Personally, I feel generic does nothing for the university. The squirrel offers positives both in marketing and entertainment value, as well as opens up otherwise unavailable markets.

Let's not forget, gargoyles scare kids. Creighton went with a vicious Billy Bluejay in the late 70's, but parents stopped taking their kids to the game because the kids were scared. After half a season, he was gone.
