Northern Illinois down 18-4 at the half!!!

I just posted this in the "Ugly game of the night" thread. But this game deserves a thread of it's own.

In what is possibly the worst half of college basketball ever played, NIU is down 18-4 (!) to Eastern Michigan at the half!!! I know Mark Montgomery is in his second year as coach over there, but that is hideous! It looks like a large tree limb off the Tom Izzo coaching tree just fell off!

This is getting even better now. EMU up 20-4 with 16:28 to go in the game! EMU should be up 40 by now, so they haven't played well either!

NIU went 0 for 17 at three point range in the first half. Hmmm, maybe that's not working and they should try to get inside for some looks!

NIU now a "hot" 1 for 37 (!!!) shooting, for a grand total of 2.5%!

What a shame considering how great their football program is.

EDIT: HEY! NIU now up to 9 points, now down 25-9 with 11:56 left. They just surpassed their first half total!

UNI scored only 5 points in the first 26 minutes of the game and are 0-24 from 3-pt range!!

..now with 12 min left - they still have only 3 FG's (3-42) a FG accuracy of about 8%
Oddly - in a game this ugly you'd expect way more turnovers, fouls and 2nd chance points - but that's not the case..
Abdel Nader made the very first shot he took, then proceeded to miss the next ten, but then so did everyone else..

Agreed with everything, but don't give NIU this much credit. NIU is no UNI! ;)

Having 33 points at that point in the game, unless you're playing a Top 25 team is crazy...13 points simply unbelievable!

NIU just barely avoids breaking the record for the lowest point total of 21 points set by Princeton against Monmouth in 2005 in a 41-21 loss. To clarify, this was the lowest combined total and total for one team since the three point shot and shot clock were established. NIU did however set the record today for the fewest points in one half with 4. EMU wins 42-25. A good chunk of NIU's 25 points were scored in "garbage" time, with under 5 minutes to go.

Hard to believe there were two games from 1970 onward where the final scores were less than some baseball games!

The record low is actually 20 set by the Billikens of Saint Louis in 07 I think. Was hoping that NIU could take that record.

Yeah, I just saw this on an ESPN article. I think I vaguely remember that score, and that was during the first year Rick Majerus was coaching that team. The game in question was a 49-20 loss to George Washington on January 11, 2008. And that was during the first year Rick Majerus was coaching that team. I guess it can happen to the best of them, but it looks like Mark Montgomery is still struggling big time at NIU. He was 5-26 last year, but already is 4-14 this year, so they may have a couple of more wins than last year and show a little improvement. ;)

Note one of their four wins came against a non-Division I school in Judson College. And though they have been scoring more points of late (note all the sub 50 point games earlier in the season), the two games surrounding their recent win over the same Central Michigan team we beat earlier in the year are REALLY ugly to say the least! Today notwithstanding, NIU actually accomplished their two MAC wins on the road. This bodes well for NIU as the majority of their remaining games are at home, at least for 3 or 4 more wins. :)

In a battle of a couple teams in the basement of the MAC...
NIU had yet another horrid offensive game last night losing 57-41 to Bowling Green -
another team that struggles offensively & shoots very poorly, who had won only 3 of their prior 12 games - and had previously not won at all on the road..
Only two NIU players made more than a single basket, and their starters combined for 10-34, and they hit 27% overall.
NIU's home attendance last night was just 708, the smallest home crowd in over a year and one of the 2 smallest home crowds of Mark Montgomery's teniure there..
The fans unfortunately are bailing by the busloads....

as offensively challenged as some of Molinari's teams were - there are a whole lot of NIU fans who want to can Montgomery now,
and maybe go after Molinari now & try to entice him away from his "minimal-wage job" at WIU!

Actually until that game NIU was 3-5 and positioned for a 5 seed and bye in the MAC Tournament (The top 5 get byes w/ Toledo ineligible). They have one of the youngest teams in the country and their shooting has just been wildly inconsistent, with the famous 1-for-30 something night followed up by a shocking win over Kent State.

Patton ran the program into the ground and if it weren't for future NBA player Xavier Silas his records would have been even worse than this. The Montgomery hire looks good on paper and I think most fair minded fans know you need to give him a couple more years. AD Compher is far more concerned about football anyway, and won't keep Montgomery on a short leash.

....you make it sound like they're doing well..........
but that's like ISU saying they are only a couple games out of 2nd when they would actually have to vault past 7 teams to get there and are really in 9th place..

Because - NIU's current 3-6 is just a game better than the only team with a worse record in the entire conference, and would BE last place if they were in the other division...
BUT - the bottom of the MAC is so bad that NIU has been able to rack a grand total of just 3 wins since the first week in December - by beating three teams that equally horrid as they are.

They're certainly not doing well, but they weren't in the "basement." Obviously, the MAC (especially the MAC West) is bad so they're given opportunities to play themselves into the middle of the pack, as bad as they are.

You can spin it either way. They're a game ahead of the last place teams. But they're also 3rd in their division and in position for the 6 or 7 seed because 2 of the teams they're tied with they beat.
