Combining the previous information about Shayok Shayok into one thread.

Shayok Shayok is originally from Ontario, Canada. He moved to Chicago and planned to attend Chicago Julian High School in late 2009. Because Coach Les is a friend of Loren Jackson, who was the Chicago Julian High School basketball coach at that time, Bradley became involved in his recruiting. Shayok Shayok played at a couple AAU events with the Julian team, but I can't find that he ever was eligible to play on the high school team. Loren Jackson left Julian High School early in 2010, and has since taken a job at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Several of Jackson's players from julian transferred to the IMG Academy, includin Shayok Shayok, Phillip Greene, and Jamari Traylor. Bradley was involved recruiting all 3. Greene committed to St. John's. Traylor reportedly has offers from Kansas, Indiana, Minnesota, St. John's, and Virginia Tech, but there may be academic issues. Shayok Shayok is still uncommitted.

Geno Ford picked up on his recruiting and Shayok Shayok made a campus visit the weekend of April 15-17.

He is described in internet reports as anywhere from 6'5" to 6'9". However, one of our staff measured him while in Florida to look at the IMG kids, and said he was 6'8".

He is described as a slender, skilled forward who shoots and handles the ball well. But because of the multiple transfers and prep schools, could there be issues with the NCAA eligibility?

Shayok gave a recent interview and said...

"I am from Ottawa, Canada, but attended my senior year of high school in Chicago.
“I decided to come to IMG to get stronger physically, work on my skills, and become an overall better basketball player.”

“My favorite player all time is Michael Jordan, and my favorite players right now are Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett.
.....schools that are currently interested in me are Bradley, Valparaiso, Detroit, Tulane, and Tennessee Chattanooga."

nice to see he named Bradley first ..and he noted his Bradley offer as far back as early last fall...

was the word on shayok that he was not making a decision for a little bit and taking more visits?

Yes, but Bradley is still recruiting Shayok Shayok, and he is still very much a possibility for the last available 2011 scholarship. With only 1 scholarship left, Bradley needs to be as discerning as possible who they sign.

Breaking news- Shayok Shayok has decided to commit to Bradley. No announcement will be made until his NLI arrives. Welcome to Bradley Shayok! Fans will love this kid!

Glad to have him at BU, you will be very happy playing here as Bradley fans are as good as any in the country when it comes to supporting the team.

Good pick-up by the staff.....very excited about his game plus it gives Walter a buddy from chi-town! :D

Judging by my avatar.....I'd say this was a pretty good recruiting visit when you land both players from one week-end!

I've talked to someone who has seen Shayok Shayok play. He is just 18 years old, and may still be growing. His skills are also still developing. He is a pretty good shooter, but will get better. He is tremendously athletic, and will hopefully develop into a similar player to Mamadou Seck.

Here are some of the better links for info about Shayok Shayok- many fans here might have seen some of these from the thread we have had on the recruiting board for some time-

Shayok Shayok was born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario. His parents are from Africa. He played at St. Patrick HS in Ottawa, then transferred to Julian HS in Chicago. He had problems with eligibility there and his play was limited. He was going to play at the Boys to Men Academy that was run by Loren Jackson his former coach at Julian, but they closed down the program. He transferred to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida this past year, and averaged 18 ppg and 10 rpg playing against some of the top prep school competetion in the country..

His younger brother is also a fine player. He still plays for St. Patrick's HS in Ottawa, Ontario (Shayok Shayok's high school), and is a very high scoring guard.
Marial Shayok- class of 2013-

He is the #1 ranked 2013 shooting guard among high school players in Canada-

Hopefully Geno can talk Jerome Robinson and James Gillingham into taking a nice little trip over to visit Young Shayok. Possibly to discuss the merits of Canadian guards attending Bradley University;)

Shayok Shayok is the first player Bradley has ever had from the Ottawa, Ontario area. But they have had a total of 6 Canadians play for them in their history (unless I am missing someone).

Since you mentioned 2 of them, James Gillingham and Jerome Robinson, I'll ask these couple trivia questions that check the memory of Bradley fans-

Who was the most recent Canadian to play at Bradley?

Who was the first Canadian player recruited to Bradley?

Can anyone name the other Canadians beside Jerome Robinson, James Gillingham, and the 2 players above?

Most recent: David Collins

Bingo. David Collins came to Bradley from Missouri State-West Plains Community College in Missouri, but he grew up in Toronto, and prepped at Emery Collegiate Institute in Toronto. In 2004 he helped lead his team to the Ontario 3AAA championship. At West Plains CC he averaged 8.5 ppg and 6.9 rpg his sophomore season (2006-2007). He was Jim Les' only Canadian recruit and played from 2007-2009. He just finished his season playing in Europe for ENAD, a professional team in Cyprus.
His team finished out of the playoffs, but David had a good year averaging 9.8 ppg, 6.6 rpg, and 1.8 blocks per game.

Canadians:
(I count seven total)
Shayok Shayok
David Collins
James Gillingham
Jason Faulknor
Jerome Robinson
Stevan Marcetic
Dan Secli

Correction. There have been 6 Canadians who have played for Bradley:
Dan Secli was a Dick Versace recruit. He came in 1979 but redshirted his first season due to a serious knee injury he suffered in a high school all star game. He played in 1 game in 1980, reinjured his knee, and retired from competetive basketball.

Stevan Marcetic played from 2002-2003
Jerome Robinson played from 1997-2001
Jason Faulknor played from 2000-2004
James Gillingham played from 2000-2004
David Collins played from 2007-2009

All were from the Toronto area (Guelph is about 60 miles from Toronto), and all except Collins and Secli were Jim Molinari recruits.
