Philip Gilbert

I coached against his team in a holiday tournament in Greenview last week. He is now the Head Coach and AD at Madison High School. A 1A school near his hometown of ESL. They smoked us. Real talented team but they play a very tough schedule. We chatted after the game. I said are you the Philip Gilbert from Bradley that’s Top 10 all-time in scoring and scored 1,600 points? He said 1,689 actually. I said close enough. We laughed. Talked about Walt passing him on the all-time scoring list and then chatted about our teams. He’s still in great shape and is a great guy. Very passionate coach. With his Madison team’s win over us they earned a berth in the Championship. Knocking us into the 3rd place game.

The next day we won the 3rd place game, we chatted and wished him luck in the championship. I thought they would run away with it as the team we beat in the 3rd place game only lost by 1 against the other finalist. Surprisingly they went down by 5 at the half. He must have given them a very “inspirational” halftime talk because they came out and won by 25, winning the championship. Pretty cool to catch up with one of the all-time great Braves.

PG was and still is a classy person and coach. He brought his team to a BU game a few years ago and they sat right in front of us. Very polite team members. My wife and I were very impressed. She sent a letter to the school superintendent complementing Gilbert and his team.

Me and JJ Taui have become gym friends. He has been in the area for 3 months on Paternity leave. Great guy, very talkative. Living in LA, working for the FBI. I think he went back yesterday, 1/5.

I saw JJ Tauai at the Missouri State game. He is in great shape. He worked as a Springfield, Missouri police officer for a number of years, then was accepted into the FBI and assigned to the west coast. His former teammates Marcellus Sommerville and Danny Adams were also at the game.
His Facebook page has pictures of his family- two older daughters, and his wife and new son. - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=31402643

I didn't see him last Wednesday at the Indiana State game, but BU great Phillip Gilbert was at the game with his entire team that he coaches from Madison
