Providence to hire Fairfield's Ed Cooley

He was 13-19, 14-16, 17-15 the first three years...
then 23-11 last year and 24-7 this year but against SOS's of 240 or so -- and racking up a lot of wins vs. those 300+ Metro Atlantic foes...

Tornado--not to be funny but what kind of hire isn't risky? To me Ed Cooley has done a great job at Fairfield. He won the league. What kind of guy should Providence have gotten?

Or Bradley for that matter? Associate head coaches at "BCS" schools aren't a sure thing either.
 
Yeah, Cooley has considerably more experience and track record than Keno did. Don't seem like comparable hires to me.

Much of the criticism that got Keno Davis fired was that he did not know what it took to win in the Big East. His midmajor mentality hurt his recruiting as well as his coaching. Many fans wanted the next coach to come from the Big East, or another top conference.
So this hire will be under scrutiny immediately because he comes from a small school/midmajor background.
 
I figured that this may have been a potential landing spot for Sydney Johnson. So if Johnson wants to leave Princeton, this is probably decent news for us.

Providence fans, like most, are delusional and don't have an appropriate understanding of what there program is/should be. That's a REALLY hard job. Good luck to Cooley.

Fair question -- and definitely one that a whole lot of people on the Providence boards are already wondering about.....

Let's face it -- Providence suffers from being a bad team in a tough conference...they NEED to hit a home run and step it up and get out of the basement with DePaul....

They need a guy who has proven he can do it at the top level....winning a few games in a very weak conference -- the conference that's perpetually ranked between 16th toughest and 23rd toughest conference
......and a short burst of modest success defined by getting to the NIT at Fairfield hardly counts as succeeding at the top level.........

I am far from the only one seeing this as the same risky type of hire they just bailed on with Keno....

DePaul got Oliver Purnell, New Mexico got Steve Alford, Indiana got Tom Crean, UK grabbed Cal, USC went with Floyd, Ohio State got Thad Matta..

BTW -- Providence's superstar/best player, Marshon Brooks, the only reason the Friars even won more than 5 games, averaging 26 ppg has quit school and won't finish and get his degree.......
Cooley will have struggles as there's really nobody else left on the Friars --
their 2nd best scorer (11.6ppg), Council only hits 32% of his shots...but won't even do that well now that the defenses won't be worrying about Brooks.

I see Cooley as a better hire than Keno. One, he is from the area. Two, he was at Fairfield for a few years and wasn't a one-hit wonder.

Now, I agree, Providence needs to hit a home run here. But to me it's a two-part problem. Providence can do all they want but coaches are smart. I'm not sure the really, really "home run" type of candidates want the job or would take it.

So, as a result, Providence has to get the best person it can, who actually wants the job. For example, Oliver Purnell or Tom Crean wouldn't have taken that job.

The MAAC's 7th best RPI team had a better RPI this season than the MVC's 7th best RPI team.

I'm sorry, but that's funny T. Cleaner dirt! Hey at least we can knock Cooley off the list, Jeter is gone too..................Whew! Time for my dark horse candidate to come to light! Ben Wierzba! BRING ON BEN! I would love to see a fellow Farmington Farmer take the reins! Sorry guys just trying to liven up the crowd here! ;)
