This is an intersting comparison....

Both are/were good for sure. With SM you knew pretty much what to expect. He doesn't seem to get out of control too much.
With DR you weren't totally sure each night out but he could also pull off the unbelievable plays from time to time.

I think I would go with DR. His pressure on D gives him the edge IMO.

SM or DR would sort of depend on who the other players on the hypothetical team would be. They are different types of players who bring different skills.

You could make a case for either player depending on who they would be playing with...

Great point AZBU!! I was thinking the same thing. I can't vote on this because it would depend upon the team. Ruffin would do better with an athletic team like the Sweet 16 team, Sammy would be better on less athletic teams. I'd love to have both on my team to use at different times in the game and against different teams. :)

What Kind of Avatar is That:? You sick:? Something Wrong with you:doubt:
You hot ,you cold:?: This just don't match up with the Braves4Life (The King of Avatars) we have become to know:!:
Oh, let me guess who your avatar exemplifies; Its Daddy Wilkins, after finding out his son just verbled to BU:mrgreen:

I have no idea what SM would have done with POB or Cellus, but the facts remain, Ruffin was the point guard on a team that won 2 NCAA games.

They both are very very good players and there isnt a huge difference between the two. But at the end of day Ruffins team won big and SM's are still a work in progress.

Using that logic Ruffin>JL, and JJ Tauai is better than Hersey and AP!!!!!

This is an interesting topic for sure. I don't think I'll vote, because I think both are good in different ways. Ruff was unbelievably quick and had big wins, but Sammy is just a great leader with tremendous toughness.

I would probably take Sammy if I had to vote because I like his unequalled leadership abilities and that he is a person you can trust to stay out of trouble off the court. But I'd take either any day!

I hate comparisons like this as they are both good players and completely different in how they run the point guard position, I would take both of them in a second and be very happy to have them as would a crap load of other schools.

Comparing them both at their best...

As a point guard...Ruffin hands down

As someone to take the final shot for a win...Maniscalco hands down

Great stuff, guys. I just wanted to see your thoughts -- I had this as an article idea, but I have nowhere to post it to now that the Examiner.com site is being run by an ISU guy!

My thought (referencing the original question) is that I would rather build a team around DR than SM.

Agreed.

This is a great and horrible topic all at he same time! Hopefully Sammy can take us to the final 4 and we can revisit this topic again next April.

Have to agree that this is an interesting debate, but since SM still has a year to complete his college career, it may be a bit premature.

That said, I chose SM, more because of my expectations of DR were very high and I often walked away thinking he could have done more, where my expectations for SM have never been as much & I usually walk away feeling he overacheived. At the end of the day statistically they were probably fairly equal, but again, it's all in my head or my thoughts of their capapblities that make me more satisfied with one than the other.

Like others have said, both are excellent players that I'm very glad I've been able to watch for their careers.

Set yourself up something at blogger.com, set your own deadlines and requirements!

(That's what I did, and you can see now that I'm on something like a 4-month deadline hehehehe)

Examiner.com what???? I've stopped reading that the day they put that ISU guy on. If he wanted traffic he would come on this site and let us know what he was writing.

Im not sure of the answer to this and thus didnt vote.

I feel bad that SM has had to deal with one particular knucklehead, and a lack of inside players, and thus will never reach the things that distinguish DR, which is winning two NCAA games.

I don't think the new guy has ever even written anything....... and I wouldn't care if he did! Bring back "The Mayhem"! :)
