The Big Ten Plus Two?

I had read elsewhere that Rutgers was getting serious consideration. They're fielding some top level teams, and they capture the NYC market since they're only about 40mi away from the city.

Not that it matters, as B4L has pointed out that no MVC school would be chosen, but ISU and MSU also have football programs that are D-1. If the Big 10 were to grow it most likely would be heading east.

Why would Rutgers move from the Big East to The Big Ten? If there are any teams that would leave the Big East for the Big Ten and remotely it would be Syracuse or Louisville. Teams and institutions are trying cut their travel. What sense would Rutgers play into that. I understand trying to capture the NY market but that would be the only plus.

What about Cincinnati? Pretty close to the geographic region. Good Football team right now. Historically they had been pretty good in basketball.

Notre Dame is the team that should join the Big 10 as far a perfect fit goes, but they won't because of all the reasons stated.

Agree that ND would be a great fit because of their national reach but Cincnnati would not be considered because of Ohio State.

I heard a former big ten football coach on the score saying NDU no longer had an appreciable financial tv revenue advantage when compared to the financial benefits joining the big ten would bring. I think it was Jerry dinardo or something like that.

This may be the case for the TV deal but they keep 100% of bowl revenue (which hasnt been much recently), and this is a HUGE money maker for them... with other schools splitting all bowl revenue evenly- they have a huge advantage not splitting theirs with anyone...

Here is the official Big Ten Statement on expansion
http://www.bigten.org/genrel/121509aaa.html

short summary...
"..that the timing is right for the conference to once again conduct
a thorough evaluation of options for conference structure and expansion.

The COP/C understands that speculation about the conference is ongoing....
the Big Ten (will) evaluate options, while respecting peer conferences and their member institutions.
No action by the COP/C is expected in the near term."
