Recruiting Philosphies

tornado

New member
Here is an interesting article on the Indiana/scout site written by the administer and lead scout for HoosierNation.com, John Decker.

His title:
"Recruiting Philosphies Need to Change"

and he compares the one year that IU got from Gordon to the several years that Purdue is going to get from their new freshmen recruits, E??™twaun Moore, Scott Martin, JaJuan Johnson and Robbie Hummel.

"All this one-and-done stuff makes you wonder. Are college coaches recruiting the right players?

While the Gordons, Mayos and Bayless??™ of the world are now prepping for the next level, Purdue??™s E??™twaun
Moore, Scott Martin, JaJuan Johnson and Robbie Hummel are prepping for their next game.... Coach Matt
Painter will have all four back in 2009??¦and 2010??¦and 2011.

"Many college coaches are so awed by players with NBA skills that they pass on others who can do
more for a team??™s long-term stability and success. I??™m not suggesting the future IU staff actively seek
out players with a laundry list of deficiencies, but there??™s something to be said for recruits who are better
college prospects than professional ones.

You??™ll never see that reflected in recruiting rankings, where scouts analyze a player??™s ability to excel at
the professional level. But truth be told, the 35th-best player in a class might be a more valuable signee
than the No. 5 prospect.

Want some proof? Go back a couple of years to 2004, when IU signee Josh Smith was ranked No. 5 in the
class and Virginia??™s Sean Singletary was No. 35. Smith never played a minute of college basketball, while
Singletary recently earned his third straight first-team All-ACC honor. In 2005, No. 5 prospect and
Georgia signee Louis Williams also bypassed college and bolted for the league, while 35th-ranked Joe
Krabbenhoft is a valuable piece of a Wisconsin team that has gone 79-22 during his three seasons.

Preps have to spend at least one year in college now, but I??™ll still venture a guess that the 35th-ranked
player in the ??™07 class - Michigan State??™s Kalin Lucas - will have a more lasting impact on his team than
the No. 5 player - Memphis??™ Derrick Rose.

It might be unconventional thinking for coaches to start targeting an E??™twaun Moore over a Gordon or a
Luke Harangody over a Brandan Wright, but it??™s something for them to starting considering.

Why? Because four really good years add up to a whole lot more than one great one.

Pretty soon, coaches are going to need to realize that

It's a great article, and it's true. Billy Donovan adopted a similar philosophy a few years ago after Matt Walsh and a bunch of McDonald's All-American's exited very early in NCAA's. He ended up winning 2 national championships.

As I stated elsewhere, Ohio State is learning that recruiting one-and-done freshmen can backfire the next season,
and of the top 20 freshmen in the nation...only two are one teams that are still playing,
Derrick Rose and Kevin Love.

And here's another opinion saying the same thing,
that gambling on one season with superstar freshmen won't pay off.
Building a program vs. going after a couple big wins

"Was it worth it?
So far, only if K-State’s basketball standards are so low that two nights
(meaning the win over Kansas and the Tourney win over USC)
satisfy a fan base that has waited two decades for a return to glory."

Kansas State would have never gotten Walker or Beasly if not for Huggins , Kstate now is at least back on the radar so for them it was a good thing; as far as the Duke"s, Ohio States and UCLA"S they pretty muvh get their pick of the litter so it may only hurt them for a short time, lets face it, Memphis has no chance at winning the national title without Rose as Ohio State had no chance without Oden, even though Purdue has had a great season do you think that they will challenge for the NCAA title with those players.

I certainly think they could a year or two down the road.

Look at a team like Wisconsin from the same Big Ten that is having a great season despite having no likely NBA players.

I watched Wisconsin for the first time last night and they have got a 6-11 260 pound kid (can't remember his name) that was knocking down the K-State players like bowling pins. He had his way where ever he wanted to go. I think he has a shot at the NBA, I'd like to see him on the Bulls:) I think Wisconsin could go all the way.

Well you also think Theron is the next MJ... ;)

Greg Stiemsma is not an NBA player. He had a great game yesterday but he's averaging 3.4 points and 3 rebounds this year.
