Rant...

Players acting like puppy dogs, just don't know any better. Punish them by putting them on the treadmill was also classic "Barry speak". One of his players has already tweeted about the "little guy" so I'm curious how they are going to respond to Barry's 6 minutes of juicy tidbits. Barry has always been interesting to watch on the sidelines. Have placed many a bet, as have other teams fans at the Mo Valley Tournament, for when Barry takes his jacket off. Barry's a good coach but I'm afraid this is what people are going to remember him for.

bigjimmy, if you are a top team you can do that, but if you are seen on the recruiting trail as a rebuilding mid-major, then you don't want this kind of publicity. Most of the kids that would help SIU right now are going to have other offers - Barry can't be sending the signal that he treats the players as the problem, and that they don't have the right to an off-game without getting torn up or thrown under the bus publicly.

Heck - this is pretty much all Barry' team now - you can't use the excuse people have weakly tried to use here.
Every single player on this squad is someone Barry brought in except two- one who is his best player by far that he inherited & one Barry convinced to stay that is accountable for just 16 total points so far this season.

Barry has a good track record and will be just fine. One even acknowledged he was right…yes he wished we wouldn't have been called out by name which Barry apologized for……I'm not worried about Barry…he'll be fine

.. One even acknowledged he was right…..
you don't think the kids are a bit of a "captive audience" whose true opinions & feelings might just be throttled a bit by fears of losing playing time for what they say & do
I know any team I was ever on, I'd probably say what Beane said whether I believed it or not just to keep my playing time.
IMO, The opinion that means the most is the one spoken by the guy who had everything to lose by being honest.

Tornado I don't dispute that some recruits aren't going to look too fondly at this. Did Barry go over the top? The wife's shot fake comment probably went too far but that's Barry being Barry. His teams were always very well prepared and played their guts out. The fact that he's already reached this point with his team doesn't look good. The AD came out in support of him and Barry did apologize to the player he singled out so unless the players revolt and/or he can't recruit anyone to play for SIU Barry's not going anywhere. In this PC world we live in it's nice to see a coach hold his players accountable for their play and not award a blue ribbon to everyone who participates.

I here there is full support from the SIU fan base on this. Also he has had calls from some parents that say I want my son to play for you some day already. Barry is a well respected coach all over the country that just wore out his welcome at Missouri State just like Mo did here. He is a good coach that will get his players to play hard for him book it!!

Nice quote from Barry Hinson - he lets ya know how he really feels..

Regarding new officiating rules and hand checking....

"One coach definitely is not (happy..)

Southern Illinois??™ Barry Hinson said more teams are playing zone in the
Valley because of the league??™s youthfulness. But there??™s another reason,
Hinson was clear to add ??” the new rules favor offensive players just
recklessly driving into the lane, throwing their arms up and getting a foul
called.

???The biggest factor is the debacle we have going on right now is with college
officiating,??? he said. ???We just got a memo this week that says it (the new
rules emphasis) has changed the game for the better, and I absolutely think
that??™s a complete political spin and a scam
.

???I??™m not upset at the officials. I??™m upset at the inconsistency that we have in
college officiating. We have officials that night-in and night-out tell me ??”
and we??™re sitting here in January ??” they are confused and still don??™t know how to call the game. It just blows my mind."

just a little followup...

remember - after his rant - center Davante Drinkard tweeted a few comments that were not complimentary of Barry Hinson - gotta wonder if it cost him in playing time...

up to that point Drinkard was starting and averaging 20 mpg...
then within a few games after that tweet - his playing time shrunk and continues to shrink as time goes on - now he's averaged just 10 mpg over the past month and a half including just TWO MINUTES last game...

I think it has more to do with production than anything he tweeted or said.
It's not as if Drinkard does anything to deserve playing time. He is a 6'9" tall, and 250+ pound senior- he ought to be able to dominate inside against most teams, especially in the Valley where there are several teams weak inside.

Yet in his senior season Drinkard is averaging just 2.7 ppg and an amazingly low 2.1 rebounds per game. Bola Olaniyan, a freshman with a heck of a lot more upside, is averaging 2.8 ppg and 4.3 rpg, more than double Drinkard. Olaniyan isn't a star, but if I was Barry Hinson, I'd rather develop a far more athletic post player in Olaniyan by giving him more minutes, than waste them on Drinkard who produces almost nothing.
By the way, Barry also has Ibby Djimde, the former Illinois center, sitting out and he'll have 2 years of eligibility starting next year. I think he could be a good player in the MVC.

.... if you are seen on the recruiting trail as a rebuilding mid-major, then you don't want this kind of publicity....

saw an interesting discussion elsewhere...
it is well known that SIU has had two tremendous problems that last couple seasons - the massive exodus of players - even very good ones like Caroline, Lavender, Pendleton...
and the complete inability to bring in anyone of significance - forcing Barry to resort to the Geno-like trend of restocking with obscure juco kids every spring.
So .. could it be that this rant directly against his own players two years ago by Barry that was oddly praised by many in the media (even some of our locals) - has actually made it extremely difficult for him to connect with recruits and get any interest from decent players?
In other words - kids, unless desperate in the late spring with no DI offers, don't seem too warm about playing for Barry.
Just maybe that rant wasn't such a great idea after all.
