Smoker Wrap-up

Hey dog.....do you think this will happen again next year?

Can you PM me like price and any other info?

Thanks.

This was year 15...they seem to pull it off every year. There was some talk about BAM not attending this year but low and behold...there he was.

While the crowd is probably 60-40 BU its utterly importaint to have BOTH coaches IMO.

Its sold out USUALLY in advance every year FWO......I got in on the ground level years ago and get offered my table of ten ($550.00) each year.

Not to sound pretentious but you usually have to know someone to get in. Like I said...its not a money thing or a prestige issue its just luck and timing. I was just lucky to be able to grab a table at the correct time and have reserved one for all the following years.

Funny thing THIS year I oversold my table....I ask different people every year and some approach me. This year when all was said and done I had sold all ten seats...and forgot to leave myself one. :) I had to bus tables.....:)

Did Weber blurt out again what teams in the Big 10 he thinks will "Suck" lol.....

No but he did say he thinks IU could surprise people this year....Likes PU, MSU, OSU and UofI. Thinks Hummel, when healthy, is a ton.

Likes his depth and thinks they have a chance to be pretty good. THinks DM has a chance to make the NBA....says good pg's that can really pass are a dying art and DM can really dish it. Hard worker too but certainly
NOT vocal.

lol thanks!

I actually bussed tables there for 2 years! So I could probably sneak in next year if I can remember how to bus......

Wessler MC'd the event...his opening remark was that there was a few people trying to get him fired on the Bradleyfans board....

I don't want him fired..he is good at stirring the pot..
I would like to see them hire some more people to help cover Bradley...

I suspect it'll be the same 3 teams that have sucked for the past 2 years

The Journal Star will not be hiring more staff as it is still trying to cut costs as evidenced by this last months paper, if the paper does not get better they will lose more subscribers.

Exactly, we've heard the 'dominating' quote in years past and it mostly meant our returning so-so post player was better than other options. I would much rather hear that WE is vastly improved, but is getting dominated by JP or AD.

Although, I do really like hearing about a post player that likes to dunk. Not because dunks are emotionally satisfying, but because strong dunkers usually want the ball, and know what to do with the ball when they fight for it. Dunking was the first indication that POB was going to be better than what we saw from past teams.

It would be nice if WE could be a bigger version of Theron Wilson in the post. That would help this team immensely.

Great job on the recap Dogs. I can't really think of much that you left out but I'll throw in a few tidbits that I do remember....

JL said that with Will's new frame he has acquired a large selection of sleeveless shirts that he now wears around campus....says he walks around like "he's the man" and JL likes WE's growing confidence.

In past years BAM kind of downplays his team at the smoker saying things like "We can't guard anybody" or "This player shoots every darn time he touches the ball"...not so much this year. It was obvious he really likes his team this year. He said their is competition at every spot and they are a much deeper team this year....only weakness is a true back-up point guard to DM.

JL said that WE is probably the biggest "force" on the team but DSE is a close second. That being said, JL also mentioned he will be leaning on his three senior guards very heavily this year.

JL said that at a filming of a new pro-mo he was shocked for a moment when he saw number 54 come around the corner and thought for a brief moment that Sam Singh was back for another year...(crowd laughs) then he remembered that WE will be wearing 54 this year and he relaxed....they were going to give WE all of last years #54 jerseys but "they were all stretched out"...

BAM said that during his first couple years at Illinois his critics said that he was a decent coach but he couldn't recruit....now they say he can recruit but he's not much of a coach...he just can't get a break...

Bruce also mentioned that he thought one of his biggest faults was that he is way to honest with the media and "I need to learn to shut my mouth once in a while"....

A couple of more things I just remembered.....

JL said that the very challenging boot camp pre season workouts were a great success....at the end of the week three players were in walking boots! (nothing serious...just precautionary measures. All three said that if we were playing DUKE tomorrow they would be ready but since it's just workouts they would gladly sit out.:p)

Talked briefly with Sammy's dad and "CISCO" said Sam's ankles are still a problem that will be with him all year but it is not bad enough that it will keep him out of the line up. Sammy is a tough kid!

lol BW appears old-school and boring sometimes.....but i love his "off the record" comments and that postgame interview after the Dayton loss last year was so brutal. He is determined and serious! Exactly how I would coach lol.

I was given a poster that was created by the ISC for last week's "smoker". It shows Jim Les and Bruce Weber with a little photo-shopping to make them into muscled warriors with each team's schedules.
