Chris Lowery is currently an assistant coach at Northwestern under Chris Collins. He is credited with helping to turn Northwestern into a Big Ten contender, and an NCAA team. He played at SIU, and is a native of Evansville, Indiana.

Prior to this season, he spent 10 seasons as an assistant under Bruce Weber at Kansas State. His first head coaching job was at Southern Illinois in 2004 when Bruce Weber left for Illinois and Matt Painter left for Purdue in successive years. He had 3 good seasons and NCAA bids in 2004-05, 2005-06, and 2006-07 mainly with very good players he inherited from Weber and Painter. But then his fortunes changed. He never managed to recruit enough talent after the Weber/Painter players left, he ended up with 4 losing seasons in a row, and his coaching came under fire by fans. In his final 4 seasons, he averaged 19 losses per season. He was replaced by Barry Hinson in 2012, and they have never won any conference or tournament titles, nor gotten back to the NCAA in the 16 seasons since 2007.

Many Valpo fans were hoping for Roger Powell, former Illinois star, and current assistant at Gonzaga. Powell's first coaching job was as an assistant coach at Valparaiso from 2011-2016 under Bryce Drew. He moved to Vanderbilt when they hire Drew away, and was his Associate Head Coach from 2016-19, then when Drew was fired by Vanderbilt, Powell was hired by Mark Few as an assistant.
Other names mentioned as possible finalists are De Andre Haynes, assistant coach at Marquette, JR Blount, assistant coach at Iowa State and former Loyola player, and Brad Korn, head coach at SEMO, and also a former assistant and player under Bruce Weber.

I haven't followed Powell since the 04'-05' season at IL, but he was a favorite of mine. Definitely seemed like a character man that would do well in life. Seems he has so far. Would be an interesting coach in the MVC imo.

I have to think Valparaiso would have contacted him. The fact that his name is not being mentioned now as a candidate, makes me wonder if he said no. Valpo would be a tough rebuild, and they are also the lowest paid position in the Valley. Powell could be earning more at Gonzaga.

I guarantee Roger is holding out for the right P5 job.
 
Jake Diebler is an interesting name. That is the first I've seen him mentioned as a candidate, but he seems like a good option. He played 4 years at Valparaiso (2005-09) under Homer Drew, then spent a year as a student assistant, a year as DBO, then a couple years as an assistant coach under Bryce Drew. Since leaving Valpo, he's been an assistant at Vanderbilt and Ohio State, and this year was elevated to Associate Head Coach under Chris Holtman.

DeAndre Haynes is an assistant coach at Marquette, where he's been for the past 2 seasons. He played at Maryland, is a native of Detroit, and does not appear to have any previous connection to Valparaiso.

There are strong rumors that Valparaiso will make their announcement today (Thursday, 4/6).
Chris Lowery seems to be the most popular name being reported, but not all are in agreement.
One or more of the others on that list night, also be ready to name a coach.

I think most of those names are speculation. Multiple reports suggest that it is Roger Powell's job if he wants it. Others being considered include Jake Diebler, DeAndre Haynes, and Greg Tonagel.

I think the cause for the delay is that their top choices have all been turning down the job.

Southern Utah hires Western Illinois head coach Rob Jeter. He replaces Todd Simon, who was hired away by Bowling Green.

Jeter has been at WIU for 3 seasons. He took over a program that went 5-21 the previous year, and has improved the record each year. This past season, WIU was 16-14, their first overall winning record since 2012-13 under Jim Molinari. They were 9-9 in the Summit League, their first non-losing league record also since 2012-13.

It will be interesting to see what WIU does. Will they elevate Chad Boudreau, the Associate Head Coach there. Or will they hire someone from outside?
