The juco National Championships are being played right now.

In Division I junior college, here are the winners so far in the Sweet Sixteen:

College of Southern Idaho beat Vincennes 80-69
Lon Morris beat SW Tennessee 85-71 ****By the way...here's an interesting fact about SW Tenn.
They are the Saluqis...pronounced sal-u-kees, just like SIU...
and their logo is the exact same kind of dog that SIU uses:

Three Rivers CC beat Bevill State 66-65


And Chipola just beat Georgia Perimeter 75-64, with Jamarcus Ellis having a monster game 24 points, 13 rebounds, 6 assists.
Georgia Perimeter was led by three guys whose names would make the All-Name Team,
Jocolby Davis 19 pts, Akeem Sween 12 pts, Fred Brathwaite 10 pts.


BUT the game most Bradley fans want to know about is being played now.
Rashad Austin and his Northeastern Junior College (31-1) are presently playing Itawamba Community College (Missisippi).
That result/final should be available in the next half hour.


then the late games include:
Highland Comm. College (IL) vs. Coffeyville
Seminole State vs. Indian Hills (IA)
Aiken Tech vs. Midland

Then 2nd round play (in the Elite Eight) will match
Vincennes vs. SW Tennessee (consolation/lower bracket)

The Sweet Sixteen for D-II junior colege starts tomorrow.
 
David Thirdkill played at St. Louis Soldan High School and graduated in 1978. He spent 1 season at College of Southern Idaho (1978-1979) and lead them to a 25-5 record and a berth in the national junior college tournament.
He then transferred to Bradley as a sophomore and spent 3 seasons at Bradley (1979-1980, 1980-1981, and 1981-1982).

Sorry, but I have all the media guides from those years, and none of them mention Three Rivers College. I can't find any evidence that Thirdkill ever attended Three Rivers, and I don't know when it could have been, since his 4 years of college eligibility are all accounted for (1 at CSI and 3 at Bradley).

Bummer for Rashad, but at least he isn't going to get spotted by more scouts in the tourney.
Maybe he decides now for BU!
 
Actually, the tournament is double elimination until the 3rd round,
so Northeastern Junior College continues to play in the lower bracket,
facing Highland at noon Thursday,
shooting for 9th place among the 16 teams there in Hutchinson, KS.
 
In the late game last night between Northeastern Junior College of Sterling, CO and Itawamba (MS),
Rahsad's NJC Plainsmen lost 72-62 and fall into the lower bracket.

Rashad played 38 minutes, was 4-7, and 3-4 from the line for 11 points,
and he also snagged 10 rebounds (to lead the team).

All of the Plainsmen strarters were in foul trouble most of the game, with their starting PG fouling out in 31 minutes, and 3 other starters had 4 fouls each, with Rashad the only starter who did better in the foul count, he had 3.
The game was really sloppy with a total of 45 turnovers (21 for Itawamba, 24 for NJC), and the teams spent an eternity shooting FTs, with Itawamba nailing 25-37, and NJC only 15-32, both teams had 26 total fouls.

NJC outrebounded Itawamba 46-41, outshot them 56% to 40%, and had 10 steals to 6.
But it is obvious this game was won by the guys with whistles, and by the team that hit a few more of their free throws.

In the very late game, Coffeyville beat Highland 63-61, with Daniel Payne, a previously untouted, 6-7 PF getting 26 pts and 11 rebs on 11-14 from the field, 3-4 from long range.
Payne will probably be getting some recruiting calls very soon.

Well good to see that the MVC refs found some work after the conference season. :D
 
In the 2nd round,
Northeastern Junior College plays today at noon,
but Chipola played again late last night, and blew out Three Rivers 78-59, with Jamarcus Ellis
scoring 18 and 6 rebs, 5 asst.
DeAandre Thomas who also committed to IU had 14/9.

Northeastern JC plays at noon.


In the Division II juco tournament, the team that knocked off ICC, Lewis & Clark, won handily last night over Community College of Rhode Island, 74-61.
They play again tonight at 8:30PM
 
I have some premium recruiting information on Rashad Austin.

Here is just a little, and the rest I'll save for later, hoping he commits to Bradley....many of you will be hearing more...

In the first round game at the NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas, Northeastern Junior College lost to Itawamba, 72-62.

Van Coleman (of Hoopmasters) says Rashad Austin was one of NJC's only bright spots.
The teams both struggled from the field, and I said elsewhere, lots of fouls, turnovers, and missed chances.

But Rashad played fine defense, and he had 11 pts, 7 rebs.
As I said...I will put together more...
 
Northeastern Junior College just complated its game today and they WON.

NJC 75 - Highland (IL) 74 with NJC coming back from a 5-point halftime deficit.
NJC point guard Omar Leary had 21 pts, and 7 assists.

Rashad Austin 9-16, 24 points, to lead all scorers.

DePaul recruit Matija Poscic has really struggled, getting zero points on Monday and only 5 points in this game.
I think the full scholarship they gave to him last summer might just be a poor choice as it turns out.
He is on a very good team, but he just doesn't seem to have any offensive skills.
Can any of the fine DePaul guys who frequent our board comment?


Northeastern Junior College plays their next game at 1PM Friday.
 
I have made my opinion known, that I like the kid, and would love to see him play at BU,
but the coaching staff has seen many, many more players, and have a keen eye to evaluate them,
and I trust they'll make the best choice.

DeAndre thomas just committed to Indiana and will play alongside his teammate from Chipola nd from Chicago Westinghouse, Jamarcus Ellis.

But Indiana head coach Kelvin Sampson confirms this and a premium Indiana/Rivals article says:
"...Chipola junior college standout DeAndre Thomas has committed to IU. If Thomas, a 6-8, 270-pound big man who is the current teammate of Indiana signee Jamarcus Ellis, is indeed headed for Bloomington he'd put the Hoosiers over the limit of 13 scholarships."

"But Sampson says there are plenty of ways to go over the maximum scholarship mark ?????? many of which don't include a transfer or an early departure."

The article doesn't say exactly how you do this, but it sounds all the more like either Sampson has found a way to get around the rules, or someone presently on scholarship really is going to be gone.
Could it mean the injury to Lance Stemler is career threatening?
Or maybe DJ White is leaving for the NBA.

as a followup, in Coffeyville's next game that finished late last night, Daniel Payne had 17 points, 13 rebounds and Coffeyville beat the team that knocked off Northeastern Junior College, Itawamba, 69-47.

NJC plays today at 1PM
 
Northeastern Junior College's game is just finished, and
NJC whalloped Indiana Hills CC (Iowa) 91-67.

Rashad was hampered by foul trouble but played solid
with 9 points, 4 rebs in just 12 minutes.
The blowout allowed a lot of the starters to rest, although Omar Leary had 28 points.

Robert Eppinger plays for Indian Hills, and I am sure a lot of readers will recall Eppinger

Now, Northeastern Junior College will play for 7-8th place in their final game Saturday, March 24, at noon.
 
In one of the late games at the NJCAA National Tournament,
Chipola beat College of southern Idaho, 96-90, and listen to this stat line:

Jamarcus Ellis: 9-19, 1-1 from 3-pt, 11-14 on FT, 32 points, 15 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal.

The only games remainsing are:

Chipola vs. Midland for the Championship
Sollege of southern Idaho vs. Coffeyville for 3rd-4th Place
Lon Morris vs. Seminole State for 4th-5th Place
SW Tennessee vs. Northeastern Junior College for 7th-8th Place
 
Rashad Austin's season is now over...

His Northeastern Junior College Plainsmen WON their final game today, over the Southwest Tennessee Saluqis,
94-80.

Rashad had anohter fine game, with 16 points on 7-14 from the floor and a team leading 6 rebounds.
They are officially declared the 7th place team with this win, and end the season at 34-2.
