Remy asks for release

I am disappointed with Remy's decision, but I knew it was a good possibility with the Les firing. Losing Remy was a big loss, but we have no idea what type of COLLEGE player he will be. We know he was good in high school, but Division I is a big difference. Maybe he will be good and maybe he won't. We have no choice but to move on now. The biggest reason it is a disappointment is because we hooked him, we got him in the boat, but he still got away.

JB: It is not nonsense. It is common sense. HS students try to get into the best school they can get into when applying to college. While many people base this on a school's reputation in that student's chosen major, college athletes base this on a school's reputation in that student's chosen sport. Common sense (and not fallout drama) dictates that it is in Remy's best interest at this time to choose the most reputable program of all the new options on the table.

JB, I'm not disagreeing with you in that it is possible that RA's stock did go up and he might have been out of here anyway, but I think you should know by now that the Les firing did play a lot into his decision.

DC could respond himself, but I do know that he definitely knows a lot of the players, coaches, alumni and others "in the know" so to speak. And if he says that RA's decision had a lot to do, if not almost everything to Les's firing, then I definitely believe him. And as many people here predicted (even from many who wanted Les fired), most teams that go through coaching changes do lose recruits from the previous coach. So why would RA's decision be any different?

I'm not moving on yet! Let me tell you why.

This again is in no disrespect to Coach Ford and his ability to turn this program around. He proved this year that he could take a team almost entirely comprised of new players and win the MAC conference regular season for the second year in a row. So if he brings in some halfway decent recruits before next season, he may just be able to do it again this coming year with Bradley.

But at the same time, for you and others to tell people to move on is just too premature. The administration made a decision to dump a popular coach and an all around great guy who did more great things off the court than had been done here in a long time. And he had (key word here, HAD) some great recruits and returning players coming back next year to a team that could have easily contended for the top of the Valley. But now Coach Ford has his hands full trying to land some replacements at the last minute that unless he gets lucky will not come close to matching the potential of the players we lost, one of which could have potentially lifted this program to levels not seen in quite a long time here!

No, that doesn't sound like we lost much, now does it? :roll:

At the very least, we at least have the right to express our dismay over losing some quality players, and we also have the right to express our concern in which direction this team is heading, at least for the next year or two. Again, nothing at all against Ford, and he may very well just make us forget all of our concerns by this time next year. But even if I am hopefully wrong about how good this team will be next year, at the very least I don't think those of us who predicted the player defections should be labelled as wrong for predicting this either. And I think we have the right to say this even if nothing else can be done to change these players' minds.

I think that is fair -- as we all would have loved to see how he did in a Braves uniform...but according to some this is nothing short of backstabbing disloyalty (read some of the SM threads) .......yet I agree you can't make a kid stay if he doesn't want to play here...
Hopefully some day we will get a news report that has Remy's honest answer about why he backed out..

I would agree but others have claimed repeatedly they were dissatisfied with the JL recruits who never finished higher than 4th
...so obviously we can't have it both ways
 
I think it is pretty safe to say unless someone here personally has spoken with Remy or his family, we have no idea what his intentions were regardless of the coaching change. Both sides of this argument is just speculation and your own opinion. I can't see how anyone can say they are certain one way or the other without speaking directly to RA. I am ready to move past a recruit that made a choice in what he feels is in his best interest.

Just my thoughts on the whole situation.

I believe we can all agree on this and let's rally around this and the new coach at this time. I'm going to throw away my rear view mirror.
 
yes -- but to avoid a rerun of fans turning on Geno and future players and trashing them - as they did to Mo then JL.... -- then we need to expose the hypocrisy of those who do it time and again...
wouldn't it be nice if those who call themselves Bradley fans actually give great support to their team, their players, and their coaches...

RA personally told me "he really wanted to play for coach Les"

so we have only a few options

He wanted to play for Les doesn't trust Geno as much
Sees that he now as the option to go BCS and can't pass it up

Most likely both.

But these days the "down side" of such an action is huge. Every high school coach and every AAU coach in the country will know Bradley did this to a kid, and will hold it against us for years.

I don't have a problem with a player looking for a release in this situation. Coaches make some promises about positions or playing time and now they don't know if that will happen with a new coach....coaches recruit players and then move on to a different job too and the players are caught in the middle....

I agree with you on the down side too DC.

I'm sure Geno's a trustworthy guy but, in most cases and in most major sports, a college athlete goes to a particular school to play for a coach. When I was playing Division I football, that's the way it worked for me -- I literally met the coach and made my decision, knowing little else about the school.

I understand The "Iceberg" comment was made fun of after DSE remained on the team. DSE was not even on my radar when I made that comment. I predicted 2-3 of the current team and 3 out of the 4 recruits would leave. I still think I will be right with my "Iceberg" prediction.

In the argument of doing JL wrong, my problem is with the admin letting him go a year or two earlier than he should have. I really believe he was let go with the fear he would have a great year next year..... then it would be MUCH tougher to get rid of him. If the admin wanted him out (For a few reasons I will not state), they they had to do it in 2011.

The fighting over his contract is why I'm currently not a Braves fan. I can NOT support this admin after the way they have treated him after the firing. JL will go on with life and do great. Gene Ford will go on and do great. I hope the admin retires and enjoys retirement!
 
I don't support the AD or the President.I have sent them a email telling them what I think and my checks will not be coming. I will only keep my tickets.

I agree 100% tornado, and that's why I was venting last night. I agree it is time to turn the corner and move on and give Geno all the support he needs to field a winning team. But the point of my comments was to state that the same people who were constantly starting one new thread after another for months and years on end calling for Les's firing are the same people who are now basically saying losing a few good recruits and returnees is "no big deal". And they are also the ones who are also telling people not to waste time in stating the opposing view because it's counterproductive and also that it's time to "move on". That is what I was objecting to, and you are 100% right tornado that we need expose the hypocrisy from these people. And it has to be done now because the last thing Coach Ford and the players need is to see a bunch of whining unsupportive Bradley fans posting here at the time they need them the most!

Aside from my other response to you AZ, my specific point about this issue is that yes, I think it is a REAL big deal we lost some good players. Losing RA is potentially very damaging because he could have been a game changer for this program. And yes, it's possible he may not live up to expectations either, but the potential was there. And again, I think Geno Ford has a chance to bring in some solid recruits to make up for these losses, but he will be a bit hamstrung as it is late in the recruiting season, and RA could have been one of Bradley's best players in a very long time.

Btw, NO one including myself is saying anyone on this board is unsupportive of the players, coaches and the team. I was only saying the players and the coaches would not want to be reading negative comments against the team in the future should the team struggle for the next year or two, because you know there will be a few posters here inevitably starting the "fire Ford" threads here if we end up playing on Thursday night at Arch Madness the next year or two.
