Post-season Tournaments- CBI & Basketball Classic

If BU does not win the MVC Tournament, what are thoughts on other post-season possibilities? Are the CBI and CIT still in business? If so, does BU sign on? With a young team I'd think the answer is yes, but curious what others think. Obviously, with 17 wins as an MVC team, BU can play on if it wants to.

Those tourneys are pay to play and I get the impression that’s just not an option for BU. Coach can correct me if I’m wrong.

The 2022 CBI is scheduled to be played March 19-23 at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Florida. This is the same single-site venue it was played at last year because of Covid. ESPN will broadcast the semifinals and finals. It will be a 16-team bracketed tournament.

The CIT (CollegeInsider Tournament) is uncertain for 2022. They cancelled the tournament in 2020 and 2021. They have not made any announcement regarding 2022.

I don't think the money would be the limiting issue (≈$50,000 to host a CBI game, ≈$30,000 to host a CIT game; much less to play a road game).
It would be the decision of the coaches and AD, and maybe with the players' input. We don't really have any way of knowing what our coaches, team, or AD would decide. The only precedent with the current administration and staff was the 2017-18 season, the only season the team finished with a winning record (20-13 and 9-9 in the MVC) and did not win the MVC Tournament. There were reports that the CBI and CIT invited Bradley, but BU declined at that time. However, Bradley was planning a summer tour to London and Amsterdam in July of that year, and they wanted to focus on preparing for the 10 extra practices and the tour. Plus, the money was better used to fund that foreign tour, and for the experience and rewards that it gave the team.

So, just a guess, but I think if the opportunity presented itself this year, they might consider it.

The CIT has changed and will be The Basketball Classic.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Basketball_Classic

"The tournament consists of three rounds, single elimination, games are held on campuses of participating schools. All gate receipts will be collected by The Basketball Classic. Schools can host games in the tournament without the responsibility of an additional financial commitment."

Thanks for finding that MacabreMob. That's the first I've heard of it.
Here is their website, and it doesn't reveal much-

The Wikipedia link does report that ESPN+ is the streaming site for the games.

These are obviously difficult, since the most deserving teams are not necessarily the teams that get bids, and some teams that get bids will decline.
The CBI is more about who is willing to put up the money, and who knows what criteria the Basketball Classic will end up using.

Will there be any MVC teams willing to play?
Possibilities- Drake (NET 83- NIT longshot), Missouri State (NET 6- slightly more likely to get an NIT bid, but not assured)
Unlikely, but not impossible- Bradley (NET 97)?, SIU (NET 134)?

I would like to see Bradley in some kind of season ending tournament. It would give them that much more experience to get them ready for next year

I agree, it’d be a chance to play guys like Zek and Ekono more in games to see what we have with them. Maybe Linke and Hannah as well. Let Terry rest that ankle that never seemed quite the same at the end. Let Hickman handle the point a little. Plus with no baseball I just want something to watch!

I agree with all of this, except you know if we play in one of these tourneys coach will play to win. Roberts will start and play 30+ minutes because they can’t turn off their competitive natures. It’s part of why they are good.

I’d love to get some major Ekono and Montgomery minutes tho. Need something to think about over this summer, doesn’t look like there will be much baseball to keep me occupied. Manfred is already easily my least favorite commissioner ever.

I find this guys pick of teams rather funny. He has several teams in these tournaments that wouldn't even finish in the top 6 of the MVC and yet I don't see BU, Drake, or MSU anywhere on his list. Just find it very interesting.

I agree, though I don't know all the criteria he used to make his selections. As I said above, it's really hard, since these types of tournaments like the CBI don't have any set rules for who they invite. Probably, the CBI has already been in touch with 2 or 3 MVC teams, including Bradley.

One of the teams he projected for the CBI, VMI (16-15, 9-9, and tied for 5th in the SoCon, NET 163), just announced that they had accepted a bid to the CBI-

BU will not be playing in any post season tournaments.

Kind of disappointing to hear. But if they use this time to get better and work on recruiting a couple key additions for next season, all the better.
I guess we already know that BU should take care of bizness on their home court, so they have nothing to prove.

I'd like to see them with the CIT championship - for the loyal fans more than anything.

Maybe I'm misremembering, but don't these tournaments require either a buy in or some financial guarantee. Might be more of a money thing.

Yes, these tournaments are in it to make money. But that isn't the main reason Bradley opted not to play.

Is it an NCAA/NIT or bust type mentality of the program? I don’t know what else it would be if it’s not money. Experience isn’t a bad thing.

I don't know that answer in Bradley's case, but there must be a lot of other reasons. Many teams have turned down the CBI, CIT, Vegas Tournament, and now the Basketball Classic.
They do not carry a lot of prestige.
