Star Syracuse guard Eric Devendorf was accused by a female student of striking her back on Halloween night, but despite requests by the local police to the states attorney to issue an arrest warrant, the states attorney refused. He turned the case over to the Syracuse University judiciary board.

Jim Boeheim has repeatedly refused to issue any discipline, saying it's not his job.

Now Devendorf has been suspended by the judicial board for the remainder of the school year--

But even that isn't enough for Boeheim to suspend Devendorf from the team. Devendorf plans to appeal the decision, and is scheduled to start and play in Syracuse' next game Saturday.
 
ah, ha....so he was already on campus-wide probation for slugging another student last spring!!

by the way...this campus judicial board suspension isn't just a suspension from the basketball team,
it is ..."an indefinite suspension from the university that will last at least for the rest of
the academic year, which ends in May"
"A suspension means the student has been involuntarily withdrawn from the university. It prohibits
that student from any presence or activity on university property and from participation in any SU class or program,
according to the university's judicial handbook."




"..the five-member judicial board....states that it found Smith's testimony to be credible and sincere."

but get this...
"Devendorf's lawyer, has said that Devendorf was defending himself from Smith. Sullivan has said
that Smith was the aggressor, and Devendorf had raised his hand to defend himself."

Devendorf is the 5th Syracuse player to recently be charged with assaulting a woman accoring to the article...

Now maybe someone can explain to me how you can be suspended from the school, but you can't be suspended from the athletic team...

Don't those things go together...or aren't they supposed to?
 
It certainly sounds like Devendorf is guilty, but of course, as we've been reminded here so many times, we should all wait until the issue is completely resolved before we pass any judgement. A young man's life can be ruined by such allegations. ;)
 
Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim thinks the suspension the Syracuse judicial board handed Devendorf is too severe. He thinks Devendorf should be allowed to play, and criticizes the judicial board for believing the victim.

But here is a part of this story that I hadn't seen reported before--
The board, in its decision, said it recommended Devendorf be suspended, in part, because he was on probation for harming another student in the spring.

Devendorf will continue to play anyway, while he appeals the suspension. Some sources suggest that it could be possible, with legal manuvers and continuances, to drag this appeal out for the rest of the basketball season.

Boeheim said Devendorf will continue to practice and play with the team while Devendorf appeals.

I has been reported a few places...
There was earlier talk that one of Devendorf's own lawyers had called the DA
and plead with them not to pursue charges, since Devendorf was already on probation for an incident last spring.

Actually...after reading a bit more on the numerous threads that are on the Syracuse boards, I have to wonder...

Apparently it is and has been widely known on campus that Devendorf was involved in a fight and hit someone last spring and
has since been on probation per the campus Judicial Board.

If that be the case, then what is Boeheim doing defending this kid so much, helping him fight the suspension,
AND--- if he was involved in the incident last spring, then why has Boeheim never disciplined the kid, all the while starting the kid and playing him full time in every game?
 
I think Syracuse coach Boeheim is fighting to keep Devendorf on the team because Boeheim is fighting for his job at the same time. I havn't heard any rumors but he may be on the hot seat if Cuse does bad.

I was just watching ESPN and they had highlights of the Syracuse game
The announcer said Boeheim must be making some kind of statement...
since Syracuse was up 26 on a visiting LBSU and Boeheim "still had Devendorf in there".

anyway, Tennessee was losing at home to Temple by about 15!!
 
Justice is served by fate....

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim has adamantly refused to discuss any discipline for his player who has repeatedly gotten in trouble and who is now embroiled in an assault case.
But Syracuse is possibly distracted enough that they lost to Cleveland State last night.
Devendorf started and played 37 minutes, the most of any player in the game.
In Syracuse's 10 games this season, Devendorf has yet to miss a start.

By the way....
here's a story of a head coach who suspends a player even when he doesn't have to and no rule says he does, just because the kid did something that was improper....kudos to Jim Boylen of Utah.

He might not be there today if they hadn't won in 2003. He was under extreme pressure in the mid-to-late 90's and again at the dawn of the century. He survived NCAA penalties in 1992 and took the team to the title game in '96 I believe. But for the 6 years after, he didn't get beyond the Sweet 16 and had to settle for 2 NITs, and until signing Carmelo, there were no signs of moving beyond that.

But now they are losing money in the Big East as the league continues to grow. So now 6 years removed from the title, the Orange have not moved beyond the Sweet 16 and have settled for two NITs.

I would imagine the pressure is on.
 
One article suggested it would be possible with the semester break, and the appeal process to drag this out for a several months if he appeals. So I expect him to appeal so he can play out the season.
 
Devendorf's lawyer did get the appeal filed, and getting in in just before the Wed. deadline when all the students and even the members of the judicial board are dismissed for the holidays was no accident.
It automatically guarantees Devo can continue to play for a month since the judicial herarings board won't even meet again until after they return from Xmas break ....'til mid-January.

Note the MAJOR difference between how BU handled the Ruffin case and how Syracuse is handling this case (and this is handled similarly by many of the BCS schools -- see Tennessee). Some posters and the PJS complain about the handling of the Ruff case but are nowhere to be found with their opinions on Syracuse...... Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.
 
in all honesty, I don't care what Syracuse does and how they or their fans handle this issue...
I think the only reason it is worthy of discussing is to point out the lack of reason and hypocrisy that went on in Peoria over cases of far less severity.
 
I just heard on ESPN Radio that Devendorf has to complete 40 hours of community service before he can play another game for the Cuse...
 
Jim Boeheim must be a bit embarrassed that it took a few students on their campus board to overrule him and his decision not to impose any penalties at all.
