Next Year

I was just thinking, with Ruffin, Crouch, and Salley graduating next year, our team is going to be pretty big. In 2008, there will only be 4 players under 6'5", two of whom we aren't even sure will be here (Buycks, West.) That being said, what do you guys envision for recruiting next year? Do we go the Juco route again and get smaller players that will make an immediate impact, since potentially only Cole-Scott and Maniscalco will be under 6'5"? Or do we aim more towards 4 year players who won't impact us right away?

I think its kind of funny how you can transition from a team with a desperate need for height and only 2 impact players over 6'7", to a team that might have too much height with 2 players under 6'5", in only a 2 year span.

Get the best talent you can get...
but preferably guards...guards...and more guards...
Go hard after West and Buycks and hope at least one of them signs.
Bigs are nice to get, but success in the Valley starts with good guard play. Losing Ruffin and Crouch after next year leaves us with a void there...Hopefully Maniscalco, Cole-Scott, and Warren can step up the following year, but we need to keep bringing them in...

lavin.... i actually might agree. i'm not confident that cole-scott can take the point in '08. this would leave that position fairly open unless maniscalco is ready. lavin has been with us for a significant amount of time and i'm sure he knows the plays forward and backward. i guess i wouldn't be surprised if lavin got some quality PT as a senior.

Honestly, I just don't think theres any way Lavin could possibly be more capable at point than TCS. TCS is more athletic, more experienced and will see PT this year. Even if TCS cannot assume full time PG duties SamM and AW would be more likely to run the team. IMO SamM is going to be ready by next year even if TCS is capable, SamM lifted his team up to the level of some great teams and showed he can distribute the ball against even High D1 talent (Evan Turner, D McCamey, et al). Lavin is a good guy, and has a nice jump shot, but don't expect him to ever get the opportunity to run the braves.

I like Lavin, and know his family, but I was just joking. I was replying to the post about we need some players under 6'5". He will not run the point better than TCS or Maniscalco, and that is a Book It.

Maniscalco....think Mullins from SIU with a better shot, MUCH better shot.

Eh, I'm not sure about that comparison. They're completely different players. Mullins is taller, more of a game manager-type. Maniscalco is more of a penetrator/playmaker, with a spot-on, stop-on-a-dime jump shot with range well beyond 3. I'd say think Jimmy Les with a jumper. :)

From what I have heard/seen SamM is a GREAT ball distibrutor as well as a penetrator and shooter. To be honest all first hand accounts of him I have heard say he is an all around player (I have heard comparisons of him and Deron Williams of the Utah Jazz and Illinois, though SamM is smaller), and could contribute right away.

Well, he's a different kind of player than Deron Williams as well. He could contribute right away, but I am not sure on next year's team that there will be any minutes for him. The only way I can foresee him seeing time is if we go 10 deep, and even then I am not sure his minutes would be significant. I think that all 3 of our freshmen should consider redshirting, their value their 5th years would be tremendous.

Jim Les was in the 3 point shootout at the NBA all star game 1 year, and I believe led the league in 3 point shooting 1 year.(I think) Anyway, Jim Les had a jumper.

Jim Les still has a nice shot.
I was at a summer camp observing where Jim demonstrated shooting to the kids at the camp, and he hit about 17 straight from near the arc in rapid succession.
By the end of the demonstration he had hit probably 38 out of 40, with 90% of them being swishes.
It is no coincidence that the Bradley players all shoot well, as they have a top shooting expert and coach!

I think those who saw Jim play know what I am referring to. Yes, he has a jump shot, and it turned out to be pretty decent one. But Sam's is a pure jumper. Jim's was/is more mechanical that is not as natural as Sam's, and took hours and hours of gym time to perfect. On top of that, Versace had to threated Jim with a benching if he wouldn't shoot the ball as senior, so let's say Sam is a Jim Les-type with more of a scorer's mentality and a more fluid jump shot. Fair enough? :)

Fair enough indeed. Unfortunately I have not been able to see Sam play in person yet, but everyone I've spoke to who has had great things to say about him, even going so far to say he's maybe underrated, and that he is a complete player and an ultra competitor. Plus, any comparison to Jim Les, IMO, would be a positive.
