Transfer portal news

In business contracts, those stipulations are called "restrictive covenants". In some cases, restrictive covenants have been ruled by courts as non-binding, because they restrict an employees' freedom to leave and earn a living elsewhere. But there have been other cases where they are upheld and considered legal, especially if the knowledge the employee has gained at a company, like confidential business secrets, could cause extreme harm to that company, and unfairly benefit a competitor. I don't know how a court would look at such restrictive college NIL contracts. But, if they happen, it will surely lead to more lawsuits.

Maybe the restrictions can be worded in a way similar to a no compete clause when some leaves a company

A year ago, the Federal Trade Commission essentially banned non-compete clauses in business contracts - https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2024/04/ftc-announces-rule-banning-noncompetes

It was appealed, but the ban was upheld by a Federal judge- https://www.littler.com/publication...al-court-declines-block-ftcs-non-compete-rule

...but then, last fall, a second judge issued an injunction against the FTC enforcing the ban. So the battle continues over whether non-compete clauses are legal. - https://www.reuters.com/markets/us/...-ban-worker-noncompete-agreements-2024-08-15/

Wasn't Bradley the first school to offer & contact him? We know it's a huge Longshot, but you have to hope Bradley has contacted him! I mean we discovered him when he wasn't known by anyone! He should have at least given us the courtesy of a visit! We have nothing to lose by staying in contact! Who knows, with everyone transferring each year, maybe we could snag him for a year within the next 3 years!!!!! It's a crazy portal that Coach Wardle may get lucky and land a huge get!

There are reports that Bidunga was getting $500,000 NIL money at Kansas. But the going rate for a 5-star center now is around $1 million per year. So the reports are that he doesn't necessarily want to leave Kansas, but has entered the portal to force Kansas (or another school) to bid his NIL number higher.

Thanks Coach for explaining that to me! Now I'm thinking at least some players enter the Portal for the same reason Bidunga Did! It will be interesting which players come back to their old team! I know Bidunga probably forgot about Bradley and we don't stand a chance.

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. A lot of players/agents are saying player X wants 1 mil or 2 mil but that is a long way from getting that much. Take Iowa - there are reports out there that their NIL budget for basketball was 1.5 mil. If you give one kid 1 mil you have 500 k to dole out to the other 12 players-about 40 k per player. I just don’t believe the pile of money is quite as large as some think. Now a bunch of other schools will have much bigger NIL budgets than Iowa-but not everybody.
Don’t get me wrong a few kids will get that much but I don’t think many will. I may be wrong but that is my sense.

I agree, I saw where Indiana had the largest amount of money in the Big Ten last year and it was said to be 5 million. I think these agents are the ones asking for these huge amounts and you are right in saying that if one player takes over 50% of that pile then there will not be much to give to the rest of the team.

I saw a huge list of guys that played high school in Illinois that are in the portal. Might have a chance there if they are looking to play close to home.

Copper Koch stays at Iowa, McCollum beats Bradley again.

I get it, but it really can't be called a recruiting loss when a mid-major like Bradley, with a few thousand NIL dollars a month to offer is matched against a Big Ten team with millions. Most likely, Koch never really intended to leave, but wanted to use the portal to get a more favorable NIL deal from the Iowa backers.

Non-Power Conference schools like Bradley will never be able to compete with the huge money those big schools can offer.
The situations at schools like Valpo and Evansville are the more common cases of smaller, private schools trying to build a successful program. That could be Bradley if not for a great coaching staff and a very good mid-major NIL program. Even the moderate sized public schools like Illinois State, Indiana State, SIU etc., should have an advantage over the private schools, but even they struggle to build a winning team and keep the better players from hitting the transfer portal for more money. And that difference will keep getting wider.

Every recent NCAA rule change favors the big guys. Now they allow 15 scholarships, which takes more talent away from the mid-majors. The NET kills the mid-majors' at-large chances and with it, millions in revenue. The NCAA decides they will not police NIL money, so watch the big football schools find endless millions more to pump into players' pockets. The transfer portal and immediate eligibility had already turned the mid-majors into farm teams, and it will keep getting worse.
I think Bradley has done a remarkable job, considering the huge obstacles that now exist in recruiting, NIL, TV deals, declining attendance, getting NCAA bids, etc.

Does anyone want to guess who the top teams will be in the MVC for 2025-26?

Will be interesting to see where Fliory Bidunga goes but my bet is Indiana. Large NIL fund, he went to Kokomo high, played for Indiana Elite which is run by Drew Adams father, Drew was hired by Devries……if Connor gets another year will he end up there ?

yes, Drake's had a more successful run the past few years, but no other MVC team has had a better run since Covid than Bradley has, and I kind of think if we can return Jaquan, Burch, Meta, & Thomas, plus add the three talented freshman guards - all it will take is to land 1 or 2 solid pieces from the portal and we ought to have a good chance to be pegged near the top of the MVC again in 2025-26.

Who else will get votes at the top of the MVC? Once again, every MVC team loses a LOT.
Some might pick Drake again but they caught lightning in a bottle last year - can it happen again with a full rebuild?
UNI returns most of their guys but they do lose the one guy who carried them all season (Tytan) plus another guy who was their 2nd best scorer & rebounder (Hutson) and their best sub of late (Cael Schmitt).
ISU should be solid but were .500 in the MVC this year so they need to make a big jump, Belmont loses Pierre, Whitt, Peebles & Walker - pretty much their whole starting lineup - and almost everyone else is in rebuild mode.

Let's hear some way too early guesses as to how the preseason MVC poll will look...

I will take a guess...altho seven months ahead in which every team will be adding players
from the portal, DII, juco, overseas, and elsewhere will definitely change my opinion by the start of the 2025-26 season

ISU
BU
UNI
Drake
Belmont
Murray State
SIU
Indiana State
UIC
Evansville
Valpo
and dead last with zero votes would be Missouri State if they decide to backtrack and NOT leave the MVC ;)

Yeah McCollum with the recruiting victory was a joke.
