Royce Waltman Fired for the 2nd Time in a Year

Royce was fired from Indiana State right after they lost last year in St. Louis, but he caught on at Indianapolis University (D2), and coached there this past season.
Royce guided them to a 14-13 finish, and has now been fired at Indianapolis.

Indianapolis' press release said this about their search for a replacement..........
here is what they say they are looking for........
"A class act, a community person who is about academics and can produce a winner,
one who is a good recruiter and will look close to home since I feel Indiana is a great place to start."

I wonder if they are hinting that this isn't what they've had this past year?

??????? Wow! I always thought Waltman was a class act. I wonder what happened there?

What would make you think he isn't one? Just because the press release said that is one of the qualifications?

Waltman wasn't fired. He just wasn't given the job on the full-time basis. I don't blame UIndy there.

Yes, as a couple of you have already said, Royce was given the job, just days before the beginning of the season after UIndy's head coach stepped down. This was Waltman's second stint with the University of Indianapolis, having coached them before making the move to ISU.

My bad! I did not know he was hired only on an interm basis. Still a bit surprised though they didn't think he was the person they wanted considering his D1 experience, but that is their choice I guess.

Royce was hired in July, 2007 as an assistant at Indianapolis, NOT as an interim assistant.
Then he was promoted to head coach in Oct., and now is let go...."will not be retained" according to the article.
He didn't resign, and if he had a contract at all, it was likely for a year from 7/07 or had the option of renewal, so
you can call it what you want but I say he was fired.

Probably a poorly worded press release rather than an indictment (for lack of a better word) of Waltman, that's what I'm guessing.

From Indianapois' official release upon the resignation and appointment of Waltman, dated October 1, 2007:

Quote:

"UIndy Director of Athletics Dr. Sue Willey has appointed assistant coach Royce Waltman as the team's Interim Head Coach for the 2007-08 season. A national search will be conducted at season's end."

He was NEVER going to be retained. Never Never Never. Not hired to be the head coach, appointed by discretion of the AD, in an effort to bring in the best overall candidate for the program's future.
