Players leaving ISU

As previously suspected - Matt Hein is leaving - he likely has his degree and will transfer & be eligible immediately elsewhere

also - Darius Beane is leaving SIU - cousin Jimmy Beane was already leaving, reportedly he had serious grades & academic issues

I'll bet if we did the research - the rosters of the ten MVC teams have set an all time turnover record....
Just about every team loses more than half their players from 2018-19....probably closer to 2/3

I just counted each team's roster and who is returning...

and by my count -- as of right now (and even more could still leave- there's already talk of it...) ...........
only 45 scholarship players who played in 2018-19 are set to return in 2019-2020..
with UNI apparently returning the most...(I did not count returning walk-ons or players returning who did NOT play in 2018-19)

That's 45 players - and each team has 13 scholarship players - so 45 of 130 is 34.6% -
so the turnover in the MVC this upcoming season is roughly 65.4% of players who played in 2018-19 are gone...
Time will tell if all that turnover will result in improvement or several teams reloading & rebuilding...

Hein's departure means the only players returning who played on this past year's team will be senior shooting guard Zach Copeland (9.3 ppg), former walkon Matt Chastain (3.5 ppg), and seldom used sophomore backup forward Rey Idowu (2.9 ppg). Taylor Bruninga is also due to return. He played his freshman season, but sat out last year with injuries.

These are the players who ran out of eligibility- Phil Fayne, Milik Yarbrough, Keyshawn Evans, and William Tinsley.
And these players left with eligibility remaining- Isaac Gassman, Matt Hein, and Josh Jefferson.
For the team that had the least depth last year, they will rival SIU as the MVC team that returns the least production in 2019-20. Muller will be relying on a lot of new and unproven players-
6'2" junior walkon transfer from UI-Springfield Lijah Donnelly
6'9" redshirt freshman forward who sat out last year due to academics Abdou Ndaiye
6'8" sophomore forward transfer from San Jose State Keith Fisher III
6'6" senior guard transfer from San Jose State Jaycee Hillsman
6'4" sophomore guard transfer from Eastern Kentucky Dedric Boyd
6'2" incoming freshman guard recruit D.J. Horne from Trinity Christian HS in Fayetteville, NC- Muller's only 2019 scholarship recruit
6'4" incoming walkon freshman guard Malcolm Miller from Shelbyville, IL High School
and..
6'8" sophomore forward Taylor Bruninga returning from an injury redshirt year

Assuming Matt Chastain remains on scholarship for 2019-20 (he was a walkon his first year 2017-18, then received a scholarship this past year 2018-19), Dan Muller currently has 4 open scholarships for 2019, more than any other team in the MVC.

ISU will look like a completely new team this season. They have 11 new names on their active roster-

Their only returning players will be Zach Copeland, Rey Idowu, Matt Chastain, and Taylor Bruninga. Only Copeland was a regular starter, and Bruninga missed the entire season last year with his recurrent stress fracture problems in his foot.

Their basketball twitter posts occasional updates on their players-

They have a lot of potential talent among their transfers, but we won't know how it translates until they play a few games.
They start with 3 home games (Belmont, Little Rock, UCF) then head to St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands for the Paradise Jam. Their first game there is against a loaded Cincinnati team. Here is their schedule, and I wouldn't be surprised if they are 6-6 in their non-conference schedule.

Update on former ISU player Milik Yarbrough. After failing to get ISU to the NCAA Tournament, Yarbrough was not drafted in the NBA Draft, despite some who claimed he was definitely NBA material. Then he did not get invited to the NBA Summer League, and was not offered a contract to try out for any NBA team in preseason camps. So he finally got a deal with a relatively low-level pro team in Portugal, U.D. Oliveirense, but back on October 2, after just 2 preseason games, he was dismissed from the team and sent packing.

His team, Oliveirense, finished their preseason without him, and are scheduled to begin their regular season Saturday, Oct. 19.
So far, Yarbrough has not signed with any other pro team.
