Coaching Carousel

Judging by the last several DePaul coaching hires, they will blow this one again and pick somebody cheap or for some ridiculous reason, and they will be destined to fail.

Lol no doubt. Also Wardle has already been through a complete rehabilitation and rebuild at Bradley, I doubt he is looking for another opportunity to do that job, especially in the current environment with the transfer portal and NIL. It would either be a dream school or a big jump up to a stable program for Wardle imo.

I'd actually argue that's exactly why he would take the role. Besides the obvious conference upgrade, he's done this kind of thing before and he has the blueprint for it. I also think that it's probably easier to turn a program around in a shorter amount of time now with the NIL and Transfer Portal. Not saying he would, but IF he bolted for DePaul he could take his recruits with him, along with his returning players, and anyone in the Transfer Portal that is looking for a new destination.

I don't have the same opinion. If NIL was going to make a difference at DePaul, why hasn't it already? Nothing has changed there. There is something there that is almost an aversion to talented players. I just don't know that it is truly possible to correct that program, unless the entire athletic department is cleaned top to bottom, a true clean sweep occurs, and somehow a new amazing connection to the Chicago AAU scene is established etc.

Love the debate - here's my take on the NIL, it's a situation where a program hasn't been to the NCAA Tournament since 2004, and hasn't been to the NIT since 2007. That's 17 years of horrible basketball. Hard to get people to invest both time/money for a program that is a special level of horrible.

As far as Chicago AAU scene, I don't think that's as important. The best players from Chicago never stayed here to play at DePaul, they always go to blue blood programs. Dee Brown (U of I), Shannon Brown (MSU), Julian Wright (KU), Derrick Rose (Memphis), Jabari Parker and Jahlil Okafor (Duke). That likely wouldn't change, but to in my opinion, to say NIL wouldn't improve for a school that doesn't have a football program with a better product on the court isn't correct.

It's been awhile, but Mark Aguirre and Terry Cummings were 2 great players from the Chicago Public schools that played at DePaul. Dave Corzine and Joe Ponsetto were 2 good players from the Chicago suburbs that stayed home and played for the Blue Demons. I do get your point though.

...They also lost a couple other key players in the last 2 or 3 years who would have really helped Valpo...
Javon Freeman-Liberty, who was a 1st team All-MVC player, and became DePaul's leading scorer and an All-Big East player....

Former Valparaiso and DePaul star Javon Freeman-Liberty, who is averaging 23.8 points, 6.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists for the G-League team, the Raptors 905 has been signed to a standard NBA contract. He had been on a 2-way contract.- https://www.si.com/nba/raptors/news...rd-contract-following-stellar-g-league-season

Prob no surprise but hearing that barring an amazing run from the 9-seed spot, that the MVC will have an opening - and that the name Cuonzo will come up

Another name you might hear for the Missouri State job when Dana Ford is let go is Corey Gipson. He was an assistant at Missouri State under Paul Lusk and Dana Ford from 2015-2022. He left in 2022 to take the Northwestern State job in Louisiana, and a lot of people think his leaving after their successful 2021-22 season had a lot to do with the huge drop-off the next season. At Northwestern State, he took over a bad 9-23 team, and immediately turned them into a winner. He went 22-13 on his only year there. Then this year, he took over a 9-22 Austin Peay program that finished dead last in the ASUN last year. And again, he immediately turned them into a winner. They are 18-14 this season, 10-6 in the ASUN conference, They have won 8 of their last 9 games, and tonight they won and advanced to the semi-finals of the ASUN Tournament. He's impressed a lot of people with his coaching, recruiting, and his ability to immediately turn around bad programs.
He is a graduate of Austin Peay and a former assistant there, so it might be hard to lure him away. But the MVC would be a bit of a step up.

Could get interesting with more Valley coaches than we think this weekend. There might be fire and under more coaching seats in STL this weekend than we realize. Will someone else get burned?
