Assistant Coach Brian Jones leaves BU

Interesting. Not too concerning imo since Brian was only here for one year. Hopefully Wardle can fill the position with a solid hire before too long.

I think he'll be missed on the game scout side of things.

Yes, it is not a coincidence that the 2022-23 team did very well with Coach Jones on the staff. He is a very good X's and O's coach.
From what I have heard, he was not involved so much with recruiting. I don't know what the reasons were for him leaving, but he joins the staff of a well-regarded young coach at ETSU. Good luck Coach Jones.

I agree Brian did seem like a
good X /O coach. I always viewed Drew as our lead recruiter and replacing him with Brian Jones seemed like it left a recruiting void although we seem to have done a pretty good job recruiting this year.

Strange departure. As mentioned above, looks like a step backwards.

I wonder if there was a falling out between the two Brians which caused one to leave after only a year. Another thought is that he's friends with the ETSU coach. Strange move whatever the reason behind it is..

Could also be a situation where he'd be a coach-in-waiting whereas Bradley would make no promises that he'd take over if Wardle were to move on. Just speculation.

I always wondered if Brian was a short term member of the staff. Drew left really late and Brian was available, 45 minutes away and familiar with Bradley and the Valley. Nothing against Brian Jones but for some reason I always felt he was a short term member of the staff especially when a former head coach at North Dakota and interim at ISU was an assistant coach while Foster and Bargen were Associate head coaches.

J.Howard would have been a better fit at Bradley then he is at SIU.

Brian is apparently in the picture of the team that's in the 23-24 roster thread, as his name is listed in this tweet:

I don't know when the picture was taken, but the date of the tweet is April 26, just last week. Don't know what happened that he bolted out of town so quickly.

Yes, the photos of the Bradley workout were posted by the Bradley men's basketball twitter account on April 26.

I suspect they were one or two days earlier at a spring workout of the team.
That would have been nearly a week before Coach Jones was hired by East Tennessee State on May 1. Thus he was still part of the Bradley staff at that time, and would have been there as part of his coaching duties. I think we are making too much of this change. I have not heard of any issues between Coach Jones and anyone else on the staff. He was very well liked by the players and his collogues, and a great coach. People change jobs for many reasons. Joining a new young staff at ETSU seems to me like a good move for him.

I doubt there were any problems also, he could be leaving because the weather is so much better down there or many other reasons.

Hated to see Brian leave. Think he did a good job and was well liked by the players . Side note Brian played under Hall of Fame High School Coach Duncan Reid ay Rock Island HS. I was fortunate to work his last game of his Freshmen year in 1988 at the Assembly Hall. It was a game they got beat in OT by Kendall Gill.I'm sure Duncan would be very proud of what Brian has accomplished in his Coaching career.

I think this hurts. Obviously having good recruiters is important, but I think we all saw the difference in player development, in season adjustments, and in game adjustments that Brian seemed to bring this past year. The best I’ve seen out of this staff in all those areas. Recruiting may not be easy, but the development of players is just as important once you get them here. I think he will be missed and hope they find someone good to replace him. I also think it was really good for Brian Wardle to have a somewhat outside and new voice, as I think Wardle has a tendency to get stubborn and stuck in his ways sometimes, like a lot of coaches. This seemed to push him to having his best year as well. Change is inevitable in college basketball, just have to find the right person to replace him with. Will be interesting to see if it’s a recruiter or a strategy guy. Ideally both.

Yes. I think it shows Wardle is willing to bring in and listen to new ideas

Him having worked at ISU for any length of time tainted our program. This purifies things again.

I think it would be nice if Bradley could hire a well respected high school coach from Chicagoland as an assistant.
