Article in the Indianapolis paper says Eric Gordon is visiting Illinois this weekend and this coming week the Gordons will issue a statement that will put an end to speculation he could withdraw his committment to Illinois. But we'll have to wait to see what this "final event" will be.

This is off topic... but my last post made me think for a sec....

If these ball players are such big money makers... and they know they are when they are like 8 yrs old.... NBA and the money takes a front and center seat.... education? - schmeducation!.... gotta wait 1 yr outta High School til NBA.... Europeans ought to start firing up BIG contracts with H-U-G-E buyouts that only the NBA can buy-out, and WILL!

I'm not talking too large that becomes non-economical... but European teams could flourish with great young talent and sell more tickets (and hot dogs) for a year for a guy like EG and then get a 'kickback' buyout from the NBA team that wants him.

Heck - just think of all the unregulated corrupt money that could be spent campaigning for these players to play one year in Europe before going into the NBA. And the 'bust' players can get stuck over in Europe still making decent money without wasting money in salary caps.... which would allow more money for the 'franchise' players to hopefully stay more than 1-3 years.

actually, i heard mark cuban talk about this idea.he went a step further and stated that you start paying their family early to lock them in.

For anyone who can't read the whole story, it recaps the entire Gordon saga, and reports that it is all about to come to an end, as later this week, the Gordons will make some kind of public announcement regarding Eric Gordon's college decision.
Isn't that what he did already when he verbally committed to Illinois?

There are a lot rumors flying around. Many Indiana fans are hoping he will switch and attend Indiana, but the rumor among Illini fans is the Bruce Weber's visit to Gordon at his high school last week and Gordon's visit to the Iiilinois campus this past weekend have finally solidified his decision to come to Illinois.

It's time for this to end.
 
I, for one (I am sure), have enjoyed this "circus-ride" EGordon has allowed UIUC to take.

It has, at least, taken their egos down a notch (just a little - but down, nonetheless) since the Championship game of 2005 and their belief 'they have arrived' as one of THE elite Top 10, if not Top 5 programs in the Nation.

But on a sad note (just a little tear - if anything, maybe a spec in my eye), I feel a little sorry for a program (ahem... the UIUC in this case) getting kidnapped by a teenager who believes it is "ALL ABOUT ME". And clearly EG does (and his family supports it, if not actually orchestrates it).

As for chj's 'moratorium'.... one definition of Moratorium is: "a legally authorized period of delay in the performance of a legal obligation or the payment of a debt".

Does chj know something we don't know about how the Illini might obtain such highly regarded players?

the story has changed again. What's new. Now it's being reported that Gordon will not make any announcement this week, but will travel to the Indiana campus again this weekend for another visit and attend the Indiana-Connecticut football game.
He visited Illinois campus last weekend, and was at Indiana the weekend before that.

With all the national publicity this kid is getting for this circus, and the fact that it has helped propel him to the top of the 2007 rankings, I wouldn't be surprised if he doen't decide until next spring.

Does anyone recall the incredible hype about a New York high schooler about a decade ago named Felipe Lopez?

Before Felipe Lopez ever played a college game he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated, he was named the best high school player ever, called an immediate impact player, a sure bet college and NBA star, and he was pursued by ever major college with a ferocity and media circus resembling this Gordon/Rose saga. (some of this was inflated because he was from New York :wink: )

But, the facts in retrospect now show that he was at best a good college player, not a superstar. His best season of all his four years in college was his freshman year, when he averaged 17.8ppg, and then all the rest of his four college years were seemingly just coasting (at St. Johns). He did get drafted, but at the end of the 1st round in 1998, the weakest NBA draft ever in which Michael Olowokandi was picked first, and only one of the top eight players picked ever became all star caliber. Most of the 1st round pick from that year are names that even a hardened NBA fan cannot recognize
(Michael Dickerson, Matt Harpring, Mirsad Turkcan, Brian Skinner, Sam Jacobson, Vladmir Stepania,Corey Benjamin)
In the end, Lopez completed a short (<4 year) career in the NBA playing only a handful of minutes in the NBA and averaging only 5 pts/1 assist.

Yep, I remember that well. Clark Francis of the Hoop Scoop gave Lopez a rating of 12 on a 10 point scale (sounds like something from the movie Spinal Tap :D ). The "experts" all said he could be a superstar in the NBA right out of high school. Like so many New York City "legends", the reality was nowhere near the hype. Pearl Washington, anyone?

Anybody remember Rashard Griffith? One of the Chicago papers had an article about him when he was in 8th grade...and the writer thought he could possibly hold his own in the NBA....as an 8th grader!!!!!! I don't think he ever played in the NBA after a decent stint at Wisconsin.

Ronnie Fields ring a bell to anyone? There's a "can't miss" kid or 2 every year. A lot of them miss.
 
Comparing Rashard Griffith to Ronnie Fields is wrong. Fields has been a life long minor league (read not much money) player while Griffith had a very successful overseas career. Griffith did quite well financially.

The only comparison was they were both guys who never lived up to the hype they received in high school. I would say it is not so much a criticism of the players themselves but moreso the people who hyped them up.
