Oregon to hire Dana Altman

I agree as well......kinda like people jumping on Wilkins for changing his mind 2 years later when it comes to a life-changing decision.

IMO the 2 are different. I would imagine the financial situation for Altman has improved by taking another job. If all the BCS schools were pursuing JW I could understand his changing his mind. But also IMO if the BCS schools aren't chasing him, Bradley is his best bet.

I'm just saying I would hate be blamed or ridiculed for making a decision, have that decision fall through due to circumstances beyond my control, and then two years later change my original decision due to new choices that may be available now.

The decision hasn't falled through. As far as I know there is still a scholarship available at the school he committed to. I agree, the NCAA is the cause of this, but I'm sure he had to know there were other schools that may have been available when he committed to the Braves. It wasn't Bradley's fault.

I realize it wasn't Bradley's fault, but the decision he made two years ago DID fall through, otherwise he would have been here at that point. Things can change in two years. Again, I hope nobody holds me to a decision I made two years ago when the result of that decision was "postponed" due to things that were out of my control. I would certainly hope to be given the chance to re-evaluate that decision two years later when other options were included that may not have been there before.

It was a one year ago, not 2! Where do you get 2? It feels like 2.;-) I do not have a problem with him in reality unless he ends up at ISU red. Then I'd have to question his IQ.

John Wilkins originally verballed to Bradley almost exactly 20 months ago. Maybe not exactly 2 years, but closer to 2 years than it is to 1 year.

I believe I got the information that he verballed from this very website.

It was a one year ago, not 2! ...

John Wilkins came to the US in June of 2008 and played AAU ball in July 2008...
he received plenty of offers but verballed to Bradley in mid-August of 2008..and tried to enroll, being thwarted by NCAA at every turn...
By January of 2009, it was clear NCAA was not going to clear him for initial eligibility -- claiming deficiencies in transcrptis that never appear to be problems
for all the other obscure European and African kids who end up at places like Indiana or UConn! -- and so John enrolled in junior college.

But I have it on pretty good authority, that shortly after he arrived in the US in June of 2008, he made a verbal pledge to come to BU but of course couldn't sign anything....
He still went through the process of playing AAU and fielding offers, but all along he knew where he wanted to be and never really wavered.

So the statement that he pledged to BU two years ago is pretty close to being precise......he made the public verbal more than 20 months ago.

(many of the early threads we had on John Wilkins have been removed, but John had verbally said he was interested in coming to BU before he was here for the Tailgate in Sept. 2008 )

I should have typed "20 months" instead of "2 years".

Anyways.....when in doubt, consult the scholarship grid......

Version 4.0 (added John Wilkins)

sg -- hope you didn't take my response as arguing against you -- as I was in fact standing with you in saying it was a "pretty precise statement!!"

Well 2 years and all we got was?????

My bad, it is definitely a relationship that appears to be dysfunctional. I've moved on from JW as a bunch of smarter guys then me did a lot earlier. We do have a special program and I see no reason to grovel to anyone.

hey - so looks like we miss on JW - but we also missed on others -- Buycks, Brust, Shumpert, etc...
can't agonize over every gal you never got a date with...

Don't believe all those names you mentioned agreed to go on a date like JW did.

JW who?

I won't be disappointed about BU missing on JW until the kid succeeds somewhere else and lives up to all the hype he has received.

I was more disappointed about BU losing Granger, Tucker, Tisby, Stemler ...players who were here, but then left and had success at other schools.

seriously?
Dwight Buycks not only committed to Bradley, he was planning to sign a Letter of Intent (something JW was never even able to do)..
However, Buycks did not get a satisfactory test score and had to go to juco,
and both Brust & Shumpert had dates with BU but married someone else...and in Brust's case have now broken it off..

Don't remember ever reading about Brust or Shumpert committing to Bradley and that's what I figure is a "date."

Doug McDermott signed an agreement to play basketball for UNI and now he'll be playing for another team in the same conference. I don't believe Wilkins ever signed anything and that was almost two years ago!

Dana seems to have landed another "recruit"...

seems one of the better players in CUSA...a sophomore guard at SMU named Paul McCoy...

McCoy is a Portland native....had a tremendous freshman season at SMU in 2008-2009 averaging 13.4 ppg & 4 rebs, 3 asst...
then he injured his knee during his sophomore campaign and ended up hobbled and missing a dozen games...

Now word is he's gonna leave SMU and transfer back to Oregon and play at UO for Dana!!

Three other big time names might be back on the free market...
David and Travis Wear at North Carolina (both 5-STAR, Class of 2009) are reportedly unhappy (playing time) and going to leave and transfer -- both were 5-Star kids...
The "closer to home" argument makes them possible great gets for a hurting UCLA team...
and 5-Star Brad Beal who had committed to Florida is said to be reconsidering and possibly reopening recruitment --

interesting......
and if interested...here's more transfers......
Two at Michigan State?? - http://www.mlive.com/spartans/index.ssf/2010/05/spartans_chris_allen_to_transf.html
This article says that since the guy has got his degree, he should be eligible right away but I am not so sure..

Gonzaga's Grant Gibbs..originally from Iowa may be looking to transfer closer...the guys at Creighton & Iowa think they have him wrapped up..
