Celtics), Terry Johnson (current Butler assistant), and Ryan Pedon (current Butler assistant).

LaVall Jordan has a past Bradley connection. He and Willie Scott were the 2 finalists to replace Alvin Brooks III for an assistant coaching position at Bradley back in 2010. Willie got the job.

There are reports that LaVall Jordan will become the next Butler head coach.

That leaves Wisconsin-Milwaukee as the only D1 school now without a head coach. Note that UW-Milwaukee was a finalist to be added to the Missouri Valley Conference last month, and remains an option for expansion in the near future.

LaVall Jordan's record at Wisconsin-Milwaukee last year was a woefully bad 11-24 overall and 4-14 and 10th place (last) in the Horizon league, his only season as a head coach anywhere. That has to be one of the worst head coaching records ever by a coach being hired at a major program like Butler, or at any D1 school. But even though Jordan's record last season at UW-M was very disappointing, that one year record does not reflect his recruiting or coaching ability very well.

For the 11 years before LaVall Jordan was hired, UW-M was coached by Rob Jeter, who was a leading candidate for Bradley's open coaching position in 2011. His record in his final season at UW-Milwaukee was 20-13, and 10-8 in the Horizon League. Many UW-M fans were upset that their unpopular AD Amanda Braun fired their well-liked, 20-win head coach and it lead to a complete rebuild. Jeter had won 21 games in 2013-14 and won the Horizon League Tournament, got an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and won their first round game before being eliminated in the 2nd round. Jeter also coached UW-M to an NCAA bid in 2005-06. He had 7 winning seasons out of his 11 years at UW-M, and his overall record was 184-170, and he was 112-87 in the Horizon league. It will be interesting to see who she hires now to replace LaVall Jordan.

Milwaukee hires Pat Baldwin, Northwestern asst
...btw, Pat Baldwin's son could have well been the #1 player in the IL Class of 2021 but will now probably be in school in the Milwaukee area..
The Sun Times actually has the rising freshman at #1 regardless of class! - LINK
