second semester starts today at ND

Zach Auguste 6'10 Center(and only starter over 6'5) 14.3ppg 6.4 rb was declared ineligible for the #12 ranked 15-2 Irish ...just as the ACC schedule really kicks in(beat N Carolina at NC the other day)

ND lost their best player at mid season last year too(Grant).

I remember when mid-year bad news was an annual occurrence at Bradley-back in the high flying days of the 1960s BU Basketball

The Braves seemed to lose players at mid-year almost ever single season back in the day-killing the chance at a number of Missouri Valley crowns and NCAA bids...but that's all very ancient history now

Okafor vs Geben = Club vs Baby Seal

Okafor vs Geben = Club vs Baby Seal

Tough luck for UND- this injury really hurts them. Notre Dame is 15-2 and ranked #12 in both polls-

When it was first reported, it was suggested Auguste would just sit out one game, but later, reports were that the suspension was for the rest of the season-

post from an ND BB site:

when someone speculated how Auguste's replacement at center(frosh Martinas Geben) would do against Duke's frosh center sensation Jahlil Okafor....this response was posted:

Mack Herndon did play 1/2 yr one season

Mack Herndon did play 1/2 yr one season

I believe Herndon played in more than one 1/2 of a season.

Mack Herndon only played 1/2 yr of varsity at BU in the 1959/60 season

Herndon was only able to get into BU for the 2nd semester of the previous year(1958/59) and played frosh BB for a 1/2 yr that season- and again played another 1/2 yr of frosh ball in 59/60 before 'graduating' to the varsity

Herndon jointed the varsity team at the same time that BJ Mason left the squad.
Mason played the first semester with the varsity, but ran out of eligibility prior to the 2nd semester.

BU won the NIT that season w Herndon one of the major stars in the tourney

Herndon then played the full 1960/61 varsity season before dropping out of school and missing the 1961/62 season....then (to his credit) returning in 62/63 to be the leading scorer for the Braves

An aside: I had actually typed a very long response with all the things that happened to BU in the 1960s-but somehow was logged out when I tried to submit(luckily all the posters were spared that-and I won't waste my time typing it again

PS Back to the original post: Notre Dame won last night at Georgia Tech w/o center Auguste using a 6'5 player at center= Frosh Bonzie Colson(with no one over 6'5 on the floor most of the night)

Mack was a stud. In one of those NIT games, he took a hard elbow which broke his nose. Adrenalin kicked in and he went on a scoring/ rebounding tear the rest of the tournament. Someone ... Ozzie I think ... suggested he punch himself in the nose before the tipoff of every game. Da good ole days!

1961-62 could have been a monster yr for BU

Mack Herdon soph, Tim Robinson soph and Chet Walker Jr made up the front court for Bradley in 1960/61

The next season Bradley brought up Joe Strawder and Lavern Tart from the frosh team

That would have been a monster team-as it was, they tied for the conference championship with Cincinnati (who won the National Championship that season)

But the Braves did all this without either Herndon or Robinson-both of whom were gone(instead of juniors at BU)

And Strawder got suspended from school late in the season....the only game that BU played against Cincinnati with Strawder in the lineup, they won....they lost twice after Joe was suspended

And I didn't even mention that Chico Vaughn (the leading all time scorer in Illinois HS history) coulda/shoulda been a senior guard on that squad....but Chico was 'stolen' off the Bradley campus a day before he was set to enroll at Bradley....by Dayton....who lost him to Southern Illinois before they could enroll him either!! )Chico ended up being the all time leading scorer in SIU history before a great career in the NBA and ABA

this back in the Wild West days of recruiting

That '61/62 squad could easily have been Bradley's finest....if only

Tim Robinson was not a Parade AA

Tim Robinson was not a Parade AA

I believe Robinson was a Parade All American.

Tim Robinson was not a Parade AA (I think we have had this discussion here before)

In Robinson's senior yr of HS (1958-59), a junior by the name of Lawerence Nixon 6'6 from Galesburg did make Parade AA(3rd team) and repeated again the next yr as a senior(along with George Wilson of Chicago Marshall-who went to Cincinnati....the only 2 players from Illinois on the team-but no Robinson)

Chet Walker also missed being a Parade AA one year before, although his Michigan arch-rival Dave DeBusshere was a Parade AA as well as Jerry Lucas

Willie Betts was Bradley's first Parade AA in 1964(5th team)-on the 1st team that year was Wes Unseld and Lew Alcindor(who I believe was a soph that yr) Power Memorial NYC

LC Bowen was the second Bradley Parade AA in 1965(2nd team)-on the first team that season were Lew Alcindor of Power Memorial NYC(again) and Pete Maravich (Raleigh,NC)....on the 2nd team with Bowen were Butch Beard (Louisville) and Lucius Allen(UCLA)...Dave Golden of Pekin was on the 3rd team & signed w Duke

Late EDIT: the Parade HS Basketball All American team started w the 1956 season
the Parade Football AA team started in 1963
