In performance, there are two things that people generally remember: the beginning and the ending. It doesn't matter what's in between.
If you go to a concert, for example, if the performance is bad from the start, you are perhaps uneasy. The performer could turn it around and perform their best show ever until the end. And if there is a mistake or abrupt ending to a song or performance, that will be the last thing you'll carry that with you.
Tradition is based on two things: accomplishments and memories. Every year that goes by without a championship of any kind means your tradition is diminished.
Therefore, tradition is your last bad performance.
