It was a great game to watch; quite a few lead changes, great play on both sides, and a couple unusual foul calls at the end of regulation, both on three point attempts. Chattanooga made a couple more clutch shots late in the game to come back and tie, then to pull ahead and win in overtime.
The stands at Hinkle Fieldhouse appeared mostly empty. The attendance was reported as 2,825. Capacity at Hinkle is 9,100.
That has to be one of the lowest attendance numbers for an NIT Championship game ever.
Attendance for the semifinal double-header on Tuesday was 3,288.
UC Irvine missed too many free throws. Ultimately it cost them the game, combined with that missed shot at the end....

Chattanooga had scored to go ahead by one point with 2.4 seconds left in the overtime.
UC-Irvine ran a play with a long pass into the front court, then a second pass to a player under the basket for a wide open layup. But the UCI player muffed the open layup, and time ran out. Chattanooga did a poor job of defending that final play. A really tough way for UCI to lose the championship.
