I saw that report on Deng Leek. He is 7'1", and 250 pounds. At one time this kid had interest from some pretty good schools. Eventually, way back in November, 2010 he committed to Western Kentucky (over Washington State) out of the prep school he was attending in North Carolina.
However, like most kids who are from Africa, his educational transcripts from Sudan could not be verified, and so he never qualified and ended up having to go from the prep school to a junior college. He spent a year at Tallahassee CC, then transferred to Jacksonville Junior College in Texas for 2 more years. At Jacksonville this past season as a sophomore, he averaged 4.0 ppg and 3.6 rpg. He has fallen off the radar, and now has very little D1 interest.

Other recruiting sites are reporting he committed back on 5/20/14 to SIU.

He's big guy (7'0", 240 lbs), but only averaged 4.0 ppg and 3.6 rpg as a soph at juco, and he had virtually no D1 recruiting interest. He sounds like a bit of a project.

SIU also has Illinois transfer Ibby Djimde eligible to play the 5 as a junior this coming season. And they have Bola Olanyan, returning as a sophomore who played some "5" for them last year. Those will be about the only players with significant size for Barry this season. Incoming freshman Jordan Caroline is listed at 6'6", but he is probably not actually that tall.

I think you are right, he is a project.
As far as committing earlier.. maybe that was his visit.
He told the coaches he's a go yesterday I think.

I bet Barry is almost ecstatic with their interior for next year. The last few years they have been a bit sad on the inside department. Drinkard wasn't exactly the best and I honestly can't think of any of their other inside guys without googling it.

There is also 6'8" Austin Weiher.

Deng Leek has apparently committed to SIU.
He is finishing a class this summer and will then be good to go.

7-1 245, gives them "a dimension" they haven't had in "shot blocking" but he isn't a scorer (3.6ppg) and strangely must get pushed out of the paint a lot as he only gets 2 rpg - remarkably few given he's playing against juco opponents, many of whom are 6 to 7 inches shorter and not going D-I...

"Deng gives us a dimension we've been missing the last few years -- an
imposing shot-blocking presence in the paint," said Hinson. "Having a player
who can challenge shots has the potential to improve your entire defense."

SIU has no seniors so unless someone leaves, they could be done recruiting until 2016.

"with six freshmen, three sophomores, four juniors and no seniors, SIU's 13-
man roster is essentially set through the 2015-16 season.
"Leek is the 19th player Hinson has signed in slightly more than two years."
