Assistant Coach Brian Jones leaves BU

Here are my 2 candidates for the assistant coaching job. Marcellus Sommerville or JaShon Henry

JaShon needs to start at the bottom. I would guess Marcellus isn't interested in coaching otherwise he would be. Your better bet if you want someone with connections to the Bradley program would be Danny Ruffin, locally. We need someone with good recruiting ties, i.e. well connected h.s. coach or juco coach. Ideally someone who is great with Xs and Os, and also has strong Illinois recruiting connections.

Always said we need a Dodie Dunson personality on he staff for recruiting ...awesome person, always upbeat and can connect to the younger generation on the recruiting trail....plus he has that true Bradley connection being a past player...:!:

Ruffin I think will probably be at Peoria High for a while, he just got done with his second season as a high school HC, and I'd guess he wants to leave at least a bit of a legacy there considering his father and how close he is with Coach B. Definitely could be a candidate at BU in the future. I'm not sure how good of a fit at the college level he would be though. I graduated the same year as Ruffin and saw plenty of him around, but he always seemed like a real quite guy. He may be a bit more of an X & O guy vs recruiter.

I could see Wardle going after a former player of his before someone like Ruffin or Dunson who he has no connection to. I like Dunson but he's been more involved with coaching and recruiting the women's game since graduation. I think Wardle will reach into his own connections to find his next assistant.

Like most have already said, hated to hear Brian Jones was leaving.I think he helped the team alot last year.eSince replacement names have been tossed around, does anyone have any thoughts on either Greg Lansing or Matt Lotach.I think coach Wardle and Matt have been pretty close in the past.I haven't heard what Greg Lansing is doing since leaving Ind St.

Now we're talking carter. That's exactly the kind of assistant we need and both would probably be available. Lansing is currently a pro scout so I'm not sure we could match what he's currently being paid by the Sixers. If we're looking for an X & O kind of coach both would probably be fantastic, especially Lansing.

Bradley's budget for this role would be roughly in the $125,000 per year neighborhood.

This is the perfect spot to enter Matt Lottich. I e always liked and respected him. When you talk about Coach Jones’ departure many this could play in, but Eastern Tennessee is beautiful country. The cost of living is much less and the property tax burden is a lot lower. You can easily make up a salary disparity from moving from Illinois to Tennessee.

Right. That won't get you much, but if an out-of- work coach like Lottich (or someone else recently fired) needs an immediate paycheck...

Most out of work head coaches probably don't need an immediate paycheck. For instance, Lottich received an extension in 2020 and was under contract through 2025. He could sit a year or 2 out if he likes.

I agree Steve! I don't know what Ja'Shon's employment goals are for his future. As a fan, it would get great if Ja'Shon would be hired as an entry level coach. I've seen videos of coaches practicing with/against the players. The intensity of the practices would go to a new level when the new players get schooled by old man Ja'Shon!

Good point Old Coach, I didn't think that through. I would imagine someone like Lottich would want to stay relevant as an assistant somewhere in order to stay on the radar for future coaching opportunities. I would welcome a coach like that at BU, but I also wouldn't think he would want to play third fiddle to our two current assistants.
