OT: Caterpillar threatening to leave Illinois!

not at all -- it means that behind closed doors with the gov...he got what he wanted -- promises of tax breaks and other incentives.....
 
I would bet that Caterpillar will benefit from this one way or another.

It seems Governor Quinn was in a big hurry to meet with Oberhelman in a highly publicized meeting, and now suddenly everything is comfy between them and Oberhelman has nothing but nicey-nice things to say about Quinn. No doubt Quinn made some promises to the Cat CEO to get him on his side.

You betcha there was some real poilticing happening behind closed doors.

Governor: I need you on my side what is it going to take
CAT: Tax breaks and other concessions
Governor: We can help you out but I'll need some re-election help and I have a nephew looking for a job.
CAT: I'd have to believe we can help.

CAT (later on that day to the CFO): Put some of that money we are going to be saving now into our election fund for the Governor and spread it around a bit. Boy I love having all this discretionary money to buy these entitlements. Who said welfare had to be only for the poor.

Oh and those raises for the workers. Let's spin this that we are staying here and cannot afford to give them one or we will be forced to leave.

Uh, are you aware that this is how democracy works? Its not by land mass, just because on a map a small portion of the state voted for the person you do not like doesn't mean that it was unfair. An extremely high majority of the people in Illinois live in the Chicago metropolitan area. 9,785,747 out of 12,830,632, or 76.2%

People vote, not acres.

Exactly! Apparently some people are not aware of that or don't mind it as long as it helps their side. Illinois needs to have a system like the electoral college so Illinois voters and not just Chicago voters can decide elections.
 
Alert -- this is an older thread...

but yet again a major corporation in Illinois is talking of possibly leaving the state...and it could affect Peoria...

ADM - Archer, Daniels, Midland Co. has announced they will look into moving their corporate headquarters out of Decatur...Chicago is one of the potential destinations but other destinations are out of state..
They do not plan to close their soybean processing plant in Decatur - this decision will only involve their corporate headquarters...

..per the WSJ, other places rumored but not known with certainty that could be under consideration - Indianapolis and cities in Texas

FWIW - this is a somewhat political post....

Well, one more major Illinois corporation has now left the state and terminated every employee they had in Illinois....

And this one will be a familiar name to Bradley fans...

It is Star Trucking in Morton, IL, and I just spoke with one of the last people who were employed there and got terminated recently...

If you recall, Governor Quinn decided to tax the heck out of the trucking industry in an effort to get more money into the state's coffers...
The owner of Star even told the governor that if they did this, he'd be forced to move his business out of Illinois to remain competitive and at that time Gov. Quinn said tuff luck!

So, rather quietly and gradually, Star registered all their trucks in another state, and when all that got done, they sold their operations and moved to Arizona...
They still own the facility in Morton off the interstate, but they have no vehicles there and do no business out of that building.

In the end - the new tax laws to get more money for the state have probably cost them more than they figured they'd gain, plus sure doesn't help employment with loss of good jobs.

Can you expand on that? What tax was implemented targeting the trucking industry?

Aren't they going to hurry back to Illinois now that Rauner is elected?
 
Bruce Rauner will have no power to legislate, and both state house and senate are heavily democratic and under the control of Mike Madigan. Unfortunately, Rauner cannot override laws with his pen and his phone like Obama.

Recent hikes in corporate taxes have caused a lot of businesses and people to flee Illinois

No doubt taxes are high here, but much lower than Wisconsin (whose governor Rauner seems to want to emulate).

I'm not sure where you are getting your info, maybe from the Pat Quinn campaign. But Illinois has one of the top corporate income taxes in the country and much higher than in Wisconsin.
