And if you heard Bruce Pearl's press conference HE took TOTAL responsibility for this loss and not having the players ready to play...... hmmmm. :rolleyes: :idea:
 
BTW -- Indiana needed a lot of luck -- some really suspicious favorable calls down the stretch and then a really bizarre and disputable call on a basket at the buzzer in order to get to overtime to beat Ferris State..

But check this out...
here's the basket at the final buzzer that DID GO IN...and would have ended the game in regulation with a WIN for visiting D-II Ferris State..

Note that the ball is out of the shooter's hands and there is STILL 0.4 seconds remaining on the clock...

But, what is crazy and confusing, is that the light on the backboard is also on -- and that's what the refs saw and nullified the basket to go to overtime.

BUT -- clearly the refs made the wrong call -- as the ball was out of the shooter's hands while there was still clearly 0.4 seconds on the clock -- which is a LOT of TIME!!
Hw could the refs be so bad??? Even the Hoosier fans are stumped..and there's one thread going saying they were embarrassed about the refs who called so many phantom calls against Ferris that helped IU get to OT.

They did not necessarily make the wrong call. Here's why:

The backboard clock with the shot clock is the official clock and is synced with the actual scorer's table. The light on the backboard also is synced.

These are the clocks the officials reference.

There is a delay on ribbon board/score board clocks (as seen in the Duke/Butler game and others; see here: Shot) that is about .4 give or take, depending on the arena. It's just a "flaw" in the way the timing system works inside of arenas.

Typically, TV cameras focus on a stationary clock, which tends to be something on a ribbon board or center-hung score board. This leads to a lot of confusion among fans in these situations.

I guess the point is that the officials probably got this right, based on the image on the IU board. Admittedly, it's not easy to tell if the shot is out of his hand. Based on his shooting form, I think not, but that's just an opinion.

As for the flow of the game...Indiana has some work to do to be where they have the potential to be this year.

Crean has brought in some talented players. Of course, the Big Ten is going to be pretty strong this year.

not so sure...although it's moot since that was the refs' ruling.....
but since, of course, any piece of equipment can malfunction...there are a lot of people on the IU boards currently thinking they got away with murder and a homie call..not to mention a few other ref calls down the stretch that greatly benefitted the Hoosiers

So -- how is the buzzer and backboard light NOT directly connected to the game clock so that the buzzer goes off simultaneously with 0:00??

if you are saying the two are independent, then how does the time regulating the buzzer and backboard light know when to start and stop his timer unless it's directly linked to the actual game clock..
so if it's linked to the game clock, then when the two differ, how can we be sure it is the buzzer that is correct?

Let's say the buzzer goes off with 2 minutes left -- then according to you -- the game is over and the players walk off the floor??
Of course not -- this simply has to be a toss-up type judgement call on the refs' part and personally I think Ferris got screwed...

this blogger thought the basket was good -- and that IU loses...he also thinks Matt Roth's knee injury did NOT look good...

You're mischaracterizing what I said. They aren't completely independent, just not completely synced, because of known arena issues.

It is not a judgment call. This is a known issue to officials.

They look for the backboard light (which I said was synced)/clock and then listen for the buzzer (sound is slower than light, but it's pretty close, really close to 00.0 and definitely a lot closer than the time on a ribbon/score board). And go to the table for review.

The clock the TV viewers typically see is one that has a delay. Check out the Butler/Duke photo I posted.

This isn't a coin flip.

Look, neither of us was there and all either of us has seen is a still image.

But I do know the protocol in these situations and the issues with arena clocks and what TV uses to show its viewers.

You're making it out to be a conspiracy and it's not. You'll see this situation a few times this year and you'll see some fans going crazy, but they'll likely be wrong because they don't know what I just told you.

They may have got the call wrong, but what I described is correct.

And really, we're talking about an exhibition game.
